Time of India2 days ago

Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway: The much-awaited final stretch of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway will open on June 5, 2025. This major infrastructure project is set to transform road travel in Maharashtra by cutting the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 16 hours to just 8 hours. The expressway is also known as Samruddhi Mahamarg and is one of the longest and fastest highways in India.
Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Travel Time Reduced to 8 Hours
With the opening of the final 76-km stretch between Igatpuri (Nashik) and Amane (Thane), travelers will now be able to cover the 701-km distance at high speeds of up to 150 km/h. This drastically reduces the previous travel time and makes road travel more comfortable.
Key Routes and Interchanges on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway
The expressway features three major interchanges located at:
Igatpuri
Kutghar (Shahapur)
Amane (Thane)
These interchanges will improve connectivity and make the highway accessible from multiple points. The route passes through 10 districts and over 390 villages, supporting regional development.
Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway: Longest Road Tunnel at Kasara Ghat
A standout feature of this expressway is the 7.8-km tunnel at Kasara Ghat. It is the longest road tunnel in India. This tunnel replaces the old, winding roads that forced travelers to climb 450 meters through difficult terrain. The tunnel provides a safer and faster route. It cuts down on travel time and easing traffic congestion.
Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway: Infrastructure Highlights
The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is built with modern infrastructure, including:
33 major bridges
274 minor bridges
65 flyovers
6 tunnels
This will help in a smooth and uninterrupted travel along the entire stretch, making it a world-class expressway.
Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway: Cost and Development
The final stretch was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,182 crore. The project was jointly funded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The government plans to boost economic growth and connectivity between Mumbai and Nagpur through this expressway.

Funds to upgrade homes, training on hosting guests — Chhattisgarh's has a new homestay policy

Offering those living near forests, rivers, hills, lakes, or heritage sites of Chhattisgarh grants to upgrade their homes, training them on how to host guests and making registration of homestays simpler – these are among the major incentives that the state's Vishnu Deo Sai Cabinet has approved as part of its new homestay policy. Cleared by the Vishnu Deo Sai cabinet Wednesday, the policy aims at boosting tourism in Chhattisgarh. 'The policy aims to promote tourism in villages, particularly in remote areas of Bastar and Sarguja. It will offer tourists a unique experience of local culture, art, crafts, and nature while directly benefiting rural residents by increasing their income,' an official said. Under this scheme, those living in villages can offer some rooms 'not only to help tourists experience the beauty and culture of rural Chhattisgarh but also provide a good earning opportunity to local families'. A grant of up to Rs 10 lakh will be provided to help upgrade homes into homestays. Those running homestays will also receive training from the government to learn how to host guests. The scheme also proposes making registration and licencing simpler and relaxing taxation and regulation rules. 'This policy is especially designed to empower women and youth, helping them become self-reliant. Moreover, it will help spread the culture, food, language, and traditional lifestyle of Chhattisgarh to people across the country and even abroad,' an official said. To promote art and culture in Chhattisgarh, 10 acres of land will be allotted free of cost to the Department of Culture in New Raipur for setting up a 'Kalagram' — a hub for artisans, folk artists, and traditional craftsmen. Among other significant decisions are a national level Archery Academy in New Raipur. To be set up on 13.47 acres of land, the academy will feature both outdoor and indoor (air-conditioned) archery ranges, a high-performance centre, hostel and residential facilities. In addition, the Cabinet also gave its nod to the Chhattisgarh Kifayati Jan Awas Niyam-2025 – an affordable housing scheme that aims to provide plots in cities to lower and middle-class families. The Cabinet also approved Transfer Policy 2025 to facilitate transfer of district level employees with approval from the appropriate minister.

