Eight-hour police standoff ends with man taking his own life

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, a standoff occurred between a male suspect and the De Beque Marshal's department, Mesa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) and Palisade Police Department. The standoff ended around 8:05 p.m. after police deployed flashbangs and the male suspect took his life. According to Mesa County Sheriff Sgt. Linda Bowman, the standoff started after the male suspect had allegedly pointed a shotgun at a De Beque marshal after she attempted to contact the man on outstanding warrants. The incident started near the De Beque Country Store on Third Street and Minter Avenue. The man then went to a park gazebo at De Beque Park, where he had barricaded himself during the eight-hour standoff. A shelter-in-place, building evacuations and road blockages were put in place during the standoff. There is no ongoing danger to the public at this time, but MCSO asked the community to avoid the area. There is no additional information about the incident or the suspect at this time.
