Anthony Albanese says he does not want to see Vladimir Putin 'rewarded' after the Russian President met with Donald Trump this weekend discuss Ukraine. While both leaders hailed the talks as 'productive' and 'constructive', they emerged from their 'Pursuing Peace' summit in Alaska with little but pledges to keep talking. Though, in a big win for Mr Putin, he got a red-carpet welcome and photographed handshakes with the US President while the war in Ukraine raged on. The Prime Minister on Sunday said it was a 'good thing' that parties were talking. 'It is a good thing that President Trump is an advocate for peace,' Mr Albanese told reporters in Perth. 'What we want to see is that the sovereignty of Ukraine be protected and that the illegal and immoral invasion conducted by Mr Putin and Russia are not very rewarded.' He added that standing up for international rule of law was important, too. 'It's also important because of the precedent that Russia's invasion sets of a powerful nation invading a much smaller nation and engaging in the brutality, which we have seen at great cost to the Ukrainian people, but also at a great cost to Russian soldiers who've lost their lives as well,' Mr Albanese said. Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko also warned not taking a firm line with Mr Putin would embolden him. 'Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 – they grabbed Crimea, they invaded eastern parts of Ukraine and started the war,' Mr Myroshnychenko told Sky News. 'They got inspired and emboldened by the weak reaction to what they had done and invaded Ukraine again eight years later, with a goal of subjugating the entire nation, occupying Kyiv and the entire territory of Ukraine.' He said his country 'wants to achieve peace more than anybody else because Ukrainians get killed, our country is getting destroyed'. Mr Myroshnychenko also said Australia has 'skin in the game because this is going to shape the security and stability of the Indo-Pacific'. 'Because if Russia can end up even technically controlling 20 per cent of Ukrainian territory, it will be a blueprint for any other authoritarian leader here in the region to follow the same path and just do the same thing,' he said, in a nod to China. Mr Trump met Mr Putin without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, raising eyebrows in Kyiv and across Europe. Mr Zelenskyy will meet with Mr Trump in Washington on Monday. Ahead of their meeting, the Ukrainian leader said that 'Russia rebuffs numerous calls for a ceasefire and has not yet determined when it will stop the killing'. 'This complicates the situation,' he said. 'If they lack the will to carry out a simple order to stop the strikes, it may take a lot of effort to get Russia to have the will to implement far greater – peaceful coexistence with its neighbors for decades. 'But together we are working for peace and security. 'Stopping the killing is a key element of stopping the war.' Ukraine has lost nearly 400,000 troops since Russia invaded in February, 2022, according to research from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The think tank put the death toll at just under 1 million for Russia.

Victim's girlfriend among nine teens arrested in 16-year-old's beach town murder
Nine South Carolina teenagers were arrested in the June shooting death of a 16-year-old who authorities say was involved in an argument 'over a girl' with his alleged shooter, according to local reports. The victim's 17-year-old girlfriend is among the suspects. Florence County Sheriff's department found Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, dead with multiple gunshot wounds on June 24, authorities said previously. He was found about 70km west of Myrtle Beach. The following day, they arrested Devan Scott Raper, a 19-year-old from Conway, who allegedly fatally shot Wright after an argument. At least one teen involved reportedly recorded the slaying on video. And deputies continued to announce new arrests for weeks as the investigation dug deeper. 'All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,' Wright's mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital. 'I don't even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.' Now, an entire group of teens, many of them juveniles, are facing charges, some for allegedly setting Wright up and bringing Raper to the victim's location, knowing he was armed, according to authorities. One of the suspects was Wright's girlfriend, Gianna Kistenmacher, a Myrtle Beach 17-year-old, his mother said. Kistenmacher was charged with being an accessory before the fact for allegedly bringing Raper to the crime scene knowing he was both armed and likely to kill her boyfriend, according to a press release from the police department's office. Lawyers confirmed that nine teens had been charged but declined to comment further to Fox News, citing the ongoing investigation. 'They were complicit in bringing the armed co-defendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,' Maj. Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff's Office told local media, WBTW-TV, which is based in Florence, South Carolina. 'They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.' He told the Post and Courier separately that, under state law, all five are charged as adults. Prosecutors filed additional murder charges against three more Myrtle Beach-area teens, identified as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns, according to WBTW. 'The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that's the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,' Nunn told the station. Sheriff T.J. Joye told the station separately that the fatal shooting appeared to have stemmed from an argument and apparent romantic rivalry. 'They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,' he reportedly said. 'The sad thing is, you got a 16-year-old that lost his life. You've got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?' Raper faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and is being held without bond. Kendall is also being held without bond. Belviso and Kearns each posted AU$30,000 surety bonds last week and have been released pending a trial.

In letter to Putin, US first lady asks him to consider the children in push to end war
Melania Trump has taken the unique step of crafting a letter that calls for peace in Ukraine and had her husband President Donald Trump hand-deliver it to Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Alaska. The letter did not specifically name Ukraine, which Putin's forces invaded in 2022, but implored him to think of children and "an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology". Nor did the American first lady discuss the fighting, other than to say to Mr Putin that he could "single-handedly restore" the "melodic laughter" of children who have been caught in the conflict. "In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone — you serve humanity itself," she wrote on White House stationery. A copy of the letter was first obtained by Fox News Digital and later posted on social media by supporters of the US president, including Attorney General Pam Bondi. The first lady said that Mr Putin could help the children with the stroke of a pen. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conveyed his gratitude to the first lady on his call with Mr Trump on Saturday, Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said. Previously Moscow had said it was protecting vulnerable children from the war zone. However, the United Nations Human Rights Office said Russia had inflicted suffering on millions of Ukrainian children and violated their rights since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
