Calcutta HC to hear primary teachers' termination appeals on Apr 28
The Calcutta High Court will on April 28 take up for hearing appeals challenging the termination of around 32,000 jobs of primary teachers.
The matter was mentioned on Monday (April 21, 2025) before a division bench, comprising justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, before which the appeals were assigned by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam after another bench released the matter.

The division bench said that the appeals by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education and others, including some of those who were recruited, challenging the termination of jobs of primary teachers by a single bench, will appear before it on April 28 for hearing.
Releasing the matter from its court on April 7, a division bench comprising justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De directed that the appeals be placed before Chief Justice Sivagnanam for assignment to a different bench.
The division bench cited "personal reason" of Justice Sen for releasing the matter from its list for hearing.
A single bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had on May 12, 2023, ordered the cancellation of the appointment of around 32,000 candidates who had not completed the teachers' training course when they were recruited as primary teachers through a selection process in 2016 on the basis of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2014.
A division bench had later stayed the single bench order terminating the jobs of around 32,000 teachers in West Bengal government-run and aided primary schools.

For Bengal BJP, why the Sharmistha Panoli case was a timely one
Sharmistha Panoli walked out of a Kolkata prison last Friday, a day after the Calcutta High Court granted her interim bail in a case of communal posts. With this, the BJP in Bengal, which took up the case to target the Mamata Banerjee government over alleged police high-handedness and Muslim 'appeasement', claimed victory and Leader of Opposition in the state, Suvendu Adhikari, said justice had been served. Adhikari alleged the police never acted against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, from Mamata Banerjee to Mahua Moitra and Firhad Hakim, who had made 'objectionable remarks' about Hindu deities and festivals, whereas Panoli's comment, which she 'later deleted and apologised for', attracted police action. 'Where is this same zeal when idols of Hindu deities are vandalised in West Bengal? When stone-pelting happens on Ram Navami & Hanuman Jayanti processions…,' he asked. Not just Adhikari, other senior BJP leaders, including Union Minister and state unit president Sukanta Majumdar also came out in Panoli's support, saying, 'The 30% have to be defeated, 30% have to be convinced of the power of traditional Hindus, so let's organise a united voice across your social media, 'I want the liberation of traditional Sharmistha.' #istandwithsharmishtha …' As the top BJP leaders threw their weight behind the 22-year-old, with BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and state BJP legal cell member Sanjukta Samanta filing police complaints against Wajahat Khan, whose complaint had led to the influencer's arrest. Paul alleged that the police were shielding Khan because of 'Muslim appeasement'. A fringe Hindu outfit calling itself the Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad wrote a letter to the Jail Superintendent of Alipore Women's Correctional Home, alleging a threat to the 22-year-old's life and demanding better security arrangements for her. The BJP's pushback was in line with its strategy of painting the TMC as anti-Hindu and claiming that its Muslim appeasement politics is marginalising the majority community in the state. This strategy has been apparent in the party's public positioning since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh last year — the party and the larger rightwing ecosystem drew parallels between the situation in the neighbouring country, where Hindus were reported to have come under attack, and the state. Its allegations gained momentum after the communal violence in Murshidabad in April, following protests against the amended Waqf law, in which three people were killed. And as the Trinamool looked to have weathered the storm — the inauguration of a Jagannath temple in the coastal town of Digha in Purba Medinipur district was a signal to the Hindu voters in the state — came the Panoli case. The TMC's dominance in West Bengal has been fuelled by a combination of factors, including the consolidation of minority votes, the votes of women due to its social welfare initiatives, and the success in painting the BJP as a party of outsiders. It has also been helped by the fact that there has not been a counter-consolidation of Hindu votes behind the BJP and this is something that the Opposition party appears to be trying to change ahead of the all-important Assembly elections next year. The TMC has responded to the BJP, alleging that Panoli had knowingly put up the posts for social media clout and to gain rightwing attention. Party spokesperson Riju Datta said the Kolkata Police had done its duty by 'carrying out the court's warrant' and appealed to the youth and their parents not to get 'influenced by the RW cabal run by BJP IT Cell … they will earn their salary hiding behind a cellphone but your children's lives will be spoiled forever'. KMC 2nd inspection of La Martiniere today
Kolkata: A KMC team, following directions from the Calcutta High Court, will conduct an inspection of the heritage buildings at the twin La Martiniere schools on Sunday. This is HC's second inspection directive to the KMC. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The earlier civic team that had inspected the school on June 2 comprised two KMC executive engineers, a representative of the West Bengal Heritage Commission and a representative from the three petitioners. During the hearing on Thursday, the West Bengal Heritage Commission, in its report, said repairs were required in the schools and the KMC needed to grant permission for it. The counsel for the KMC, Alak Ghosh, submitted before the vacation bench of Justice Ravi Krishan Kapur and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya that the school authorities already demolished what constituted the dignity of the heritage structure set up way back in 1832. The building appears in the KMC Heritage Building List as a Grade I heritage structure. But the KMC counsel admitted it conducted inspections in a "few selected rooms and not the entirety of the buildings". Chastising the KMC for its "casual and cavalier attitude", the vacation bench directed the civic authorities to conduct a further investigation of the damage at the heritage buildings and ascertain the urgency of the repairs. The bench directed the KMC to reach La Martiniere School for further inspection between noon and 3 pm on Sunday. While the matter will be taken up by the regular bench on June 10, the vacation bench reiterated "if the urgency of the situation so requires, the KMC and the heritage commission shall take necessary steps in accordance with law and won't wait for any order of court".
