Man arrested after hours-long search in Poulsbo, WA charged with murder
The Brief
Laird Dinsmore, 35, is charged with first-degree murder and assault for allegedly killing James Foster in Poulsbo, WA.
Dinsmore reportedly confessed to shooting Foster and firing at SWAT officers during his arrest.
The motive remains unknown, but Dinsmore allegedly stole items from the property where Foster was working.
POULSBO, Wash. - Kitsap County prosecutors have charged a man who was arrested after an hours-long search with first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree assault.
Laird Dinsmore, 35, is accused of killing 50-year-old James Foster outside a home on Big Valley Road Northeast in Poulsbo on June 4.
James' brother has started a GoFundMe to ask for help, writing, "Hello family, friends, and community. I am Aaron Foster, the brother of James Wayne Foster whose life was needlessly taken from him in a horrific crime in Poulsbo, Washington last week. Our family is asking for help raising the funds for a proper burial. We thank you with grateful hearts in advance for donations and prayers. He will be put to rest at Fraola Cemetery in Port Orchard, Washington."
The backstory
According to court documents, Dinsmore confessed to murdering Foster with a rifle and to shooting towards SWAT team members when they were trying to arrest him in Snider Park on Wedneday.
No motive was given in the court documents, but detectives say Dinsmore is believed to have stolen items including a rifle from the home where Foster was staying on the property, and working as a caretaker while it was being renovated.
Detectives say a surveillance camera shows Dinsmore walking up with a rifle and firing twice at Foster, who was bent over working on an electric wheelchair, then jogging towards him and firing again. He then walked toward a motorhome, checked the rear window, walked back and allegedly shot Foster's lifeless body one more time. He then walked down the road and accessed Foster's truck.
Foster's body wasn't discovered until June 7. Dinsmore was arrested on June 12.

'No Kings' demonstrators to gather across Greater Cincinnati in opposition to Trump
A string of protests is planned throughout Greater Cincinnati as part of a nationwide movement opposed to President Donald Trump and his administration. The June 14 "No Kings" protests, organized by activist group Indivisible and its partners, are described as a "nationwide day of defiance." Events are slated to take place in nearly 2,000 communities across the nation to oppose what organizers describe as "corrupt, authoritarian politics." Numerous protests are scheduled to take place in the afternoon locally throughout Greater Cincinnati, including: Cincinnati – University Pavilion (University of Cincinnati): 2618 University Circle, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Union Township – Veterans Memorial Park: 906 Clough Pike, 45245. Loveland – Loveland Elementary School: 600 Loveland-Madeira Road, Loveland, Ohio 45140. Mason – Intersection of Mason Montgomery Road and Tylersville Road, 45040. West Chester Township – Intersection of Tylersville Road and Cox Lane, 45069. Hamilton – Intersection of South Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and High Street, 45011. Middletown – Towne Mall: 3461 Towne Blvd., 45005. Oxford – Uptown Park: intersection of Main Street and High Street, 45056. Falling on Flag Day and Trump's birthday, the day of protest is intended to help counter Trump's planned Washington, D.C. military parade. It also coincides with large-scale protests in Los Angeles, which erupted in response to Trump's immigration policy. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is carrying out a directive from Trump to find immigrants living in the United States without legal status. The aggressive crackdown has fueled anger and protests in Los Angeles and across the country, which have led to hundreds of arrests amid occasional violent clashes, vandalism and looting. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on June 8 outside the Butler County Jail to protest the arrest of 19-year-old Honduran immigrant Emerson Colindres, who was detained by ICE agents on June 4 during a routine check-in with immigration officials at the agency's office in Blue Ash. The Enquirer will have reporters covering the protests and will update this story. USA TODAY contributed to this report. ‘Hug your children': Father speaks out on his teen son's slaying in Brickell condo
Days before Father's Day, the heartbroken dad of Dominic Ferrell, the 17-year-old stabbed to death in a Brickell condo, is speaking out to thank those supporting his family, to condemn the violent killing and to urge parents to hold their children close. 'On this Father's Day, I pray that you hug your children and appreciate every precious moment you have with them,' Jon Ferrell said in a Friday afternoon statement. Police have said Dominic was killed in his sleep, stabbed with a kitchen knife by 26-year-old Kyrill Kehl in a condo on the 34th floor of Tower 3 of the Icon Residences by SS Vacation Rentals at 485 Brickell Ave. The stabbing happened around 2:15 last Sunday morning. Jon was with his son and asleep in the condo when his son, who had just finished his junior year at Miami Beach Senior High, was killed. Shortly after, Kehl would fall to his death at a neighboring building — police have yet to say if the fall was intentional or accidental. Jon and Dominic, who was the eldest of four children, weren't supposed to be seeing each other that day. Christine Maron, Dominic's mother, had gotten a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband in May, forbidding him from having contact with her or their children. Dominic visited his father against Maron's wishes, Maron's court filing says. 'All families have differences,' he said. 'Consistent with Dominic's extraordinary empathy and our loving bond, he chose to join me on the night of this horrific event. Of course, my wife and I will cooperate with law enforcement as we get to the bottom of this senseless murder.' Jon said that the night before, he and Dominic were making plans for Father's Day, which included a golf game with the entire family. Kehl had entered through the lobby, and waited until two men went up on the elevator, Miami Police said. He got off on the 47th floor, before making his way to the 34th floor. Tower 3 has both condo units, some of which are rented through Airbnb, and hotel rooms as it's the site of the W Miami Hotel. 'It is unimaginable to us that such a violent and deranged man was able to enter the lobby, elevator, and ultimately, the residential floors of the Icon Residences,' he said. 'I chose to stay at this well-known building because of my expectation of safety and security. I look forward to the Miami Police Department's findings for the closure our family so desperately needs.' Dozens have expressed their condolences for Dominic, a rising senior at Miami Beach High who aspired to attend the University of Florida and one day own a business. Russ Rywell, the longtime Beach High speech and debate teacher and coach, was impressed with how Dominic would prepare for a debate. 'He wasn't the type of [student] to not care about schoolwork or to just slide by,' Rywell told the Herald. '...He always put in effort and had a good attitude.' 'On behalf of my family, we want to thank all of you for your outpouring of love and support,' he said. 'Right now is the time for my family to heal and mend as we make funeral arrangements. We are shattered by the loss of Dominic, but we will be strong and will come together with God's help.' Miami Herald Staff Writer Grethel Aguila contributed to this report.
