Former ESPN star Trey Wingo rips what network has become

New York Post18 hours ago
Former ESPN host Trey Wingo is not particularly pleased with the present-day programming on the network.
Responding to a complaint that 'you used to be able to turn on ESPN and not see Stephen A. Smith or Pat McAfee,' the former 'NFL Primetime' host agreed that the Worldwide Leader's direction isn't one he's on board with.
'Let me preface this by saying I have so many wonderful memories and so many great friends still working there that I want to succeed,' Wingo wrote on X on Tuesday. 'But he's right. It used to be a glorious buffet where you could pick and choose what you wanted. Now it's like a banquet dinner: chicken or fish?'

Wingo was a part of ESPN from 1997 up until 2020, and in recent years has watched flagship shows like 'Around the Horn' and 'Outside the Lines' get canceled and replaced by Smith and McAfee as centerpieces of network programming.
At the time of writing, ESPN produces four talk shows, with half featuring McAfee and Smith. That's down from 2017, when the network produced seven of those types of programs. The two talking heads are also fixtures of 'SportsCenter,' which airs 10 hours per day.

McAfee, the former NFL punter, has become ubiquitous with his titular show and 'College GameDay' gig among others, and drew plenty of scrutiny for his work on Monday's MLB Home Run Derby broadcast — and seemed to lean into it a bit.
'Good morning beautiful people Fresh off a break.. got a chance to do something new with a different sport..,' McAfee wrote on X Tuesday morning. 'I really enjoyed it and think it went exactly how all parties envisioned it.. let's see what X has to say…'

The results weren't exactly complimentary — nor were they as tactful as Wingo.
What's clear, however, is that ESPN has changed its tack and it's all-in on its current stars, whether the old guard likes it or not.

Quinyon Mitchell recognized as top-10 cornerback by NFL execs

Quinyon Mitchell's stellar rookie season has garnered him national attention Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell took the NFL's top pass-catchers out of games last year, and league circles are taking notice. ESPN released their latest position rankings on Thursday, listing the top-10 cornerbacks heading into the 2025 season. Mitchell came in at No. 9 according to league executives, coaches, and scouts. Here is the full top 10 from ESPN's poll: 9. Quinyon Mitchell, Philadelphia Eagles Mitchell, the youngest player on this list, turns 24 tomorrow, signaling the Eagles have the outside covered for years to come. Mitchell was stellar in the predraft process in 2024 and continued that momentum throughout his rookie season. When a receiver catches a pass in Mitchell's vicinity, he doesn't go far. Mitchell allowed an average of 1.5 yards after catch as the nearest defender in coverage last season, the fewest by any player with at least 30 targets. The next closest was Surtain at 1.9. In three playoff games, Mitchell allowed seven yards after the catch on five receptions. "Loved him coming out -- heard a lot about him throughout the season, and it looked like teams tried to find ways to throw away from him," an NFL coordinator said. "He proved to be able to handle 1s." "His biggest thing is confidence," an NFL passing game coordinator said. "He barely played press in college but got in people's pockets. He got really good at that." Mitchell was a projected top-15 pick coming into last year's draft, but a run of offensive selections pushed him down the board. When he was available at No. 22 overall, GM Howie Roseman sprinted to the podium and never looked back. The Eagles received early returns on their investment — Mitchell finished the 2024 season with 12 pass breakups and forfeited just 472 yards in coverage all year. Opposing quarterbacks completed 54.7% of pass attempts when targeting Mitchell. He only allowed 74 yards after the catch (4.6 yards per contest); receivers went down nearly instantly when catching balls in Mitchell's vicinity. Vic Fangio knew early last spring what he had in Mitchell. The Defensive Rookie of the Year runner-up played in 96% of the defensive snaps, holding down his side of the field opposite Darius Slay en route to a Super Bowl title. With Slay signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency, Mitchell is now the certified CB1 in Philadelphia for 2025 and beyond.

Kristin Cavallari says she's ‘too old' to keep dating athletes: ‘Where are the hot coaches?'

Kristin Cavallari is cutting athletes from her dating roster. During Tuesday's installment of her 'Let's Be Honest' podcast, the 'Very Cavallari' alum, 38, shared she'd be open to getting to know coaches, telling guest Patti Stanger, known as the 'Millionaire Matchmaker,' she's 'too old for athletes.' 'You know what would be great is like a coach,' Cavallari told Stanger during a discussion about dating. 'I'm too old for the athletes, but coaches, where are the hot coaches? Ex-ESPN star criticizes company's direction after fan complaint

Trey Wingo, a former ESPN staple on "SportsCenter" and "NFL Live," appeared to lament the direction of his former employer earlier this week in a post on social media. Wingo responded to another user on X who wrote, "Kids today don't realize it, but you used to be able to turn on ESPN and not see Stephen A. Smith or Pat McAfee. They were glorious times...." "Let me preface this by saying I have so many wonderful memories and so many great friends still working there that I want to succeed… but he's right," Wingo wrote Tuesday on X. "It used to be a glorious buffet where you could pick and choose what you wanted. Now it's like a banquet dinner: chicken or fish?" Smith has been a figurehead at ESPN for years and his popularity has only grown since he started doing "First Take" with Skip Bayless, Max Kellerman, Shannon Sharpe and others. He's appeared on NBA coverage and has his own podcast separate from ESPN. McAfee came into ESPN as one of the most popular podcasters in sports. The former Indianapolis Colts punter has feuded with ESPN execs since joining the company. But with his Q score improving, McAfee has been seen on "College Gameday" and on WWE broadcasts. "SportsCenter" is still a main part of ESPN programming in the mornings and evenings. However, the program lineup is such that it's not on throughout the mornings anymore. Wingo left ESPN in 2020 and has done work with Caesars Sportsbook and Peacock since then. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
