Steven Sim takes SKM Certification to champion TVET revolution

The Star17-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Steven Sim will be taking the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) for his fifth-level certification, alongside 100 industry leaders, to prove that technical and vocational education and training (TVET) extends beyond ordinary individuals.
'The IR Industry Revolution 4.0 is a TVET revolution. An education programme should be training individuals for the real world by making them learn on the job and by practice,' said the Human Resources Minister during the National Economic Forum 2025 held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (July 17).
He mentioned that the cabinet has agreed to table an amendment to the National Skills Development Act 2006 to increase the levels of SKM to 6, 7 and 8, to enhance the quality of TVET in the country.
He said these levels were equivalent to an individual receiving a degree or a master's certification.
'We want to make sure the recipients are not just stuck at level 5 (advanced diploma), but to go all out to higher levels,' said Sim.
He also hoped that this bill would be tabled in Parliament this year.
At the same time, Sim highlighted a flagship program under the ministry, Academy In Industry (ADI), which allows students to directly learn within the business environment, in the real world. Similarly, he mentioned another program called ILHAM program, which aims to provide 20,000 structured internships focusing on job learning set for a longer period.
'This structured internship is a human factor development.
'Under this programme, we not only provide double tax deduction for all of your internship expenses but also allow SME in the outskirts to use the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) levy to pay your interns, 'said Sim.

Anwar open to no-confidence motion in Parliament

Published on: Sunday, July 27, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 27, 2025 Text Size: Pic by Bernama PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ), on Sunday, said he remains open to any motion of no-confidence brought against him in Parliament. He noted that the opposition has repeatedly raised the idea of such a motion over the past three years. Anwar said if the opposition decides to proceed with the move, the government will not stand in the way. He added that the process is part of a proper parliamentary democracy and should be respected as such. The remark came after opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin recently hinted at tabling a no-confidence vote. However, Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the opposition might not have the numbers to push it through. Anwar previously instructed the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to allow any such motion to proceed if formally tabled. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Over 16,000 Cooperatives Incorporated In Various Sectors, With 7.2 Mln Members

MELAKA, July 27 (Bernama) -- More than 16,000 cooperatives nationwide have been incorporated in various economic sectors, with a total membership of 7.2 million. The Malaysia Cooperatives Commission (SKM) said the achievement showed that nearly one-fifth of the country's population are cooperative members. "The contribution of the cooperative sector's revenue, which reached RM68 billion, reflects the community's trust and acceptance of the cooperative model as an inclusive economic development platform. "In addition, the total accumulated assets of cooperatives have reached RM173 billion, resulting from the mobilisation of share capital or membership fees amounting to RM18.3 billion in 2024,' the SKM said in a statement issued in conjunction with the three-day 2025 National Cooperative Day (HKN) at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), which ended today. It also said that various programmes were organised to attract visitors, and a total of 242 exhibition booths from various ministries and Federal and state agencies were involved in HKN 2025 In addition, the MADANI Cooperative and Entrepreneur Mega Sales Programme (JMKU), which offers up to 30 per cent discounts for daily necessities, was also held. SKM said that at today's HKN 2025 closing ceremony, the government, through the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), presented awards to 10 cooperatives that demonstrated excellent performance in recognition of the cooperative movement. The award comprised the 2025 Best Malaysian Cooperative Award, 2025 Cooperative Activity Award, 2025 Most Promising Cooperative Award and 2025 Premier Cooperative Award. No 3R offences reported at opposition rally, says home minister

KULIM: The Home Ministry has yet to receive any reports of 3R (religion, race, and royalty) violations, or under any other laws, following the peaceful assembly organised by the opposition in the capital yesterday. Its minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said the rally proceeded smoothly and was well managed by police. It's a testament to the Madani government's commitment to upholding the freedom of assembly, he added. "As of this morning, I have not received any feedback from police regarding any reports or complaints about breaches of existing laws, including 3R-related issues. "But clearly, this is the clearest proof—a shining example—that the Madani government is truly upholding the freedom of assembly as guaranteed by the Constitution. "The police, in turn, maintained order with full responsibility and professionalism," he told reporters after the People's Volunteer Corps Department (Rela) anniversary celebration at Dataran Kulim in Kedah today. Saifuddin also criticised the organisers for failing to clearly remind participants not to bring underage children to the rally, as this is prohibited under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. "This Act outlines three main responsibilities. The police act as facilitators, organisers must not provoke issues related to race, religion, or the monarchy, and participants are not allowed to carry dangerous weapons or bring underage children. "Yesterday, some participants were unaware or not informed. The organisers merely called on people to gather in large numbers without saying that bringing children was prohibited. That is a legal offence," he said. Commenting further, Saifuddin challenged the opposition to not just stage weekly rallies but instead present better policies to rival those implemented by the government. He said that when it comes to the cost of living, the Madani government had already introduced clear measures, including increasing cash aid and lowering fuel prices by six sen and it is now time for the opposition to present their alternatives. "If you disagree with the government's policies, present your own welfare policies. If you think six sen is insufficient, state how much you would reduce it by, what mechanism you would use. Let the people compare. "We present policies and programmes, while they respond with insults and emotional politics. This deprives the people of a fair chance to assess. We reject this kind of dirty politics," he said. He said the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan debate in Parliament next week would be the best platform for the opposition to demonstrate their ability as an alternative bloc. "The people want to see ideas and policy offerings, not just street shouting. The opportunity is wide open. Present your policies in Parliament and let the people judge," he said.
