Air India plane crash: Both life insurance policyholders, nominees among dead

Ahmedabad: Insurance companies are facing challenges in settling claims of the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash victims last week as in many cases the policyholders and nominees both have died in the tragedy. There are instances of an entire family perishing or one of the spouses dying in the horrific June 12 crash of the London-bound plane, which claimed the lives of 241 persons on board and 29 on the ground. Immediately after the accident, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRADI) asked insurance companies to verify details of the deceased with their database on issuance of the overseas medical insurance, personal accident and life insurance policies. The advisory also stated no claim was to be denied or delayed due to procedural formalities in the case of confirmed deceased individuals from the passengers' list and persons at buildings affected by the crash. Accordingly, major insurers like the Life Insurance Corporation of India, New India Assurance, HDFC Life, Iffco Tokio General Insurance, Bajaj Allianz GIC and Tata AIG Insurance have set up their help desks at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to expedite the process. The insurers said they are matching the data shared by authorities with their database and are proactively reaching out to the families. Also read: Air India flight from Delhi to Paris cancelled after issues found in pre-flight checks LIC administrative officer Ashish Shukla told PTI that the company has so far received 10 claims at the hospital and its offices. There is one case where the insured individual nominated the spouse and both died in the accident, said the officer from the country's largest insurance company. Manpreet Singh Sabharwal, manager (claims) at Iffco Tokio insurance, also pointed to a case where the director of a company and his wife, who was his nominee, died in the plane crash. The company has group insured its employees with Iffco Tokio, he said. Tata AIG's principal officer, zonal operations, Nischal Buch said they have so far received seven claims, of which one is a case where the deceased had nominated the spouse who, too, killed in the air crash. The task becomes difficult when both the insured individual and the nominee die, like in the case of air accidents, representatives of the insurance firms maintained. Shukla said in normal circumstances, they seek a succession certificate when both the insured individual and the nominee have died. As a special case, the company has now made an exception. Also read: 66 Dreamliner flights cancelled since fatal Air India crash that killed 270 "If both the insured as well as the nominee have died, we look for class one heirs, which is typically blood relatives like children. If there are multiple children, then we take a declaration from the heirs on how the claim is to be settled and an indemnity bond has to be submitted to the company," he said. Buch said his company's legal team is exploring if joint declarations of the heirs can be sought in cases where both the insured and the nominee have died. It is not just the life that is insured. There are cases of personal accident insurance, luggage insurance and even marine cargo insurance. Prakash Khanchandani, administrative officer with The New India Assurance, said the company has so far received seven claims -- five related to personal accident policy and two of the marine cargo on board. It has settled one marine cargo claim of ₹6.50 lakh. In cases of personal accident policy, the nominees are yet to submit their details as they are still in the process of disposing of the bodies, he said. Bajaj Allianz regional manager Nimish Joshi said the company has received four claims related to the crash victims. One is a marine cargo claim of ₹55 lakh which has been settled. The remaining three are travel insurance policies of ₹10 lakh each and those claims have also been settled, he added.

