IPS officer Ajay Sahni to get his third President's Medal

Lucknow: Senior IPS officer Ajay Kumar Sahni, who led 52 encounters, was on Wednesday named for the President's Medal for Gallantry this year. This is the third President's Medal of his career. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A 2009-batch Uttar Pradesh cadre officer, Sahni is known as an 'encounter specialist' in the police force. He was picked for the award for showing 'exceptional courage' during a high-risk armed operation in Meerut on Republic Day (Jan 26, 2020). The President's Medal citation describes the 2020 Meerut operation as "a do-or-die situation in open combat." It praises Sahni's "rarest among rare" gallantry, leadership, and dedication under direct threat to life. In 2020, Sahni, as SSP Meerut, received information about two armed robbers on a motorcycle committing multiple robberies in Transport Nagar police station limits. When intercepted, the criminals opened fire at police and sped towards the Meerut–Delhi Bypass (NH-58).Sahni, along with the Crime Branch's surveillance team, moved to cut off their escape. The suspects, when cornered, opened fire, injuring station officer Dinesh Kumar and head constable Manoj Kumar. While a bullet nearly struck his chest, Sahni led the counterattack. In the ensuing gunfight, Chand alias Kale, a notorious gangster with a Rs 1 lakh bounty and over 40 cases, was killed. The two cops who were injured were also awarded gallantry medals. In Feb 2020, he led the encounter in Meerut in which Shiv Shakti Naidu — the kingpin of Delhi's notorious Naidu gang, involved in an Rs 8 crore heist and carrying a Rs 1 lakh reward — was fatally wounded. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Naidu was wanted in over a dozen cases in Delhi alone and faced multiple cases across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. In 2021, he was awarded a gallantry medal for this encounter. In 2020, Sahni was awarded for eliminating Sujit Singh alias Budhwa, leader of the D-9 gang and a Rs 50,000 bounty criminal who escaped from Rampur Jail and was hiding in Azamgarh. Sahni is credited with dismantling the entire D-9 gang, one of eastern Uttar Pradesh's most feared criminal syndicates. During his 2016 posting in Siddharthnagar, police, under his leadership, apprehended several members of the infamous Bawaria gang after a fierce gunfight in which a bullet struck his jacket.

Sex racket busted, two women rescued from Dharampeth salon

Nagpur: In a swift crackdown on , Nagpur city police's Social Security Branch (SSB), under 'Operation Shakti,' rescued two women from a flesh trade being operated from a unisex salon in the bustling Dharampeth area on Tuesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The two rescued women were lured into a sex trafficking racket with false promises of financial rewards, said police. They have now been moved to a government shelter for medical care and rehabilitation. The salon, rented around two years ago, was operating from the rooms, converting the parking zone for business purposes, said police. While the prime accused, Deepa Godade (35), was rounded up, the mastermind remained absconding, triggering a citywide manhunt. Godade was the manager of the spa and was instrumental in operating the flesh trade. She is now in custody. The raid, conducted by a team comprising head constables Sameer Shaikh, Prakash Mathankar, Ashwin Bhange, and others, led by Senior Inspector Rahul Shire under the supervision of DCP Rahul Maknikar and Addl CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, exposed the racket operating under the guise of a legitimate spa. Sources stated the cops kept the spa under surveillance for some time with credible information about the ongoing sex racket thriving among top-notch clients. "We sent a police punter earlier in the day, but the spa owners refused to entertain him, leaving our raid unsuccessful. On our second attempt, we managed to crack them as the police informer sneaked inside and laid the trap. As soon as the spa operators accepted the cash, the cops barged in," said a cop who was part of the probe. Police seized Rs 3,000 in cash, an iPhone worth Rs 25,000, a Poco mobile worth Rs 10,000, a DVR valued at Rs 2,000, and a condom packet, totalling Rs 40,000 in confiscated items. "Operation Shakti is our commitment to uproot trafficking networks and protect vulnerable women," said CP Ravinder Singal. The accused face charges under Sections 143(2) (3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956. Investigations suggest links to a broader trafficking syndicate, with further arrests expected.

Fingerprints & CCTV help cops recover 32-inch brass Buddha idol

Nagpur: A burglary at a Buddhist shrine at Vishwas Nagar triggered unrest in the community last week, but the case was cracked with CCTV technology and time-tested fingerprint analysis, apart from clinical human intelligence. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Analysis of fingerprints, a technique relied upon by global sleuths, came to the rescue of Jaripatka police when they were scrambling for clues after analysing footage from 150 CCTV cameras. To evade CCTV surveillance, the burglars moved around in the same area through narrow lanes to confuse cops. But cops managed to nab an accused, Sagar Borkar, 25, for his role in stealing a 32-inch brass Buddha idol. Borkar, who had a rape case against him at Karadi police station, was in desperate need of Rs 1,500 after a tiff with his wife and approached the kingpin, Nitesh Giraokar, for a loan. Giraokar, who has several cases against him, roped in Borkar for the heist. Giraokar is still on the run. The incident occurred between 8:30pm on August 7 and 6:30am on August 8, when the Buddha idol valued at Rs 15,000, and cash of Rs 6,000 from a donation box were stolen. The complainant, Diwakar Raipure, 73, reported the crime after trustee Sushma Bagde discovered the Vihara gate's lock broken and the donation box empty. The police, under the guidance of DCP Niketan Kadam and ACP Satyavan Bandiwar, launched an investigation. Borkar, a resident of Godhani Road, was apprehended after a trap was set up with undercover informants. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and led police to the stolen Buddha idol at a house. The arrested accused were presented before a court, and Borkar was placed in police custody for further investigation. Jaripatka police team, including sub-inspector Maroti Jangilwad and senior inspector Arun Kshirsagar played a key role in busting the case.
