Caste survey 'flawed, fraudulent', claims Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha amid uproar over data gaps
BENGALURU: The caste survey report has sparked a storm across Karnataka, with the powerful Vokkaliga leaders meeting national chairman of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha Shamanur Shivashankarappa on Friday, and both communities unleashing a scathing attack on its credibility.
Labelling the survey 'completely unscientific', Veerashaiva Mahasabha National Secretary HM Renuka Prasanna alleged massive under-reporting, data manipulation and inexplicable omissions that he claimed amount to nothing short of demographic erasure. '66 lakh is a joke,' said Prasanna, rejecting the official figure for the Veerashaiva-Lingayat population.
'Other commissions have clearly stated our population is between 1.3 crore and 1.4 crore. How did this number suddenly shrink to half? It is not just the Lingayats. Several caste populations seem grossly inflated or deflated beyond logic," Prasanna said.
"Muslims and Kurubas have been shown to be 94% and 74% higher, while the population of Lingayats, Vokkaligas, Brahmins and Jains has mysteriously dwindled. 'Upper caste families showing just one child each? That's fiction,' he added.
Even more baffling are discrepancies in subgroup counts. 'Only 2.5 lakh Sadar 2A Hindus,' Prasanna asked, insisting that this is off by a huge margin. 'There should be 67,000 in just one region. How can Davangere alone have 4-5 lakh and the total number can still be less,' he added.
Nonabas from Tumakuru to Hubballi have been shown as a mere 1.5 lakh — a figure he stated as 'wildly inaccurate'.
The massive Panchamasali sect, shown as 10 lakh across two heads, is allegedly missing 10 lakh people. A Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha member termed the exercise as political sidelining.
'Former chief ministers like S Nijalingappa, BD Jatti, Veerendra Patil, SR Kanti, JH Patel, and Jagdish Shettar — all Banajiga Lingayats — come from a community shown as just around 1 lakh, whereas they should easily number 10 lakh or more,' he said.
Sub-sects like Reddy Lingayats, Ganiga Lingayats, Hande Wazir, Agasa, Hadpad, and Gowli Lingayats, have allegedly been sidelined or poorly counted. Even worse, 16 Lingayat sub-sects are entirely missing from the enumeration, raising red flags about the methodology of the survey.
'Meanwhile, Muslim data is perfect. Why? Because they ensured religion, caste, and sub-caste aligned properly during enumeration. We didn't get that chance.' he fumed. 'This survey is not just flawed — it's fraudulent. It's unscientific, inconsistent, and deeply damaging,' alleged Prasanna.

Bajrang Dal warns protest in Karnataka

Further, the govt has been trying to bring a bad reputation to the organisation by filing false cases against activists and leaders. In the coastal district, the govt continued its agenda by adding the names of Bajrang Dal leaders to the list of rowdy-sheeters and goonda elements, he said. "Bajrang Dal is a nationalist organisation engaged in hundreds of activities including the protection of cows, women, children, and other initiatives. If Kumdelu's name is included in the case, we will hold protests in all district headquarters and villages," he warned. Police visiting Hindu activists at midnight is an effort to suppress the organisation. He condemned police search at Kumdelu's house. Further, he urged police to find the actual reason behind the murder of Abdul Rahiman to ascertain whether he was killed because of personal enmity. Bajrang Dal leaders Bhujanga Kulal and Puneeth Attavar were present.

Bakrid celebrated with prayers, unity
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The Muslim community across Odisha celebrated Eid Al Adha on Saturday with traditional fervour marked by mass prayers at mosques and idgahs, though rising animal prices dampened the festivities a bit. The festival, also known as Bakrid, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to Allah and his willingness to sacrifice his son. While the ritual sacrifice of animals remains central to the celebration, many devotees opted out this year due to unprecedented price increases of sacrificial animals. "The animal prices are exceptionally high this year and beyond my means. I had to forgo the ritual," said Altaf Hussain, a resident of Dumduma. The celebration, which coincides with the culmination of the annual Haj pilgrimage in Mecca, saw Muslims sharing festivities with friends and relatives across religious communities. Special feasts were organised maintaining the spirit of community bonding. Local authorities implemented comprehensive security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations. CM Mohan Charan Majhi and cabinet ministers extended their greetings to the Muslim community on the occasion. The festival passed off peacefully with no untoward incident reported from any part of the state.

Vijayawada marks Bakrid with prayers, festive spirit
1 2 Vijayawada: The city witnessed vibrant celebrations on the occasion of Eid-Al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, as thousands of Muslims gathered at major Eidgahs to offer prayers and participate in rituals with devotion and joy. Large congregations were seen at key prayer locations including the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium, Gymkhana Grounds, and Eidgahs in the old city. At the IGMC Stadium and Yanamalakuduru Eidgah alone, over 3,000 worshippers offered Namaz-e-Eid, marking the spirit of sacrifice and unity. Imams led the special prayers and delivered sermons explaining the significance of Eid-Al-Adha. "Bakrid is a festival that reminds us of the spirit of sacrifice and submission to the will of Allah. One must be willing to let go of worldly attachments and walk the spiritual path," they said. Special duas (prayers) were offered for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the people of Andhra Pradesh and the nation. After prayers, Muslims embraced each other, exchanged greetings of "Eid Mubarak," and proceeded to perform the ritual of animal sacrifice, a key tradition of the festival. Families sacrificed goats and sheep as a symbol of devotion, sharing the meat with relatives, friends, and the poor. Voluntary organizations also stepped in to support underprivileged worshippers by distributing essentials such as rice, dal, and ghee after the prayers. Chief minister N.