Diversions kick in for six-lane underpass to decongest Gaur Chowk

Noida: Vehicles travelling from Bisrakh and Surajpur to Noida have been restricted to the service lane on Greater Noida West Road as excavation on the carriageway began for a six-lane underpass near the congested Gaur Chowk. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 700-metre underpass, which is to run parallel to the Taj Highway, will allow vehicles coming from Surajpur to bypass the daily bottlenecks at Char Murti roundabout, also called Gaur Chowk, by connecting Greater Noida directly with Gaur City and Delhi-Meerut Expressway ahead. Greater Noida Authority CEO Ravi Kumar NG told TOI that a key section of the carriageway has now been blocked due to digging at the main intersection for the underpass. "Traffic from Bisrakh towards Noida will now use the service lane and then turn left towards Parthala. Commuters heading to Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Gaur City will have to take a left and then a U-turn to proceed. There are no restrictions for people travelling from Noida to Ek Murti Chowk ahead via the Gaur Chowk as the rotary has not been blocked," he said. More diversions are expected on the Taj Highway as the work progresses in the coming days, the official said. The Rs 92-crore project is expected to be ready in 18 months. Of the total length, 350 metres will stretch on either side of the roundabout. The underpass is among the several infrastructure projects undertaken by UP govt in the region, including Noida expressway bypass, Chilla Elevated Road and a flyway linking Ek Murti Chowk to DME, which are on the drawing boards anticipating heavy traffic movement in the area once the Noida airport becomes functional. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Gaur Chowk, a central traffic node in Greater Noida West, a housing hub accommodating over five lakh residents. The six-lane road, already under pressure from traffic pouring in from Noida, Surajpur, Crossings Republik, and the DME. While the Parthala flyover, inaugurated in 2023 on the Vikas Marg-FNG Expressway junction, eased bottlenecks at Parthala Chowk, it shifted the snarls towards Gaur Chowk. Over the years, traffic cops have tried to ease tailbacks by blocking two arms of the rotary and creating two U-turns, about 500 metres away from the intersection. However, with traffic volume increasing continuously, those measures proved inadequate. With more traffic restrictions likely over the next few months before the underpass is ready, motorists fear daily bottlenecks in the area. "While diversions are necessary, they're already causing traffic jams during peak hours. There's also dust pollution, as the contractor isn't following NGT's dust control guidelines," Amarjeet Rathore, a Gaur City resident, said. Meanwhile, despite traffic diversions, a number of bikers were seen plying on the wrong side of the service lane. Ecovillage 1 resident Manish Kumar said, "There was already traffic pressure due to diversion, and now people driving on the wrong side are further worsening the problem. Cops should be deployed in the area to check these violations."

Creek bridge at Vashi, Bhiwandi-Igatpuri stretch of Samruddhi super expressway to open today

Mumbai: The three-lane Mumbai-bound arm of the new Thane creek bridge at Vashi will be commissioned by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and his two deputies, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, on Thursday at 1 pm through an online ceremony from Igatpuri, where they will throw open the 76 km Bhiwandi-Igatpuri stretch of the Mumbai-Nagpur super expressway for motorists. With the opening of the south-bound arm, the traffic in the morning peak hours will get decongested as there will be six lanes available on the bridge against the existing three lanes, which caused a bottleneck given the 12-lane width of the Sion-Panvel highway on either side. The north-bound arm was opened in Oct, giving relief to the weekend traffic bound for tourist destinations. Given the toll naka that existed there, the bridge was a necessity amid the creation of the new airport, part of which is slated to open soon. Now, the state cabinet has given its formal approval to hand out Rs 780 crore assistance to the MSRDC to pay the toll collecting contractor, Mumbai Entry Point Ltd, to permanently do away with toll collection from cars and SUVs at five entry points of Mumbai, namely, Vashi, Airoli, Mulund, Thane and Dahisar. The traffic coming from old Nashik highway towards Mumbai and wanting to take the Samruddhi Mahamarg for Nagpur will have to take a left turn on a temporarily built road ahead of Shangrila junction in Bhiwandi at Aamne village and then take a U-turn via an underpass built 600 metres ahead of the junction, to eventually come back on the Nagpur-bound Samruddhi arm. MSRDC MD Anil Kumar Gaikwad said this temporary arrangement will be there only for four-five months till the Delhi-Mumbai expressway corridor completes the construction of the clover leaf junction that will offer smooth connectivity from all the directions.
