Daron Payne focused on winning, not money
Daron Payne wants to be one of the main reasons.
The former Alabama defensive tackle has been a Redskin/Commander since being drafted in the first round (13 overall) by Washington in 2018. Yet, not until 2024 did Payne enjoy a winning season in the NFL. That's right, Washington had not had a winning record since the 2015 and 2016 seasons when Kirk Cousins was the starting quarterback. Last season, the Commanders turned everything around in Washington, shocking the NFL world by winning 12 regular-season games and two road playoff games.
"Man, we were in a good place last year, and I want to be one of the reasons we get to the Super Bowl," Payne told Scott Abraham on Tuesday, following practice. It's important to Payne, seeing all of those seasons without a winning record. Payne certainly realizes success is not going to be automatic in 2025, simply because there was success in 2024 for the Commanders.
While Terry McLaurin's contract drama dominates the headlines for the Commanders, money is not an issue for Payne. Abraham mentioned to Payne on Tuesday that this is Payne's final contract year. Payne responded, "I'm just playing ball. Right now, I'm at the point in my career where I am just having fun. Everything I do is fun to me, like working hard, being out here in the sun, playing with these guys, it is fun."
It's worth noting that Payne actually has two more seasons remaining on the contract he signed in 2023.
Abraham noted that, being a contract year, players may view the year differently. Payne expressed, "Yeah man, I got all the money I want. So, I'm really just (pause)..." Payne then talked of how last year was a special year.
This will be the first NFL season for Payne without former Alabama and Washington teammate Jonathan Allen. In 2022, Payne enjoyed a career-high 11.5 quarterback sacks in his contract year. Other career highs that season were his 64 total tackles (32 solo, 32 assists) and 18 tackles for loss and 20 quarterback hits.
Payne has been extremely reliable, missing only one game in his seven NFL seasons. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds, Payne turned age 28 in May.

FA guard Dalton Risner could visit Steelers before making decision on contract
Free agent guard and former second-round pick Dalton Risner is preparing to sign with a team ahead of the start of the 2025 regular season. According to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Risner has visited with the Cincinnati Bengals, will meet with the Seattle Seahawks, and, according to Fowler, could visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers as well before making a decision. Risner is a talented interior offensive lineman with tremendous experience. Risner is in his seventh NFL season and, after spending his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos and the next two with the Seattle Seahawks, has 81 career starts in 87 games. If Risner is considering the Steelers and the Steelers are interested in Risner, it would be because Isaac Seumalo's injury is worse than being reported. Seumalo did some work at practice on Tuesday but has been out for much of training camp with what has been reported as a back injury. Pittsburgh has been shuffling interior offensive line depth in hopes of putting together a solid depth chart. Right now, if Seumalo can't go in Week One of the regular season, it would come down to Max Scharping or Andrus Peat to get the start. Steelers in 'consideration' for standout free agent visit, per report
Steelers fans rejoice, one of the best free agent offensive linemen may be on his way to Pittsburgh. On Tuesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that G Dalton Risner, who just finished a workout for the Bengals, is considering the Steelers for a potential visit as he decides on his future landing spot. "Free agent guard Dalton Risner, who worked out for the Bengals today, will also visit the Seahawks, per source. Visiting the Steelers also a consideration," Fowler wrote on X. "Wants to take multiple visits before making a decision." Selected by the Broncos with the 41st overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Risner wasted little time making an impact and was named to the PFWA NFL All-Rookie Team in his debut season — which featured a talented ensemble of players such as DE Nick Bosa, DT Dexter Lawrence, RB Josh Jacobs, and more. Risner has 81 games of starting experience from his time with the Broncos and Vikings. At best, he would challenge the Steelers' guards for a starting spot — and at worst, he'd serve as arguably one of the league's best backups. Steelers 53-man roster prediction after the second preseason game
The Pittsburgh Steelers are down to only one preseason game left to sort out the 53-man roster. On Saturday, the Steelers lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-14 and the team didn't perform well in any phase compared to the first preseason game.
