The San Francisco 49ers brought in free agent veteran quarterback Mac Jones this offseason to back up Brock Purdy.

Purdy recently signed a five-year, $265 million deal to stay with the 49ers at least for the near future, but it never hurts to have a capable backup quarterback in the ranks, especially one with Purdy's injury history.
ESPN's Bill Barnwell wrote about each team's biggest candidate to post either a breakout or flop season, and Jones was targeted for San Francisco. Barnwell noted his trajectory being similar to that of former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.
"If there's one player attempting to explicitly go on the Darnold rejuvenation path, it's Jones. Darnold restarted his career by joining the 49ers in 2023, where he spent the season as a backup to Brock Purdy. Darnold threw only 46 passes in a San Francisco uniform, most of which came in a meaningless Week 18 game against the Rams. Working with coach Kyle Shanahan apparently did enough to rebuild Darnold's confidence before he left for a one-year deal with Minnesota, though. You know what happened next. ... Now, he gets to work with Shanahan, who debated drafting him over Trey Lance at No. 3 in 2021.
"Jones' lone successful season as a pro puts him one ahead of the guy the 49ers did go with, but I'm not sure either of those moves would be considered a success. Four years later, Shanahan got his man to back up Purdy on a two-year, $8.4 million deal."

This could be Jones' big year to make enough of an impression to land a bigger deal next season, and perhaps even find a starting job to continue that Sam Darnold trajectory.

Braves Season Spiraling After Smoke-Filled Oracle Park and Another Spencer Strider Setback

Braves Season Spiraling After Smoke-Filled Oracle Park and Another Spencer Strider Setback originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Smoke Clears at Oracle Park, but Braves Still Burned by Another Loss SAN FRANCISCO — The fire wasn't on the field, but maybe it should have been. Advertisement Just hours before Sunday's series finale between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants, smoke poured from a concession stand inside Oracle Park, prompting an emergency evacuation. No injuries were reported, and the game proceeded as scheduled. But for Atlanta, the real blaze might be the one slowly consuming its season. Former Clemson standout and Braves ace Spencer Strider made his fifth start since returning from the injured list. The comeback trail has been anything but smooth. His fastball velocity is down from pre-surgery levels, and his command hasn't returned. His 5.68 ERA tells part of the story, but advanced metrics suggest a pitcher still searching for rhythm, consistency and trust in a body that's been pushed to its limits. Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider (99) delivers a pitch against the San Francisco Giants during the first inning at Oracle Park.© D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images Still, the blame doesn't fall squarely on Strider. The Braves are spiraling. Atlanta has now lost 13 of its last 16 games and six straight overall. The team sits nine games below .500, a stunning turn for a club once expected to contend deep into October. Blowouts, walk-offs, bullpen meltdowns—Atlanta has suffered every kind of setback during a brutal three-week stretch that has tested even its most experienced veterans. Advertisement The fire at Oracle Park was quickly extinguished. The one smoldering inside the Braves clubhouse is harder to contain. There's no firepower in the lineup. The energy is gone. The swagger has vanished. And fans are asking the obvious questions: Where's the urgency? Where's the response? Atlanta needs a spark. That could mean turning to young talent. It could mean a bold trade. It might require a shake-up in the clubhouse or a hard conversation about leadership. But something has to change. Because right now, the Braves are watching their season go up in smoke. EA Sports to Use Pay-for-Play Incentives for College Teams

EA Sports to Use Pay-for-Play Incentives for College Teams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If you're tired of watching your favorite college team struggle financially in the NIL era, here's your chance to help by simply picking them in College Football 26. Advertisement EA Sports is rewriting the NIL playbook. For the first time ever, schools will be paid based on how often they're used in the game. Gone are the static royalty tiers. Now, fan engagement equals real revenue. Here's how it works: Every time someone plays a game with their favorite FBS team, it counts toward that school's share of the royalty pool. The more your squad is played, the more money your university makes. 'This percentage of games played will become the final allocation percentage for each school that will be applied to the total gross royalties,' one FOIA document reads. Take a hypothetical $5 million royalty pool. If 1% of College Football 26 games are played using Colorado, that's a $50,000 payout to the Buffaloes, just for being popular. Advertisement This pivot marks a huge departure from the 2024 model, which paid schools based on their finishes in the AP Top 25 over the last decade. Under that system, elite Tier 1 schools earned close to $100,000. Tier 4 schools? Just $9,987. Now, even underdog programs like Akron or Coastal Carolina can cash in if fans show up for them in-game. With more than 1.7 billion streams of College Football 25, the potential is massive. And schools aren't the only winners. Players who appeared in last year's edition earned $600. This year? Up to $3,000 per athlete, thanks to dual deals from EA and Pathway Sports. While players don't get royalties based on gameplay, schools do, which could loop back into NIL funds for star players. In College Football 26, fans directly shape the NIL landscape. Every pick matters. Every game counts. And for once, your favorite team's financial future might be in your hands, literally, on the sticks. Dodgers React to Major Clayton Kershaw News on Sunday

Dodgers React to Major Clayton Kershaw News on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium today, and starter Clayton Kershaw was on the mound for the reigning World Series champions. Advertisement Kershaw entered the game positioned 21st on the MLB's all-time strikeout list. He needed just three strikeouts to tie Zack Greinke's total of 2,978 and four to move past him. Kershaw allowed six hits and just one earned run over five innings on Sunday afternoon, striking out seven. The 2014 National League MVP passed Greinke on the all-time strikeout list in the bottom of the third inning, striking out Cardinals left fielder Lars Nootbaar, who came into the afternoon batting .247 this season. Shortly after Kershaw moved past Greinke, the Dodgers took to social media to react, simply reposting the news with no words. Los Angeles Dodgers' repost.@dodgers/X Kershaw, who was drafted seventh overall by the Dodgers in the first round of the 2006 MLB Draft, is now in his 18th major league season. Entering today's start, he had a 0–0 record with a 5.17 ERA, eight strikeouts and a 1.66 WHIP across four appearances in 2025. Advertisement Kershaw is a 10-time All-Star, a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner and holds one NL MVP award won in 2014. He led the league in ERA five times, wins three times and strikeouts three times. He also threw a no-hitter in 2014 and helped the Dodgers win the World Series in 2020. With Sunday's achievement, the Dodgers pitcher now sets his sights on reaching 3,000 strikeouts as he looks ahead to the next milestone in his career.
