Two dead in 11-rider British Supersport crash at Oulton Park

LONDON: Supersport riders Owen Jenner, 21, and Shane Richardson, 29, died after a crash involving 11 bikes at the start of a race at Oulton Park yesterday, circuit owners Motor Sport Vision (MSV) said.
Tom Tunstall, 47, was in hospital with significant back and abdominal injuries and a further five riders were taken to the medical centre with minor injuries at the circuit in northern England.
The race was stopped immediately after the chain-reaction crash at the exit to turn one on the opening lap, with the British Superbike championship event then cancelled.
MSV said British rider Jenner was treated trackside initially but died from a catastrophic head injury after being taken to the circuit medical centre.
New Zealander Richardson was also treated trackside and then at the medical centre but died with severe chest injuries prior to arrival at Royal Stoke University Hospital.
MSV said it and the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board were investigating along with the coroner and police.

'Palestinian Pelé' Suleiman al-Obeid killed by Israeli forces in Gaza

The PFA described him as 'one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football,' noting that he had scored over 100 goals during his career. By NURSYAHMINA ZAINAL 08 Aug 2025 01:41pm Suleiman al-Obeid, known as the 'Palestinian Pelé. Photo: X. SHAH ALAM - Suleiman al-Obeid, widely known as the 'Palestinian Pelé,' was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA). Obeid leaves behind his wife and five children. He was reportedly among a group of civilians waiting for humanitarian aid when the attack occurred. The PFA described him as 'one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football,' noting that he had scored over 100 goals during his career. A native of Gaza, born on March 24, 1984, Obeid began his career with Khadamat al-Shati and later played for Gaza Sport and the West Bank club Markaz Shabab al-Am'ari. His most iconic goal came in 2010 during a match against Yemen in the West Asian Football Federation Championship. According to the British daily The Guardian, it was this goal that marked his rise and earned him the title 'the Palestinian Pelé,' in tribute to Brazil's football icon. The PFA said his death is one of many losses in the Palestinian sports community since the war began. At least 662 athletes and their family members have been killed, including 421 footballers, with 103 of them being children. Damage to sports infrastructure has also been severe. The PFA reported that 288 sports facilities across Gaza and the West Bank have been destroyed or damaged. This includes stadiums, gyms, clubhouses and even the PFA's own headquarters in Gaza, which was hit in an airstrike. Since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began operations in late May with US and Israeli backing, over 1,300 Palestinians have reportedly died near aid distribution points. More Like This

LONDON: Villarreal have signed Ghana international Thomas Partey on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract with Arsenal, the LaLiga club said yesterday. The 32-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed a season-long deal and will join the Villarreal squad in training on Friday. Partey was charged last month with raping two women while he was a player for the Premier League club. He is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. "The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England. The player vehemently defends his innocence and denies all charges against him," Villarreal said in a statement. "The club respects his presumption of innocence as a fundamental principle and is awaiting the verdict of the courts, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case. In accordance with British law regarding ongoing proceedings, the club will not comment further on this matter." Partey made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020.
