A daily Pokémon puzzle game is out now as part of a busy lineup
Elsewhere, we also got looks at a pair of animated adaptations of the franchise. That includes the soothing Netflix series Pokémon Concierge, which is getting a second season on September 4th…
And Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu, a stop-motion series from a previously-announced collaboration with Wallace & Gromit studio Aardman. It won't be premiering until 2027, however.
It's shaping up to be a big year for the franchise, as it will also be making its debut on the Switch 2 with Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which will be a cross-gen title available on both versions of the Switch when it launches on October 16th. As part of today's presentation, we got a pair of new trailers, focused on the new location Lumiose City and all the various things players can get up to there.
Meanwhile, there are some notable updates to some of the franchise's many mobile spinoffs, including Mega Evolutions coming to the trading card game as part of an expansion in September, and a new area coming to Pokémon Sleep in November. And lastly, the Pokémon Company confirmed that the battle-focused spinoff Pokémon Champions will be launching in 2026. It'll be on both mobile and the Switch.

Amazon MGM Studio's James Bond film names ‘Peaky Blinders' writer
The upcoming James Bond movie now has a writer attached to the project. Steven Knight, who has penned projects like Eastern Promises, Apple TV+'s See, Locke and Netflix's wildly popular Peaky Blinders series, was announced as the script writer on Thursday afternoon. He will join director Denis Villeneuve on the highly-anticipated project. David Heyman and Amy Pascal have signed on to produce the project, the first Bond movie in its new home at Amazon MGM Studios. Amazon acquired MGM in 20212, taking control of the extensive collection of 007 movies. It wasn't until February of 2025, however, that the studio was able to negotiate a deal for the rights to the creative control of the character. There has not been a new James Bond announced yet, but the search is apparently on. That hasn't stopped fans from coming up with their own theories on who could take over the mantle from Daniel Craig. Names like Idris Elba, Damson Idris, Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi and Harris Dickinson have all been in the online conversation. Craig became Bond in 2006's Casino Royale and went on to star in five total movies as 007. His final outing as the dapper spy was in 2021 with No Time To Die.

10 Best Fake Songs From Fake Movie Bands
This summer has seen some pretty catchy needle drops in movies, from Superman's Mighty Crabjoys to KPop Demon Hunters flash mob fandoms for Huntr/x and the Saja Boys. The latter Netflix release has reached not only Billboard music charts but also become the most streamed animated feature ever. With that in mind, we look back at our favorite fake bands' best songs of the past 30 years. While half the list includes incredible recent music from hit movies, the other half (and our number one slot) nod at the songs that really propelled this particular niche in movies—think A Goofy Movie. So, if you notice some of your favorites missing, simmer down because we excluded musicals and kept to genre movies that had original songs featured in them. Like Superman, we can't help but think this song is for the cool kids. No matter how hard we tried, we could not get 'Try Everything' out of our heads, and Gazelle (voiced by Shakira) might be back in Zootopia 2. Finally, the full single from Freaky Friday has been released for Freakier Friday sung by Pink Slip's in-universe lead singer Christina Vidal Mitchell. Josie and the Pussycats was such an underrated gem when it came out but was formative for millennials. We know there are so many songs, and it was hard to narrow it to one, so we went with 'Three Small Words' (featuring Kay Hanley as the voice of lead singer Josie), which encompasses the moment in time this movie embodies for a generation. Sammie (Miles Caton) in the Sinners universe went on to become a blues legend, but the night that changed his life was when he first performed 'I Lied to You.' The scene is hands down one of Ryan Coogler's masterpieces, and the music sizzles off the celluloid fever dream… just watch. It took a few years, but the Envy Adams (Brie Larson) on-screen performance of the Clash at Demonhead's 'Black Sheep' was finally released on Spotify and other platforms to enjoy. We love Metric's version, but the angst in the movie version is top tier. The Billie Eilish and Finneas-produced songs from Pixar's Turning Red are all so good. This one was also hard to narrow down, but the chorus of 'Nobody Like U' is never not on my mind. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack also has too many killer songs from each band to pick from. While I particularly love 'Soda Pop,' we have to give the Saja Boys props for 'Your Idol' for charting on Billboard. In 'Golden,' we get lyricist Ejae's heart and soul shining through. The powerful anthem is coming for 'Let It Go''s crown in replayability among young animation fans. Powerline is the blueprint, the O.G. of modern fake music pop stars thanks to A Goofy Movie. Vocalist Tevin Campbell made an icon so scene-stealing we're still waiting for a full Powerline album 30 years later… or at least a sequel with more fake music to dance to. Want more io9 news? Revisit some of the best games on PlayStation Plus this weekend (August 1-3)
August is going to be a big month for game news thanks to Gamescom, but not so much for releases until the end. That's when we'll get our hands on Metal Gear Solid: Delta and the PS5 exclusive Lost Soul Aside. As always, we also have some great new PlayStation Plus games on the way on August 5, but that means we have one more weekend to fill before getting our hands on another excellent month of games. I'll be the first to say that navigating the backlog of games on PS Plus is cumbersome to say the least, but there are tons of top-tier games hidden in those menus you may not know are there. This weekend, join me in giving these awesome games some love. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition Devil May Cry was the latest video game show to get adapted back in April thanks to the animated Netflix show that perfectly recaptured that early 2000s style. While it took some liberties with the lore and characters, it brought a ton of attention to the original series. Everyone has their personal favorite entry, but Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition is widely considered to be the peak of the stylish action franchise. The Special Edition is built specifically with current-gen systems in mind for perfect performance, amazing graphics, but also a ton of new content. The most exciting of which is the ability to play as Virgil in addition to Nero, Dante, and V. If you like styling on demons, seeing some of the craziest cutscenes in gaming, and over-the-top battles, you will struggle to find a better game than this. Recommended Videos Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. World War Z: Aftermath One of the most interesting games coming to PS Plus next month is the cult classic DayZ. This survival game originated as a mod of another game, Arma 2, before expanding into its own massive zombie survival game. It is a hardcore and punishing take on zombie games, but also old, clunky, and it demands a lot of time to become proficient in. What I suggest as an alternative, or warm-up if you're keen on that type of experience, is World War Z: Aftermath. This zombie shooter is much more on the arcade-y side of the scale, playing more like a Left 4 Dead game, only with hundreds more zombies swarming you at a time. If you played Space Marine 2 last year, this is from the same team so you can expect that same level of mayhem. Grab some friends and have a blast ripping thousands of zombies to shreds. World War Z: Aftermath is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising I'll talk more about it next week, but we have a somewhat weak anime game coming next week. Sadly, it is still a rarity when a game based on an anime is even average, let alone good. But if there's one studio you can count on to make an amazing anime fighter, it's Arc System Works. This is the team that made Dragon Ball FighterZ and my pick for this week, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. Don't let the fact that it's a fighting game turn you off — there are tons of beginner-friendly options and tutorials to get you pulling off combos and flashy supers in no time. Plus, there are tons of side modes and a fully featured single-player mode to play with. With full rollback netcode, though, this game plays like a dream online. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is available now on PS4, PS5, and PC.
