Ramli sworn in as the ninth governor of Penang
GEORGE TOWN: Tun Ramli Ngah Talib took his oath of office as the ninth Yang di-Pertua Negri Pulau Pinang during the swearing-in ceremony at Dewan Sri Pinang here.
Ramli, 84, succeeded Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who had served as the eighth Penang governor since 2021.
The new governor took his oath yesterday, witnessed by Penang High Court judge Datuk Rozana Ali Yusoff and State Secretary Datuk Zulkifli Long.
Ramli arrived at Dewan Sri Pinang at 8.30am yesterday, accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah.
He then inspected the guard of honour mounted by the Second Battalion of the Malay Regiment, comprising three officers and 103 soldiers led by Mejar Mohd Salleh Jamal, before entering the ceremonial hall to take his oath of office and to sign the official document, accompanied by a 17-gun salute.
Ramli was also conferred the state award Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN), which carries the title of Datuk Seri Utama, presented by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Also present at the swearing-in ceremony were Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid, Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo and other dignitaries.
In his congratulations and loyalty speech, Chow described Ramli's appointment as a great honour for Penangites.
'He has an outstanding record of service, including having led the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan as Mentri Besar for nearly 17 years and contributing his dedicated service at the federal level as the Dewan Rakyat Speaker for more than three years,' he said.

Chow said Ramli's character and leadership reflect the stature of a true statesman and a distinguished and respected figure in the annals of the nation's governance.
He said he is confident that under Ramli's leadership, Penang will continue to shine and be guided by new inspiration and spirit towards a more glorious, prosperous and harmonious future.
Ramli received his letter of appointment from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, in a ceremony at Istana Negara on April 24.
At the ceremony, he was also conferred the award of Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN), which carries the title of Tun.
Ramli will serve as the Penang Governor for a term of four years, until April 30, 2029.
Born on March 16, 1941, in Pasir Salak, Perak, he was also the Deputy Transport Minister from 2000 to 2004.

Zahid: Amendments to Aboriginal Peoples Act by year's end
PUTRAJAYA: The amendments to the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 aimed at restoring the rights of the Orang Asli will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat by the end of this year. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this follows engagement sessions conducted by the Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) with the relevant stakeholders. "We want the struggles of Orang Asli activists not only to be acknowledged and addressed, but we want to recognise the aspirations of the new generation of Orang Asli. "This is especially important for those who have pursued higher education up to the doctoral level, as they view the rights of the Orang Asli as something that must be restored and further strengthened," he said. Zahid said this to reporters after the One-Year Retreat Session after the 2024 Bumiputera Economic Congress. Last year, Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor had said an amendment to the Federal Constitution concerning the interests of the Orang Asli was expected to be tabled by 2027 at the latest. Ramli, who is Cameron Highlands member of parliament, had said the constitutional amendments would address two key matters. The proposed changes would clarify that the responsibility for the care of the Orang Asli falls under both federal and state governments, covering areas such as land rights, forestry and community welfare. Ramli, who is the first Orang Asli MP from the peninsula in the country, had also expressed hope that the proposed amendments to the act would receive the required two-thirds majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

Penang state financial performance shows significant decline, say Opposition
GEORGE TOWN: The state government's financial performance recorded a 52% decline in consolidated funds, says Opposition Leader Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff. He cited the Auditor-General's Report from October 2024, which indicated a drastic decline in the state's financial performance. "The revenue account fell 52% in 2023 from 2022, while the consolidated trust account showed a 2.9% decrease. "This comparison is unbalanced, especially when the state government's expenditure increased by 13.9% while state revenue decreased by 0.4% in the same period. "If this situation continues, the state will face a critical cash flow risk. "This could affect the state's financial management and administrative expenses, including the salaries of civil servants," he said during a press conference at the opposition room at the August House on Wednesday (May 21) along Light Street, George Town, Penang. Muhammad Fauzi (PN-Sungai Dua) said the state needs a financial recovery plan for the next five years to address these financial risks promptly and thoroughly. "A review of critical and non-critical expenditures is necessary. "They need to improve their administrative structure and procedures so that the people of Penang do not fall victim to the state's management weaknesses," he said. He emphasised the importance of raising these issues as the opposition to represent the people's voice and prevent them from suffering due to administrative shortcomings. "Penangites deserve a responsible government that knows how to prioritise. The state should not use policies to pressure Penangites and increase charges to boost state revenue," he said. Muhammad Fauzi addressed Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow's plans to raise state revenue through quit rent arrears collection, state land sales, and reviewing various fees and charges. On Tuesday (May 20), Chow outlined strategies to increase state revenue, including selling more state land, collecting an estimated RM6mil in quit rent arrears, and reviewing land title conversion processes, liquor licence fees, entertainment duties, and hotel room fees. 'The state government is also aiming to reduce expenditure, but costs continue to rise each year due to salary realignments, which increase emoluments,' Chow said in reply to a question from Goh Choon Aik (PH-Bukit Tambun) during the state assembly. Other revenue efforts include higher animal treatment fees and revised ornamental plant rental rates at Penang Botanic Gardens.
