Calcutta HC to hear primary teachers' termination appeals on Apr 28
The matter was mentioned on Monday (April 21, 2025) before a division bench, comprising justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, before which the appeals were assigned by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam after another bench released the matter.

The division bench said that the appeals by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education and others, including some of those who were recruited, challenging the termination of jobs of primary teachers by a single bench, will appear before it on April 28 for hearing.
Releasing the matter from its court on April 7, a division bench comprising justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De directed that the appeals be placed before Chief Justice Sivagnanam for assignment to a different bench.
The division bench cited "personal reason" of Justice Sen for releasing the matter from its list for hearing.
A single bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had on May 12, 2023, ordered the cancellation of the appointment of around 32,000 candidates who had not completed the teachers' training course when they were recruited as primary teachers through a selection process in 2016 on the basis of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2014.
A division bench had later stayed the single bench order terminating the jobs of around 32,000 teachers in West Bengal government-run and aided primary schools.

Vivek Agnihotri alleges trailer launch of ‘The Bengal Files' ‘stopped' by Kolkata Police
The Kolkata Police on Saturday (August 16, 2025) stopped the trailer launch of 'The Bengal Files', its director Vivek Agnihotri claimed. The trailer of the film was slated to be screened at a five-star hotel in the metropolis in the afternoon. Police personnel present at the venue refused to comment on the issue. Mr. Agnihotri, however, alleged that it was an attack on the democratic rights of people, as the censor board had cleared the film and 'the Calcutta High Court stayed a ban on it'. The screening of the trailer was first stopped by a representative of the hotel around 1 p.m., who said that permission had been granted for only a press conference, he said. As the trailer was shown again a little later, 'suddenly five-six Kolkata Police officers entered the banquet hall where the programme was being held and stopped the screening midway,' the director claimed. The filmmaker was also seen engaged in a heated argument with the police personnel and a hotel staff. Mr. Agnihotri alleged that the screening was stopped at the behest of the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and that her party leaders also threatened the hotel management to halt the trailer midway. Addressing reporters, Mr. Agnihotri asserted that 'The Bengal Files', 'which is based on facts and has passed the censor hurdle', is being prevented from screening by 'the person who is at the helm of the administration in Bengal'. Asked if he meant Ms. Banerjee, he said, "Yes, you are right." "There can be only one reason behind such a move, to ignore the conspiracy to divide Bengal again. I wish to believe this government is not anti-Hindu," Mr. Agnihotri said. 'The Bengal Files' delves into the communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s. Schools told to re-upload staff documents after Shalarth scam
In the wake of the Shalarth ID scam in Maharashtra, all government and aided schools across the state have been directed to re-upload original documents of teaching and non-teaching staff appointed between November 2012 and July 2025 for verification. Schools have been told to complete the process by the end of August. Commissioner of Education Sachindra Pratap Singh has issued a letter to all education officers instructing them to oversee and complete the verification drive. Local officers are to ensure schools upload all required documents, which will be verified along with the staff members' Shalarth ID. The scam, which came to light in Nagpur division, exposed major irregularities in teacher recruitment. Investigations revealed the use of fake Shalarth IDs and bogus TET certificates to fraudulently approve and pay non-existent staff. In response, the state government has recently formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Simultaneously the education department has expanded the verification drive to all divisions. As per the official letter, for staff appointed between November 2016 and July 2025, schools must upload the individual approval order, Shalarth ID order, appointment letter from the private management, and joining report. For the earlier period, from November 2012 to November 2016—when Shalarth IDs were not issued—schools must upload the appointment letter, joining report, and individual approval. However, the directive has sparked criticism from schools and staff. Many argue the process is an unnecessary burden on schools which have already done this process at the time of recruitment. Mahendra Ganpule of the Maharashtra School Principals' Association said, 'All these documents are already with the education offices and salary units. Instead of asking schools to repeat the process, the department should verify existing records and demand original documents for suspected entries.' The Shalarth ID is a unique identity for teachers in government and aided school staff in Maharashtra through which employment records are maintained and disbursement of salary and other benefits is ensured. Unravelling of the scam had shown that multiple fake IDs were created on the government's salary portal for teaching and non-teaching staff in government and aided schools to disburse salaries to fake teachers. While there have been few arrests by Nagpur police in this case, the state-formed SIT arrested the alleged mastermind of the scam, Nilesh Waghmare, earlier this week.
