Literary, cultural festival in Kagwad tomorrow
General secretary of KVS Shankar Halgatti told presspersons in Dharwad on Tuesday that while Kannadigas are peace-loving people who honour other languages and cultures, their lenience should not be considered as weakness and none should try to intimidate them.
He said that although Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, some elements in Maharashtra are trying hard to disturb peace and spread enmity leading to linguistic tension in the border which is uncalled for.
'The sangha is holding the literary and cultural event at Kagwad to give a befitting reply to such elements through the Kannada awareness programme,' he said.
The programme titled Kannada Awareness and Cultural Celebration in the Border Region on Thursday in Kagwad is being organised in association with the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority and the Shivananada College of Kagwad.
Chairman of Karnataka Border Area Development Authority Somanna Bevinmarad will inaugurate the event at 10 a.m. and Swami Yatishwaranand of Kagwad and scholar Gurulingappa Dubale will participate, he said. The event will be presided over by sangha president Chandrakant Bellad.
Prior to the main event, a procession will be taken out from Channamma Circle in Kagwad to the venue. Post the inauguration, there will be various literary sessions and cultural events at 6 p.m., he said.

Keni fishers to seek full draft of EIA report in Kannada during public hearing on August 22
The local fisher community in Keni village near Ankola in Uttara Kannada have resolved to demand a Kannada version of the draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for a proposed commercial port in the region, during a public hearing on August 22. While the English version of the draft report, prepared for the proposed all-weather deep-water port by JSW Infrastructure, is around 600 pages, the Kannada version is only a 48-page executive summary, which the fishers allege prevents the local community from understanding critical details. Access to information 'We are sending a legal letter, and during the public hearing, our primary demand would be to have a full EIA report in Kannada,' said Sreeja Chakroborthy, environmental lawyer and founder of Living Environment Advocacy Foundation. She noted that failure to provide a full draft in Kannada is a violation of the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022. 'Most of the local people can understand only Kannada. There is a strong demand that they don't want the public hearing unless the 600-page EIA report is translated and given in English,' she said. According to her, although the EIA draft should have been circulated in seven village panchayats, only two have received it. 'Hasty job' According to experts, not only has the report been done hastily, but a comparison of the English and Kannada versions reveals discrepancies between the two. 'They have done a three-month study from December 2024 to February 2025. Normally, to understand the situation in an area, one year is the mandatory time to prepare an EIA,' said Soumya Dutta, trustee at Movement for Advancing Understanding of Sustainability and Mutuality. Mr. Dutta was in the region to assess the situation at the invitation of local communities. He noted that although the company claims that a large part of the port would be on reclaimed land, it would still result in the displacement of the traditional fishers' fishing grounds. According to him, the environmental impact of the port proposed on the western side of the Western Ghats region will be huge, resulting in the blocking of drainage channels and flooding. Multiple discrepancies V.N. Nayak, a marine biologist from Ankola, has written to the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district pointing out several 'discrepancies' between the two versions of the report and highlighting the crucial gaps in them. He noted that while the Kannada version initially mentioned that the project is a private port, it later termed it as 'public-private participation.' In the English version, there is no mention of public participation, he pointed out. While the draft EIA report mentions the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) as the only major port along the coastline of Karnataka, Nayak points out that there are three ports in Karnataka, with two ports — Karwar and Belekeri — in the Uttara Kannada region itself. 'Expansion of Karwar port is already under way, and the cargo mentioned to be imported and exported from the proposed port is the same as in Karwar. In Honnavar's Kasarkod-tonka village, a port is proposed, and two more are in line. Would we still need this port when all these upcoming ports become operational?' he questioned. Locals protest In February, hundreds of fishers jumped into the Arabian Sea to mark their protest against the proposed port. Most of the protesters were women. The ₹6,515-crore project will occupy 457 acres for a reclaimed foreshore facility. Further, land would be acquired for road, rail and pipeline corridors and storage facilities. Almost 7,500 traditional fishers from nearly 2,000 families live within a 5km radius of the project site, and they fear that the port would detrimentally affect their livelihoods.

Wayanad, where Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is the MP, witnessed a series of devastating landslides caused by heavy rains in some villages at Meppadi. More than 300 were killed in one of the state's deadliest disasters. The BJP, however, accused the Congress government in Karnataka for squandering the state's disaster fund saying the money belongs to Kannadigas and not the Gandhi family's fortunes. Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra directly addressed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on social media and alleged that he has 'diverted" Kannadiga taxpayers' money to Wayanad simply because it is Priyanka Gandhi's constituency. He said this act is not borne from compassion, but servitude for the Gandhis. He accused Siddaramaiah of making the excuse of fund crunch when it came to providing relief for farmers reeling from crop loss or grant money for basic infrastructure. He added: 'When our farmers reel under crop loss, when MLAs don't even get basic grants to lay foundation stones, when schools & colleges lack infrastructure – you claim there is no money. 'Congratulations to the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri @siddaramaiah, for allocating a special grant of 10 crore rupees to the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency represented by Priyanka Gandhi," Ashoka said in a post on 'X'. He said if Karnataka also had a 'compassionate and large-hearted Chief Minister like Kerala's Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah", all constituencies would have received abundant funding. The ruling Congress defended its move to provide humanitarian aid and said there is nothing wrong in doing charity. Reacting to the state government's decision, health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said there was nothing wrong in doing charity which is being done on humanitarian grounds. 'Karnataka gives thousands and thousands of crores of rupees to the Centre but what do we get in return? That's the bigger question. Not these small-small things. These were all done out of humanitarian considerations," Rao said. He said the people of Karnataka should always feel pride in themselves for being good to neighbours. He alleged that these were all diversionary issues of the BJP, which was trying to create a divide between Karnataka and Kerala. 'We are all there for each other. When we do something out of humanitarian considerations, then that should not be looked at in a suspicious or negative manner," he said. Rao further said the Karnataka government has done so many things in many other states, such as Gujarat and Odisha. 'So many times, so many crises happen, and we contribute and support. This is a very narrow way of looking at things. I don't think even people will appreciate it," he added. "Diverted Rs 10 Crore Because...": BJP Livid Over Karnataka Funds For Wayanad
The move of Karnataka's Siddaramaiah government to give a Rs 10-crore grant to families affected by landslides in Kerala's Wayanad has set up a fresh face-off with the state's Opposition BJP. Multiple leaders have objected to the largesse, alleging that funds are being diverted to Wayanad because it is the constituency of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The leaders have also pointed out that when in the Opposition, Mr Siddaramaiah had coined the "My tax, my right" slogan, holding the government responsible for the funds it spent. The Congress has pointed out that the help was sent to Wayanad as a humanitarian measure. "India is a large country. Whenever something happens in Nepal or other places, we give funds. Whether it is Maharashtra or any other state, we provide grants during floods and other disasters. States also give funds to other states. There is nothing wrong in that," said the state's industries minister MB Patil. The BJP, however, has pointed out that Rs 10 crore for 100 families would mean Rs 10 lakh for each family - an unprecedented amount that only matches ex gratia for loss of lives in rare cases. "The government gave 10 crore to the people of Wayanad. The CM has allocated 75 per cent to Karnataka and 25 per cent to Wayanad. In Karnataka, elephant trainers get only 5 lakh compensation, while in Wayanad it is 15 lakh," said senior BJP leader CP Patil.
