Weeklong protest planned to observe the anniversary of RG Kar rape-murder

Kolkata, Aug 8 (UNI) Starting today, West Bengal is preparing for a fresh wave of protests to mark the first anniversary of the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata last August.
The incident, which triggered massive outrage across the state last year, is set to reignite public anger as various groups plan demonstrations targeting both the state administration and the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The victim's body was discovered on the morning of August 9 last year inside a seminar hall on the hospital premises. While civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the sole accused, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court, the CBI is yet to complete its probe into what it describes as a 'larger conspiracy' behind the crime.
This year's protests are expected to broaden their focus beyond the state government's role to also highlight the CBI's alleged inability to deliver a conclusive investigation.
The victim's parents have called for a Nabanna Abhijan (march to the state secretariat) on August 9, appealing to all political parties to join them in demanding justice. Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who first proposed involving the family in the protest, has extended full support to the march.
On Wednesday, Adhikari accused the state government of mobilising the entire police force to block the procession, claiming that top IPS officers had been summoned for a special briefing in Howrah to plan large-scale road deployments.
The march itself became the subject of legal proceedings after a case was filed before a division bench of the Calcutta High Court where the bench of Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Smita Das observed that peaceful protest and sit-in demonstrations are constitutional rights.
The court stated that the march could go ahead but noted that since the police had already issued prohibitory orders, they would be within their rights to take measures to stop it. At the same time, the judges advised participants to ensure that no government property was damaged and no police officer was harmed during the programme.
Several organisations, including the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), Medical Service Centre, service doctors affiliated to the All-India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO), West Bengal Doctors' Forum and Association of Health Service Doctors, have announced protest programmes from August 8 to 15.
JPD convenor Punyabrata accused the state government of failing to protect women in hospitals and educational institutions, citing another rape incident in a law college in South Kolkata after the RG Kar case as evidence of the continuing crisis.
'This shows the urgent need to return to the streets to demand justice and hold the government accountable," Punyabrata told media. The protest schedule begins on August 8, when the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum (WBJDF) will take out a torch rally from College Square to Shyambazar, followed by a midnight sit-in at the Shyambazar five-point crossing.
On August 9, JPD and Abhaya Mancha will tie rakhis in the morning as a symbolic gesture for safety and security, before marching from Hazra crossing to Kalighat in the afternoon, near the Chief Minister's residence. The day will end with a gathering at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
Protests will continue until August 14, when doctors and citizens will hold rallies and meetings across the state. On the night before Independence Day, a 'Reclaim the Night' march will take place in different parts of Kolkata, with women and families taking to the streets to demand justice.
With emotions still raw a year after the crime, the anniversary is set to become both an act of remembrance and a renewed challenge to authorities at both the state and Central level, accused of failing to deliver a complete and convincing investigation.

Minor Girl Missing Since 2023 Rescued From Rajasthans Pali, Five Arrested

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has rescued a minor girl from Pali, Rajasthan. She had gone missing from Bardhaman, West Bengal, since August 2023. The case was registered by CBI on February 16, 2024, in compliance with the order dated February 8, 2024, passed by the High Court of Calcutta in W.P. No. 793 of 2024. The missing girl had disappeared on August 9, 2023, when she had gone for tuition and did not return. It was believed that she had been kidnapped. Initially, the case was investigated by the local police and then by the CID, West Bengal. Thereafter, on the petition of the mother of the missing girl, the High Court at Calcutta transferred the case to the CBI. Based on the information received from sources and CDR (Call Detail Record) analysis, leads were obtained that the missing girl might have been sent to district Pali in Rajasthan. Accordingly, the CBI team visited Pali, Rajasthan, and after verifying the information, the missing girl was recovered from the residence of the accused at Pali, Rajasthan, on August 8, 2025. The investigation revealed that the missing girl was a minor when she went missing and was shown as a major in the affidavits created for her marriage. She was sold twice for marriage. It is suspected that this incident could be part of a bigger human trafficking network. After the rescue of the girl, CBI arrested five persons on August 8, in connection with the case and produced them in the Court of Judicial Magistrate, Marwad Junction, District Pali on August 9, 2025, which granted Transit Remand for three days in respect of all accused persons for their production before the Court of Additional District & Sessions Judge at Purba Bardhaman in West Bengal.

Election Commission delists 334 unrecognised political parties in clean-up drive

New Delhi, Aug 9 (UNI) As a part of a comprehensive and continuous strategy to clean up the electoral system, the Election Commission today delisted 334 Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs). According to an official statement, the action was taken after a thorough review. However, the delisted parties have the right to appeal before the Commission within 30 days. As per the press release, under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, there are currently six National Parties, 67 State Parties and 2,854 Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs) registered with ECI. The parties recognised as national parties include: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian National Congress (INC), and the National People's Party (NPP). According to rules, if a registered political party does not contest elections continuously for six years, it is liable to be removed from the list. Additionally, registered parties are required to periodically submit specific details to the Commission. The Commission stated that in June 2025, it had instructed the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of states and union territories to examine 345 RUPPs for compliance with the registration norms. During the verification process, notices were issued to these parties and they were given a chance to present their case. Reports submitted by the CEOs revealed that 334 of these parties were not complying with the registration requirements. The remaining cases have been sent back for further verification. Based on the findings and recommendations of the CEOs, the Commission has removed these 334 RUPPs from the list of registered political parties. As a result, out of the original 2,854 RUPPs, 2,520 now remain on the list. The delisted parties can file an appeal with the Election Commission within 30 days. UNI RBE RN

Five Jharkhand parties lose recognition in Election Commission crackdown

Ranchi, Aug 9 (UNI)The Election Commission of India (ECI) has cancelled the recognition of 334 registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs) across the country, including five from Jharkhand. The move follows a nationwide compliance review under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Income Tax Act, and the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. In Jharkhand, the parties removed from the register are Bharat Vikas Morcha of Deoghar, Bharatiya Janmukti Party and Manav Mukti Morcha of Palamu, Navjawan Sangharsh Morcha of Garhwa, and Rashtriya Mazdoor Kisan Prajatantrik Party of Ranchi. The action followed an inquiry by the state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), who identified seven RUPPs with no traceable addresses. All were served notices and asked to appear with sworn affidavits to confirm their existence. Only Jansadharan Party of Ranchi and Jharkhand Vikas Dal responded and retained their status. The other five did not send representatives, leading to their deregistration. With their removal, the parties lose their allocated symbols and entitlements, making them ineligible to contest elections under the same registration. The ECI order allows appeals within 30 days, though reversing compliance failures is often difficult. The crackdown is part of a broader national effort to remove dormant or non-compliant entities. In June, the ECI directed state CEOs to verify 345 RUPPs suspected of violating registration norms. Before the review, the ECI listed seven national parties, 67 state parties, and 2,854 RUPPs. Following the latest action, 2,520 RUPPs remain registered. Uttar Pradesh accounted for the largest number of deregistrations at 114, followed by Delhi with 26 and Tamil Nadu with 22. Jharkhand's five deregistrations place it among states with a moderate level of compliance issues. UNI XC BM
