Tommy Fleetwood is setting his sights on finally breaking his unwanted PGA Tour record in Memphis. The 34 year old is participating in the St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.
Despite finishing as runner-up at two majors and being part of winning Ryder Cup teams twice, Fleetwood has yet to clinch a title on the PGA Tour. He holds the record as the player who has earned the most money on the tour without securing a victory.
Fleetwood has amassed substantial prize money throughout his career, reports the Mirror, with his wealth standing at £23.3m ($31.3m), according to the PGA. This year, he has pocketed £4.7m ($6.4m) across 16 events, including his £1.31m payday after finishing T2 at the Travelers Championship in June.
His earnings are supplemented by lucrative endorsement deals with Nike, Taylormade and Tag Heuer. However, Fleetwood's wife and agent Clare has previously stated that Fleetwood intentionally declines some opportunities to earn extra money.
"You know we've turned down loads, absolutely loads because I just know his time," she shared on the Performance People podcast in 2023. "I genuinely know that day will be more important to him at home than whatever is being made in the bank account and I don't care about the bank account either as much, so I'm on his wavelength."
Fleetwood first encountered his future wife Clare through his brother Joe, who worked with her at Hambric Sports Management. The golfer joined the company as a client in 2015 but Fleetwood revealed that he had already formed a connection with Clare.
"I get on well with Clare Craig, too, who is vice-president of Europe," he penned in his Golf Monthly blog in June 2015. "She's always been around on Tour, and I've chatted to her a lot over the years."
Later that year, Clare took on the role of Fleetwood's manager and their professional relationship blossomed into a romantic one. The pair tied the knot in 2017 and have a son named Frankie together, along with two stepsons from Clare's previous relationship.
Born in Southport, Fleetwood relocated his family to Dubai in 2022. Despite their eventual marriage, Clare initially rebuffed Fleetwood when he proposed starting a romantic relationship.
The 56 year old was apprehensive about the dynamic, not just because they were colleagues. "We've got a 23-year age difference," she revealed on the Performance People podcast. "Of course, I turned him down. I was like, 'Don't be stupid'.
Fleetwood shared how he eventually won over his wife's heart, saying: "Well, she just eventually gave in, think and thought, 'I'll just give him some time. I'll give him the time of day and then we'll go from there.
"And then I didn't mess up." Clare did ponder quitting her job as Fleetwood's manager when their romance sparked, but after a six-month trial, they both agreed she could handle both roles. She detailed the advantages of being both Fleetwood's spouse and agent, especially when it comes to financial matters.
"I know everything on every side – so there's sponsorship side, the logistics side, the PR side, the accounts side, everything," Clare stated. "Maybe sometimes too much you know, because then that's all I think about sometimes but that's just the different dynamic."
She also described the complexity of decision-making in her dual role, noting: "I look at one question – it might have 15 answers for me. Do you know what I mean?
"It's a little bit more complicated for me because I see things you know like – are we going to live? I don't see it as a lifestyle choice necessarily, I'll look at it as a business choice as well."

Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood clinch Ryder Cup spots

August 11 - With their performances at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, England's Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood clinched spots on Team Europe for the Ryder Cup next month against the United States. Rose, who won the $20 million tournament in Memphis in a playoff, and Fleetwood, who struggled down the stretch to finish one shot off the pace, earned enough points to join Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy as automatic qualifiers for the competition on Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y. Team Europe captain Luke Donald is required to select the top six players in the Europe Team Rankings when the British Masters concludes on Aug. 24. Donald gets to choose the other six golfers to round out his team, which will defend the Cup it won in 2023 in Italy. "Amazing to have both of these guys back on the Team," Donald wrote on X above a Ryder Cup Europe post on Rose and Fleetwood making the team. "They bring so much both on and off the course. Let's Go!" Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, England's Tyrrell Hatton and Austria's Sepp Straka hold fourth through sixth place heading into this week's play. MacIntyre will be part of the BMW Championship field at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Straka, however, withdrew from the $20 million tournament on Monday for family reasons. Hatton will be playing the LIV Tour event in Indianapolis, where he can not collect points. Ireland's Shane Lowry, Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg are within striking range of being automatic qualifiers. Lowry trails Straka for sixth by just 21.16 points. As long as Lowry completes the BMW Championship this weekend, he'll earn enough points to climb past Hatton and Straka. Competitors at the BMW Championship receive 1.5 points for each $1,000 they earn. --Field Level Media

Sepp Straka withdraws from BMW Championship

August 11 - World No. 10 Sepp Straka of Austria withdrew from the BMW Championship on Monday due to a private family matter, leaving the field for the FedEx Playoffs event shy of the expected 50 qualified players. "For personal reasons, Sepp is unable to play this week. He intends to compete at the TOUR Championship, but requests privacy at this time as he attends to a family matter at home," said Butler Melnyk, Straka's manager, in a statement released to media on Monday. Straka has two wins this season and is fifth in the playoff standings and sixth in the European Ryder Cup standings. He tied for 17th in the playoff-opening event in Memphis last week. He has six top-10 finishes this season and won The American Express and the Truist Championship. Last week, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy withdrew from the FedEx St. Jude Championship. As PGA Tour playoff rules stipulate, only qualified golfers will participate this week, meaning Straka will not be replaced in the field. --Field Level Media

Tommy Fleetwood's optimism is delusional — time to admit there's a problem

The good thing about professional sport when it all goes wrong is that there is always next week. The bad thing for Tommy Fleetwood is that next week is in the United States again. The FedEx Cup play-off circus moves on to Caves Valley in Maryland and the BMW Championship, with Fleetwood ruminating on another missed opportunity to break his American duck. Sunday evening's late unravelling in Memphis, following on from the Travelers Championship collapse in June, revealed a player stuck in a loop of agonising near-misses on the PGA Tour. Worryingly for Fleetwood, the storyline of a player who just cannot win in America is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. He looked like someone fearing the worst when the tournament reached crunch time. As Justin Rose ran towards the fire over the closing holes to take the FedEx St Jude Championship to a play-off against US Open champion JJ Spaun — which he won at the third extra hole — Fleetwood retreated.
