Waqf Amendment Act a step towards protecting assets of Muslim bodies, says TMML
'The Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, is a step towards protecting the Waqf properties from rich and powerful Muslims who have benefited from the properties for years,' Tamil Maanila Muslim League (TMML) president S. Sheikh Dawood said on Monday.
Speaking to the media here, he said the survey of the Waqf properties should be expedited and the report should be uploaded on the website to ensure transparency.
Accusing All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and MP Asaduddin Owaisi of 'enjoying Waqf properties' worth ₹6,000 crore, Mr. Sheikh Dawood said several leaders and wealthy Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka were enjoying the benefits of Waqf properties without accountability.
'According to the Waqf properties data mentioned in the Sachar Committee's report, the board had properties worth ₹1.2 lakh crore. This means the revenue should have been at least ₹12,000 crore,' he said.
And, going by the current value of these properties, the revenue should have been at least ₹90,000 crore, he said. 'Where does the money go? The properties that should benefit the poor Muslims are falling into the hands of rich and powerful Muslims,' he alleged.
Asked why the TMML did not oppose the BJP government's decision to stop the scholarship scheme for Muslim students, Mr. Sheikh Dawood replied that if all the Waqf properties, enjoyed by a few people, were recovered, the educational expenses of all Muslim students could be met. The TMML had launched a movement named 'Waqf for the Ummah' to take the benefits of the amendment to all people of the State, he said.

Disputes emerge in Mumbai housing societies over goat sacrifice on Bakri Eid
As Mumbai prepares to celebrate Eid-al-Adha on Saturday, several housing societies in the city are witnessing disputes over permissions to sacrifice al-Adha or Bakri Eid is celebrated by the Muslim community as the festival of sacrifice. On this day, people traditionally sacrifice animals such as goats, sheep, or camels, and distribute the meat among family, friends, and those in issues have arisen following the enforcement of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) guidelines and growing objections from residents and neighbouring societies. On Thursday, the BMC's P South Ward office revoked the no-objection certificate (NOC) earlier granted to a housing society in Gokuldham, Goregaon East, after receiving objections from nearby civic body cited the presence of another slaughtering location within a 1-kilometre radius as the reason for the Priti Satam, who led a delegation to the BMC, said, 'In Satellite Society, Gokul Dham, permission was given for goat slaughter during Eid in open space. We met the ward officer and told him that you have given permission for slaughter in open space.'She added that the BMC acted according to its guidelines, which prohibit slaughter within 1 km of a religious structure or in an open space. 'We are thankful to BMC for respecting our religious sentiments. Festivals should be celebrated following guidelines,' Satam similar dispute reached the Bombay High Court after BMC denied permission to Maitri Society in Damodar Park, Ghatkopar West. The residents, who have been conducting sacrifices at the same location for years, approached the court. On Friday, the vacation bench directed the society to reapply for permission and instructed the BMC to decide on the application the same Kaif Mujawar, representing Maitri Society residents, said, 'We informed the honourable court that we have been getting permissions at the same location for past many years. Designated place for slaughtering is small and cramped. There is a limitation on number of goats that can be slaughtered there. Court has asked the society to reapply for the permission. Permissions once given are being revoked under political pressure.'In another case, a senior citizen from Kurla (W) filed a complaint alleging illegal animal slaughter in residential premises in Kurla's Naupada, citing hygiene per High Court directions, the BMC has issued guidelines specifying four categories of places where slaughtering is permitted upon obtaining an NOC — designated marketplaces, community spaces, privately owned premises, and housing if a community slaughtering space, including a religious one, is within 1 km walking distance from a housing society, then the NOC cannot be granted.

Kiren Rijiju launches UMEED Portal, says,
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju launched the UMEED Central Portal on Friday, a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. Speaking on the occasion, Rijiju asserted that the portal will bring transparency in managing the Waqf properties. 'The UMEED Portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help the common Muslims, particularly women and children,' Kiren Rijiju said. The portal, developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was officially inaugurated by George Kurian, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, at New Delhi. Calling it a historic step, Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED Central Portal is more than just a technological upgrade. 'It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for the poor Muslims, for whom it was originally meant,' he added. According to a release, the UMEED Central Portal, short for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995, will serve as a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. The portal is expected to introduce greater transparency, accountability, and public participation, thereby transforming the way Waqf assets are administered across India. The release stated the key features of the portal, including creation of a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties, online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness, transparent leasing and usage tracking, integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools and Public access to verified records and reports. Addressing the gathering, George Kurian said the Portal is a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring Waqf administration closer to the people. He added, 'The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed for.' The Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar said that he expected the UMEED Portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that the Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community.
