Calcutta HC to hear primary teachers' termination appeals on Apr 28
The Calcutta High Court will on April 28 take up for hearing appeals challenging the termination of around 32,000 jobs of primary teachers.
The matter was mentioned on Monday (April 21, 2025) before a division bench, comprising justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, before which the appeals were assigned by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam after another bench released the matter.

The division bench said that the appeals by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education and others, including some of those who were recruited, challenging the termination of jobs of primary teachers by a single bench, will appear before it on April 28 for hearing.
Releasing the matter from its court on April 7, a division bench comprising justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De directed that the appeals be placed before Chief Justice Sivagnanam for assignment to a different bench.
The division bench cited "personal reason" of Justice Sen for releasing the matter from its list for hearing.
A single bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had on May 12, 2023, ordered the cancellation of the appointment of around 32,000 candidates who had not completed the teachers' training course when they were recruited as primary teachers through a selection process in 2016 on the basis of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2014.
A division bench had later stayed the single bench order terminating the jobs of around 32,000 teachers in West Bengal government-run and aided primary schools.

KMC 2nd inspection of La Martiniere today
Kolkata: A KMC team, following directions from the Calcutta High Court, will conduct an inspection of the heritage buildings at the twin La Martiniere schools on Sunday. During the hearing on Thursday, the West Bengal Heritage Commission, in its report, said repairs were required in the schools and the KMC needed to grant permission for it. The counsel for the KMC, Alak Ghosh, submitted before the vacation bench of Justice Ravi Krishan Kapur and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya that the school authorities already demolished what constituted the dignity of the heritage structure set up way back in 1832. The building appears in the KMC Heritage Building List as a Grade I heritage structure. But the KMC counsel admitted it conducted inspections in a "few selected rooms and not the entirety of the buildings". Chastising the KMC for its "casual and cavalier attitude", the vacation bench directed the civic authorities to conduct a further investigation of the damage at the heritage buildings and ascertain the urgency of the repairs. The bench directed the KMC to reach La Martiniere School for further inspection between noon and 3 pm on Sunday. While the matter will be taken up by the regular bench on June 10, the vacation bench reiterated "if the urgency of the situation so requires, the KMC and the heritage commission shall take necessary steps in accordance with law and won't wait for any order of court".

Murshidabad communal violence: 13 named in chargesheet for murder of father, son
The West Bengal Police have named 13 people on their chargesheet in connection with the father-son double murder case during West Bengal's anti-Waqf law protests in April this year, a police official Das, 74, and his son Chandan Das, 40, were hacked to death in the communal violence that broke out in Murshidabad district.
