30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Rome Odunze (No. 5)

Yahoo5 days ago
The Chicago Bears are gearing up for an exciting 2025 NFL season, which features some new faces within the organization poised to get the franchise back to its winning ways. That starts with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach, as well as overhauling the interior offensive line, adding pieces on defense and a potenital impactful rookie draft class.
Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year.
Next up at No. 5 is wide receiver Rome Odunze, who's poised for a breakout year after a modest rookie season as the third wideout in a dysfunctional offense.
Background
Position: Wide receiver
Age: 23
Experience: 2nd season
2025 cap hit: $5.16 million
2024 recap
The Bears drafted Odunze just eight spots after Caleb Williams in the 2025 NFL draft, and it was clear the franchise has high hopes for both top-10 picks. Odunze was the third wide receiver selected, but he didn't a breakout season like Malik Nabers of the New York Giants or Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Still, Odunze had a respectable rookie season with 54 receptions for 734 yards and three touchdowns despite being the third receiver behind veterans DJ Moore and Keenan Allen and in a dysfunctional offense marred by coaching ineptitude and poor offensive line play. He played the second-most snaps among Bears receivers and eclipsed 100 targets (101) on the season. Odunze had just two games with 100-plus receiving yards, but he showed a ton of potential -- including his chemistry with Williams -- in an expanded role in an improved offense.
2025 outlook
With Keenan Allen departing in free agency, Odunze is set to take on an expanded role as the second receiver behind DJ Moore. And with the arrival of new head coach Ben Johnson, Odunze is poised to be one of the biggest beneficiaries. He should benefit from the coaching additions of Johnson and receivers coach Antwaan Randle-El, as well as continuing to build his chemistry with Caleb Williams. Chicago used a premium draft selection on Odunze with the belief that he can develop into a playmaker for this offense for years to come -- and serve as a dynamic duo with quarterback Caleb Williams. Perhaps Odunze fills the Amon-Ra St. Brown role in this Ben Johnson offense. And there are some who believe Odunze could even pass up Moore as WR1 at some point this season.
Big question: Will Odunze have a breakout year under Ben Johnson?
Throughout the offseason, many NFL analysts have pegged Odunze as a breakout contender for the 2025 season. And it's easy to see why. Odunze flashed potential as the third receiver in a struggling offense. Now, he gets one of the NFL's best offensive minds in Ben Johnson to lead the way. Odunze was underutilized as a rookie, and Johnson is exactly the guy to maximize the young wideout's skillset. While there are a number of weapons on this roster and just one ball to go around, Odunze should wind up being a top target for Caleb Williams as the young duo continues to build their chemistry. The Bears brought Johnson to Chicago to revive this team -- and the offense -- and there's no one better to get the most out of Odunze than Johnson and receivers coach/assistant head coach Antwaan Randle-El.

Lukaku names Conte among four coaches who ‘changed his life'

Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku believes that Antonio Conte is one of the four head coaches who has 'changed my life', and has explained what makes him such an effective centre-forward when working under the former Juventus, Italy and Inter boss. Twice now have Conte and Lukaku won the Serie A title while working together: Once at Inter and once at Napoli in the season just gone. There had been rumours a long way back that Conte had tried to bring the Belgian to Chelsea as a replacement for Diego Costa in 2017 as well. 'We have the same mentality: Improvement only comes with hard work,' Lukaku said about his relationship with Conte in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, published on Thursday. epa11834999 Napolis Romelu Lukaku shakes hands with his coach Antonio Conte during the Italian Serie A soccer match between Atalanta BC and SSC Napoli in Bergamo, Italy, 18 January 2025. EPA-EFE/MICHELE MARAVIGLIA 'He has a footballing idea that suits my characteristics, and when I'm at home, I try to learn the concepts of the game that he wants. Our relationship has always worked because he knows how to give me those motivations to try and be the strongest every day.' The four most-important coaches of Lukaku's career Lukaku feels that Conte is one of the four coaches that have had the most impact on his career thus far, in a list that also includes bosses from his time with the Belgium national team, Everton and Anderlecht. When asked if Conte is a bit like a 'footballing father', Lukaku told Gazzetta: 'Yes, just like Roberto Martinez was in Belgium, Koeman at Everton and Ariel Jacobs at Anderlecht.' Lukaku went on to explain to Gazzetta how he has developed as a player between his spells with Inter and Napoli, and what he thinks makes him a better player now than he was back then. 'I'm more experienced, for sure. And I do a lot of tactical work at home. I watch the opposition teams, I have more control of the things that happen on the pitch and I spot things before they happen. Before, I was more reactive. 'People say that the body changes, but even now, in every game, there are two or three plays where I can make a difference starting further back. But I'm more selfless these days. The assists say so. When I first came to Italy, I looked out for myself more so.'

Trent Alexander-Arnold heaps praise on Sadio Mané

Trent Alexander-Arnold & Sadio Mané Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a striking tribute to Sadio Mané during the podcast hosted by Gary Neville. The English defender revealed that his former Liverpool teammate was the only player he had the privilege of playing alongside without ever having to face him as an opponent. The England international did not hide his admiration for Mané's exceptional qualities. He highlighted that the left winger, in his view, embodied the archetype of the perfect modern forward. Alexander-Arnold emphasized the remarkable technical versatility of his former Anfield training partner. The right-back's comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo underscores the level of excellence attributed to the Senegalese star. "He was a perfect forward. He had everything. He was an athlete. I would probably say he was similar to (Cristiano) Ronaldo. He was fast, powerful, could score with both feet. He was a constant threat to everyone," said Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Leicester: Wilfred Ndidi undergoing medical this Thursday at Besiktas

After several years at Leicester, the Nigerian midfielder is set to continue his career in Turkey. Leicester: Wilfred Ndidi undergoing medical this Thursday at Besiktas Wilfred Ndidi is undergoing his medical this Thursday, August 7, 2025, in Istanbul with Besiktas. The Nigerian defensive midfielder is leaving Leicester City to join the Turkish club in a permanent transfer worth €9.5 million. An agreement between the two clubs was reached earlier this week. The 28-year-old is about to start a new chapter in his career after eight seasons in England. The Super Eagles defensive midfielder landed in Turkey today to finalize his move to Besiktas. The Black Eagles' management triggered a release clause in the player's contract to seal a deal that had been dragging on for several weeks. The Nigerian international, who has 62 caps, is set to sign a three-year contract with an option for a fourth season. This signing marks a major investment for Besiktas, who are counting on Ndidi's European experience to bolster their midfield. A product of KRC Genk, Ndidi joined Leicester in January 2017 and became one of the team's key pillars.
