Akmal urges expelled leaders to set aside ego and rejoin party

Focus Malaysia05-07-2025
UMNO Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh has urged suspended or expelled party leaders to put aside their egos if they still love UMNO, stressing the need for unity to strengthen the party.
He said president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is open to appeals from them and offered to facilitate their return, naming Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Khairy Jamaluddin, and Shahril Hamdan.
'We need them (the suspended or expelled former leaders). As I said in my speech earlier, UMNO belongs to everyone and must be reunited. But with one condition: each of them must put their ego aside, love the party, and, God willing, UMNO will become stronger,' he said.
Akmal emphasised UMNO is a family, and their past contributions cannot be forgotten.
'UMNO is a family for everyone. So, those who have faced disciplinary actions have contributions we cannot forget.
'That's why I said what is most important is UMNO's unity, and of course, this unity cannot happen from only one side,' he told reporters after officiating the Seremban UMNO Youth Division Conference on Friday (July 4).
Several UMNO leaders have asked Hishammuddin to write an apology letter to the party leadership if he wishes to return.
However, Hishammuddin said he did nothing wrong and sees no reason to apologise. He added that he never requested to return or have his suspension lifted; it was the Sembrong branch that proposed UMNO should bring him back.
The conflict also attracted comments from Wanita UMNO's leader, Nurulhidayah Zahid, who then said, 'When it comes to filing an appeal, it's not kowtowing but a sign of responsibility to those who had used the platform to boost their names and struggles.' — July 5, 2025

[UPDATED] Anwar to confer with PKR sec-gen on Umno's objection letter

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will consult PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh over Umno's letter objecting to former members joining other parties in the unity government. He confirmed the matter when asked by reporters after the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly today. "We received the letter some time ago. I will check with the secretary-general," he briefly said. On Aug 17, PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed receipt of the letter, adding that the party's central leadership council is expected to deliberate on it by the end of the month. The objection followed Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirming his membership with PKR last week after leaving Umno. "PKR's secretary-general has received and forwarded the letter to the leadership. Insya-Allah, we will discuss this at the central committee meeting at the end of this month, before Merdeka Day," he said. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had earlier said the party would send a protest note to all unity government component parties that have accepted or plan to accept former Umno members. He warned that such actions could strain relation s within the coalition. On May 30, Tengku Zafrul resigned from Umno and later expressed his intention to join PKR. On Aug 8, he confirmed that his application had been accepted and that he was now a member of Ampang PKR.

In a statement, the AGC said the decision followed an examination of investigation papers submitted by the police. 'Based on the testimony and evidence obtained, this department has decided to bring charges under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code against Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Muhammad Hilman Idham and Siti Hajar Aflah Sharuddin,' it said. 'The statements made by these individuals were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or network services.' The AGC said all charges will be filed at the Magistrates' Court with the relevant local jurisdiction soon. It added that the statements in question were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or services. Section 505(b) handles those causing fear or alarm to the public, and to induce them to commit an offence against public order. If convicted, a person can be punished with a prison term up to two years, a fine, or both. Hilman is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief, with his charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. It is unsure which Facebook post is responsible for Dr Akmal's charge. Meanwhile, Chandrasegaran Subramaniam will be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. Last week, Dr Akmal said he was called by the federal police to give his statement over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang. The AGC had previously warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over the Umno Youth protest. Dr Akmal has since posted on Facebook that he is abroad performing umrah, or the Muslim minor pilgrimage to Mecca, and will return early to face the charge at the Magistrates' Court in Bukit Mertajam on Friday. lead Muhamad Akmal Salleh

Anwar to consult PKR sec-gen after Umno sends protest note over defections

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 — PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said today that he will consult party secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh after Umno sent a protest note over its members jumping over. New Straits Times also reported the prime minister confirming the receipt of the letter today, echoing remarks by other party leaders. 'We received the letter some time ago. I will check with the secretary-general,' he told reporters on the sidelines of the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly here. Previously, PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil had confirmed that the party has received the latter and its central leadership council will review the matter by the end of the month. Last week, Umno said it will protest against any of its allies in the government who have allowed or planning to take its members to join their ranks. Its secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warned that such a move will lead to a rift within the government coalition. This comes after Supreme Council member and Kota Raja Umno chief Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced his resignation from Umno and expressed his intention to join PKR on May 30. Tengku Zafrul said earlier this month his application to join PKR has since been approved and he is now a member of the Ampang division.
