Chelsea stunningly routs PSG in final to win FIFA Club World Cup

New York Post2 days ago
Blue is the color, football is the game, and now Chelsea can add FIFA Club World Cup champion to their name.
Chelsea stunned European champion Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final in a 3-0 victory, capping the first year of the newly formatted tournament in front of a crowd of 81,118 at MetLife Stadium.
The largely pro-Chelsea crowd erupted when the game ended and the club's signature 'Blue is the Colour' song blared throughout the stadium.

The surprise victory came amid a dominant run by PSG during the length of the tournament, which included wins over Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid as they paved their way to the final. But it was the foot of star Cole Palmer that gave Chelsea the lead and breakout star João Pedro who scored his third goal of the tournament to put the game away before the first half even came to an end.
Palmer came within inches of scoring in the eighth minute when his shot sailed just to the right of the post, but redeemed himself with an impressive goal in the 22nd minute, finessing the ball past PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the corner of the net.
In the 30th minute, the Chelsea star received a good lead pass and then showed off why he's one of the club's best players, moving the ball to the top of the box to score in the same spot as his first goal.

Pedro extended the Chelsea lead to three when he chipped the ball past Donnarumma from in front of the net after Palmer helped set up the play with a crisp pass up to Pedro in the box.
By the time the halftime whistle sounded, the already raucous Chelsea fans were ecstatic, chanting and partying inside the MetLife Stadium concourse while an American-style halftime show took place, which included J Balvin, Doja Cat and a surprise appearance by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

The Club World Cup showdown marked the first competitive match between Chelsea and PSG since 2016 and prior to Sunday's win, Chelsea had been victorious only two other times against the French powerhouse in the 10 matches the two clubs have played against one another.

The match featured plenty of chippiness as PSG midfielder João Neves was given a red card for pulling the hair of Chelsea's Marc Cucurella in the second half.
After the game, a brief shoving match occurred and several players had to be separated before the trophy ceremony.

The newly revamped tournament ended in a way that FIFA had to have liked, with a lively atmosphere for most of the afternoon and a star-studded guest list of VIPs in the stands that included President Donald Trump.

Now the full focus turns to the 2026 World Cup that is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, with the global event ending nearly a year from Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
One of the lasting takeaways from the Club World Cup that could impact the operations of next year's World Cup was how hot things can be on matchdays. Sunday's final was played in temperatures in the high 80s and matches earlier in the tournament had been played in 90-degree temps.
'Every criticism we receive is a source for us to study and analyse what can do better,' Infantino told reporters the day before the Club World Cup final. 'Of course the heat is an issue. Last year, at the Olympic Games in Paris, games during the day, in all sports, took place in very hot conditions. Cooling breaks are very important and we will see what we can do, but we have stadiums with roofs and we will definitely use these stadiums during the day next year.'

Felix closing in on Benfica return, Badiashile set to remain at Chelsea

Felix closing in on Benfica return, Badiashile set to remain at Chelsea Benfica are continuing their negotiations with Chelsea to sign forward Joao Felix this summer, according to A Bola. Felix's agent Jorge Mendes is set to meet with Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali to broker a deal for the Portuguese's return to Benfica. Advertisement The 25-year-old's struggles continued after enduring a disappointing loan spell at AC Milan last season, with the Italian giants eventually opting against his permanent transfer. The Blues want to sort out Felix's situation quickly, as he is not in manager Enzo Mareca's plans. His former club Benfica have been keen on offering him an escape route, but had a €20 million bid turned down by the Premier League giants. Chelsea are demanding around €40 million, while the former Atletico Madrid star needs to reduce his salary demands for a deal to materialise. Felix is keen on a return to Benfica as he hopes to revitalise his flagging career. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, he is looking for prominent game time to keep his chances alive in securing a place in Portugal's squad. Advertisement Meanwhile, Benoit Badiashile has put an end to speculation over his future by stating that he will continue at Stamford Bridge this season. Badiashile was linked with a move to Marseille in the transfer window following a lacklustre 2024/25 campaign, plagued by injuries and a lack of game time. But Badiashile has said that he has manager Enzo Maresca's backing to find his stride and play a significant role in the squad. The newly-crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions have signed Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro in the summer window.