India-US relations: How Trump's missteps have created a deep distrust

What might have been a defining boom of an alliance for the 21st century is, for now, over—its potential a fading echo across a widening void read more The United States and India once appeared poised to weave a partnership of unparalleled strength—a union of democracies capable of reshaping the balance of power in Asia and beyond. Yet, today, with Islamabad in Donald Trump's crypto pocket and Washington equating India, the victim of brutal Islamic terror attacks, with Pakistan, its perpetrator, this relationship is in tatters. Add US tariffs that aim at Indian export surpluses and Trump insisting that he opposes US investment in India, like those from Apple. The damage to India-US relations is real. With the US unhelpful during Operation Sindoor, a deep fog of distrust has engulfed this relationship. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India cannot be a partner of the US if it lacks unwavering American backing in its most pressing security requirements—protecting India from Pakistan terror attacks. In India there is outrage that the US did not stand by India when it mattered most. This absence was not viewed as a mere oversight; it was seen as a betrayal. America's Pakistan tilt underscores a stark reality: without assured support in such pivotal moments, the US-India relationship rests on sand, not stone. Trump's missteps Trump further widened this rift by claiming mediation for peace, casting a shadow over India's long-held policy rejecting foreign mediation. PM Modi has staked much on bolstering India's global standing, including through ties with the West. He will not lose an election for Trump's sake—his domestic mandate trumps any obligation to absorb a US political fallout. Historical baggage and hectoring tones This distrust is not new; it is steeped in historical context. At a recent US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's hectoring tone—ordering India to shun Russian arms—struck a nerve. The admonition was both offensive and historically tone-deaf. It was the US, through the International Security Assistance (ISA) framework, that once denied India arms while arming Pakistan to the teeth with Super Sabres and F-16s, tilting the subcontinental balance against New Delhi during the Cold War. To now lecture India on its defence choices, while ignoring this legacy, smacks of hypocrisy and reinforces the perception that the US views India as a subordinate, not a partner. Economic coercion: Tariffs and the iPhones Economically, the US has opened another front of contention. Its tough tariff stance is seen in India as a deliberate move to cut the country down to size, stifling its ambitions as a global economic player. Trump's insistence that iPhones should not be manufactured in India is perceived as outright economic warfare. India can make a great trade deal with the US and cut tariffs only if US investments make up the balance. Rather than fostering a symbiotic relationship that leverages India's manufacturing potential, the US opts for coercion, jeopardising mutual benefits. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Strategic drift: The Quad and counter-terrorism Strategically, the partnership is unravelling. The Quad—comprising the US, India, Japan, and Australia—once a promising counterweight to authoritarianism, now languishes in a dangerous drift. India will look silly fighting Chinese influence ship to ship with the US when the same country backs Pakistan! Counter-terrorism cooperation, once a bedrock of bilateral ties, is all but dead. Military hesitation and regional vacuums Militarily, while India has pivoted to buying much of the US' weaponry, the new chill will freeze the F35 deal. Seen from New Delhi, only some short-term trade-offs are possible under Trump. This is not an administration India can do strategic business with. It is likely that post the trade deal, Trump may visit India in August 2025; things may look up for a while, but strategically this relationship is unlikely to blossom. The loss is mutual: for the US, a diminished foothold in a pivotal region; India loses a superpower perceived now as one that neither safeguards its security nor nurtures its rise. What might have been a defining boom of an alliance for the 21st century is, for now, over—its potential a fading echo across a widening void. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal Embarks on Official Visit to United Kingdom

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal is on a high-level official visit to the United Kingdom from 18th to 19th June 2025. The visit underscores India's strategic focus on strengthening its economic and trade partnership with the UK, particularly in the backdrop of the announcement by the two Prime Ministers to conclude the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). At a time of evolving global trade dynamics, Shri Goyal's visit aims to accelerate bilateral engagements, harness emerging opportunities, and lay a robust foundation for a forward-looking, resilient, and mutually beneficial economic relationship. During the visit, Goyal will hold a bilateral meeting with the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Mr. Jonathan Reynolds. Both leaders will review the progress made in the ongoing FTA negotiations and chart out a clear, time-bound roadmap for its finalisation and implementation. The Minister will also meet the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Ms. Rachel Reeves, to discuss macroeconomic priorities, financial cooperation, and investment facilitation between the two countries. In addition, the Minister is scheduled to engage with Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Ms. Lisa Nandy to explore avenues of collaboration in creative industries and innovation-driven sectors. Goyal will participate in multiple high-impact sessions at the prestigious India Global Forum (IGF), including the Mainstage Plenary, the Future Frontiers Forum, and a roundtable titled 'From Agreement to Action: UK-India FTA'. These engagements will bring together global business leaders, investors, and policy experts to deliberate on the strategic contours of the India-UK economic corridor and the transformative impact of the proposed FTA.
