Credit cards race: Citi launches Strata Elite to rival AmEx Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve with $595 fee and travel perks

Time of India27-07-2025
Citigroup has entered the competitive luxury credit card market with the launch of its new Strata Elite Card, aiming to lure premium customers away from rivals like American Express' Platinum Card and JPMorgan Chase's Sapphire Reserve.
The Strata Elite, launched at an annual fee of $595, undercuts the Platinum and Sapphire Reserve cards, which charge $695 and $795 respectively. It offers high rewards on travel-related spending—multiples on air travel, car rentals, hotels, and dining—as well as everyday purchases. Customers will also receive a $300 hotel credit and a $200 'splurge' credit for select brands like Best Buy and Live Nation, AP reported.
This card becomes the highest tier in Citi's new three-part Strata lineup, which includes the base Strata Card and mid-range Strata Premier. The launch marks Citi's return to the ultra-premium card segment after its Citi Prestige card was pulled from the market in 2021, following stiff competition from AmEx and Chase.
While Citi Prestige was once a favourite among travel rewards enthusiasts, it lost ground after Chase's Sapphire Reserve debuted in 2016, followed by enhancements to AmEx Platinum.

Citi stopped accepting new applications for Prestige in 2021, though benefits remain for existing cardholders.
The Strata Elite now enters a crowded field that includes Capital One's Venture X and an upcoming high-end card from startup Bilt. As competition heats up, players are expanding rewards and travel credits, hoping to justify steep annual fees that can exceed $1,000 for users carrying multiple cards.
Citi is also bolstering its travel infrastructure. Customers booking through Citi's in-house travel portal will earn 12X points under the 'Thank You' rewards programme—an aggressive move aligned with strategies by AmEx, Chase, and Capital One, who are also directing users to their proprietary booking platforms rather than third-party sites like Expedia.

GST reforms incoming! PM Modi promises ‘double Diwali' 'next-generation' tax regime: Details here

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his 79th Independence Day address on Friday from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort, promised a 'double Diwali' this year. He announced major reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and a reduction in tax rates by October. Vowing to reform and lower tax rates by Diwali, PM Modi said, 'This Diwali, I am going to make it a double Diwali for you. Over the past eight years, we have undertaken a major reform in GST." "We are bringing next-generation GST reforms. This will reduce the tax burden across the country, ' DD News quoted the PM as saying during his Independence Day speech. With the major Hindu festival of lights - Diwali just a few months away - this announcement comes as the government prepares to simplify the GST structure. From merging tax slabs to lowering rates on some products, the government has previously expressed its intent to reduce the number of tax brackets and revise GST rates. Currently, the effective GST rates are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% on most goods and services, excluding gold and silver. On demerit items such as cigarettes and high-end cars, the government applies additional taxes. According to the brokerage Citi, around 20% of items - including packaged food and beverages, apparel and hotel accommodation - fall under the 12% GST slab, accounting for 5-10% of consumption and 5-6% of GST revenue. 'If most of these are moved to the 5% slab and some to the 18% slab, it could lead to a revenue loss of around 500 billion rupees, or 0.15% of GDP, potentially taking the total policy stimulus for households in the current 2025-26 financial year to 0.6%-0.7% of GDP, ' Citi noted. Before heading to the Red Fort for his 12th address, PM Modi greeted the nation through a social media post on X.

Kalyan Jewellers Shares Fall 13% From Day's High Despite Strong Q1 Results: What Brokerage Firms Say?

Kalyan Jewellers reports robust revenue growth of 31% YoY, led by 18% SSSG growth in India. Shares of Kalyan Jewellers India Ltd, the Thrissur-headquartered jewellery company, tumbled nearly 9% on Friday, August 8, despite registering gains in three of the past four trading sessions. The stock opened higher at Rs 615.65 but soon reversed course to hit an intraday low of Rs 535, which is 9.46% lower than the previous close of Rs 590.95 and 13.14% down from the day's high of Rs 616. Global brokerage Citi has reiterated its 'Buy' rating on the stock and raised its price target to Rs 700, citing solid financial performance. Revenue rose 31% year-on-year, with same-store sales growth in India at 18%, in line with expectations. More notably, EBITDA and PBT surged 35% and 49% YoY, respectively — exceeding Citi's estimates by 9% and 14% — aided by improved operating leverage, a pilot project, and higher platinum and silver sales. In addition, the company is: 'We have started off the ongoing quarter well despite continuing volatility in gold prices and a higher base. We are upbeat about the upcoming festive season across the country and are gearing up for the launch of fresh collections and campaigns," said Ramesh Kalyanaraman, Executive Director, Kalyan Jewellers India. Of the nine analysts covering the stock, eight have a 'Buy' rating, while one has a 'Sell' recommendation. Brokerage JM Financial also gave a 'buy' call for the shares with a price target of Rs 700. In its note, the brokerage said, 'Kalyan reported robust revenue growth of 31% YoY, led by 18% SSSG growth in India. It added 10/1 Kalyan store in India/US and 8 Candere stores. India EBITDA was 10% above our estimates led by robust gross margins as (i) company implemented a pilot project of lean credit period to its vendors which resulted in higher margins/better RoCE and, (ii) inventory gains due to increase in prices of silver/platinum. Company is planning to launch new regional brands for every state to target the customers with regional taste and capture the pie from unorganised segment; 1st brand will be launched in CY25. It has temporarily paused the repayment of its debt obligation until release of its real estate collateral. Demand in Q2 remained until last week of June, post which the high base is optically leading to some YoY slowdown in growth, with growth again expected to pick in Q2 due to the festive season." Its steps towards lean credit policy is expected to drive profitability and improve RoCE, while the regional brand strategy is aimed at increasing the TAM; however, this would also lead an increase in the overall capital employed in the business. We largely maintain our EPS estimates as benefits of better margins gets negated by higher interest cost required for working capital requirement for the new pilot. Maintain BUY rating on the stock with an unchanged target price of INR 700, based on 45x June'27 EPS, JM Financial stated. JPMorgan denied it closed account linked to former Kansas governor on religious grounds, letter shows

NEW YORK, Aug 7 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase denied it closed an account linked to former Kansas Governor Sam Brownback on religious grounds, and did not receive information it requested from him before shutting the account, according to a letter seen by Reuters. Brownback, a Republican who chairs the National Committee for Religious Freedom, claims the bank canceled the group's new account on religious grounds in 2022. He also alleged Chase shuns conservatives and religious groups. President Donald Trump has accused the nation's biggest lenders of discriminating against him and his conservative supporters by denying them banking services, a practice known as "debanking." "We don't discontinue client relationships because of a religious or political affiliation, and we didn't with your account," wrote Larry Thode, a managing director at Chase, in a letter in October 2022. The contents of the letter have not been previously reported. "The information your organization gave to us at account opening triggered our request for additional information. That had nothing to do with any religious affiliation." The bank did not obtain the information before the account was closed because its bankers were not able to connect with Brownback's staff in a timely manner, it said. "We apologize for that," Thode wrote. A spokesman for Brownback said the letter was the first time Chase had discussed regulations including the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering regulations as a cause for the account being canceled. "They still didn't address why our account was closed just three weeks after opening." Thode did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. The White House declined to comment on Brownback's case. (Reporting by Nupur Anand in New York, editing by Lananh Nguyen and Chris Reese)