Stellan Skarsgård Took Pay Cut For Crew To Get Lunch

Stellan Skarsgård is opening up about accepting a lower salary on the set of his new movie, Sentimental Value. As well as taking a pay cut, Stellan said he became an executive producer because he wanted to ensure that the crew received good lunches on set. 'I wasn't supposed to be [an executive producer] at first, but I said I'd never film in Norway without having a special contract,' he explained at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, per Variety. Stellan then claimed that after a negative experience shooting Erik Skjoldbjærg's Insomnia (1997), he vowed never to film in Norway again unless good lunches were provided. 'I lost eight kilos on Insomnia. We would usually get a loaf of bread, that's pre-sliced, and a plastic salami. That's it!' Stellan claimed. 'I've made other films in Norway since then, but it has always said in my contract that everybody should get lunches of the highest European standard. And that's expensive. Norway, they're the richest country, but they don't want to spend money on food.' 'I went down, I think, half a million kroner in my salary to pay for this, for the food for everybody,' he continued. 'And the producer said, 'You'll get credit for that.' Also, the food has to be served on real china – no plastic, paper bags or whatever. And you're not standing in line, you sit down and eat. It makes everybody happier and makes the film much better. I haven't made one bad film in Norway since.' Stellan isn't the only actor who has accepted a pay cut for the benefit of others. Will Smith, for example, paid the King Richard cast bonuses out of his own pocket in 2021 after WarnerMedia chose to release the film on streaming services and in theaters simultaneously, resulting in a loss of theatrical returns. Keanu Reeves once reportedly gave the visual effects crew of The Matrix a 'very hefty bonus' to ensure that they were fairly compensated for their hard work. Back in 2017, it was reported that the original five stars of The Big Bang Theory — Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, and Simon Helberg — all agreed to $100,000 per episode pay cuts to allow their costars Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch to receive higher salaries. Meanwhile, the screenwriters behind Deadpool (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) once claimed that Ryan Reynolds paid for them to be on set during filming because the studio refused to. Stories like these absolutely restore my faith in Hollywood. If you can think of more examples, let me know in the comments.

Trump considers changing US 'soccer' to 'football' in hosting World Cup

Trump, a former U.S. football team owner, has already ordered the government to make other name changes, including calling the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is talking about putting his foot down. While watching the FIFA Club World Cup final match July 13, he told streaming channel DAZN TV he was considering issuing an executive order to change the name of the sport in the U.S. from 'soccer' to 'football,' as it called around the rest of the world. 'I think we can do that, I think I could do that,' Trump said with a laugh for the interview published July 14. 'They call it 'football,' but I guess we call it 'soccer,' but that change could be made very easily," Trump addd. "But it's great to watch.' Trump is no stranger to name changes, having already ordered the government to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and then pressured private mapmakers to follow suit. The sport is widely called football in Europe and much of the world, while the U.S., Canada and Australia refer to the came as call it soccer. Pointedly calling the sport soccer has long been a prominent symbol of defiance for American national teams and their supporters. Christian Pulisic, one of the national team's star attackers, celebrated in a handmade "it's called soccer" undershirt after scoring against Mexico in a 2022 World Cup qualifying match. Trump, a former owner of the New Jersey Generals in the U.S. Football League in the 1980s, has promoted the sport that might formerly be known as soccer because the U.S. will co-host the World Cup with Mexico and Canada next year. The championship will be played in the same place, New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, where Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0. Trump was seated at the game next to Gianni Infantino, the president of the Federation Internationale de Football Association. Fans booed Trump when appeared briefly on the jumbotron during the national anthem and when he posed with match referees during the trophy ceremony. Trump handed Chelsea their trophy and stood in the middle of the players for their team photo and celebration. "I knew he was going to be there but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy so I was a bit confused," said Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer, who scored two goals during the match.
