Four kanwariyas injured after bike hits nilgai in UPs Etah

Etah (UP), Jul 24 (PTI) Four kanwariyas were injured after their motorcycle hit a nilgai in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district on Thursday evening, police said.
Three of the kanwariyas suffered critical injuries, they said.
The incident occurred near Ghumariya village in Rijor area when the group was heading to Soron Ganga Ghat in Kasganj to collect sacred water, officials said.
'All four were thrown off the bike after it hit a nilgai that suddenly came onto the road," Circle Officer Kirtika Singh said.
'They were taken to Veerangana Avanti Bai Autonomous Medical College, Etah, where treatment is ongoing," the officer said.
The injured were identified as Ankit (Dholpur, Rajasthan), Lokesh and Devendra (Shamsabad, UP), and Rajesh (Firozabad).
The police said all four are friends and had undertaken the Kanwar Yatra together. Their families have been informed about the accident. PTI COR KIS NB NB

Google officials depose before ED in online betting linked PMLA case
New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Representatives of Google on Monday deposed before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of a money laundering probe linked to the promotion of 'illegal" online betting and gambling platforms, official sources said. Executives from Meta did not depose, they said. The ED had called the officials of the two tech giants, first on July 21 and later extended their deposition to July 28 as they sought more time to appear. The agency may also record the statement of a designated 'compliance officer" of Google under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) apart from obtaining some documents from the company on Monday, the sources said. A Google spokesperson had last week told PTI in a statement that the company was 'committed to keeping our platforms safe and secure, prohibiting the promotion of illegal gambling ads." 'We are extending our full support and cooperation to investigating agencies to hold bad actors responsible and keep users safe," the spokesperson had said. There was no response from Meta, formerly known as Facebook. The federal agency is probing several platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including alleged instances of advertisements placed for them on various social media outlets and app stores. The tech giants are understood to have been called by the ED to know how such illegal platforms place ads on their portals. The ED has claimed that illegal online betting and gambling platforms cheated people of their hard-earned money, and also laundered and evaded taxes to the tune of several crores of rupees. Google also said its 'continuous AI advancements, complemented by human expertise, ensure all ads on our surfaces comply with local laws and our strict ad policies, and protect users from evolving threats." 'Last year alone, we removed 247.4 million ads and suspended 2.9 million advertiser accounts in India," the firm had said. The ED is investigating more than a dozen cases linked to illegal gambling and betting platforms across the country, including the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) app, whose main promoters hail from Chhattisgarh. Dhami asks Uttarakhand officials to make anti-conversion law more stringent
Dehradun, Jul 28 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday expressed concern over recent incidents of attempted conversions in the state and asked officials to make the anti-conversion law more stringent. Proper counselling and guidance should be provided to people caught in the trap of elements indulging in conversion, Dhami said at a meeting held with senior officials at the secretariat. 'In view of recent incidents, immediate steps should be taken to make the anti-conversion law more stringent, " he said. In a joint effort, the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand police recently arrested six individuals linked to the Chhangur gang, an international religious conversion racket operating out of Pakistan and Dubai. Noting that Operation Kalanemi — targeting people impersonating saints, cheating the public and defaming Sanatan — which was launched earlier this month, has been successful in curbing such elements. He said the campaign, which is aimed at people hurting the image of Sanatan, needs to be carried forward. He said an SIT should be constituted at the state police headquarters level to monitor the campaign. 'Uttarakhand is a border state as well as the sacred land of Sanatan. Therefore, any attempt to change its demography should strictly be thwarted," he said, asking the police to keep an eye on such suspicious activities. The Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act, amended in 2022, prohibits religious conversion through misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or any fraudulent means. It is a cognisable and non-bailable offence, punishable by imprisonment of three to ten years and a fine of at least Rs 50,000. Additionally, the court may order the accused to pay compensation of up to Rs 5 lakh to the victim. CRPF jawan shot dead in Sonipat after tiff
Representative Image NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old CRPF jawan was shot dead in the early hours of Monday in his native village in Haryana's Sonipat district, police said. The incident occurred when the jawan, identified as Krishan, was returning home. Police suspect the involvement of youths who had an altercation with the CRPF jawan during the Kanwar Yatra. Two men on a two-wheeler allegedly opened fire on him and fled the scene. 'CRPF jawan Krishan died in the incident. His body has been sent for postmortem examination,' said Inspector Lal Singh, SHO of Sadar Gohana police station. Police said Krishan had recently been involved in an altercation with some local youths during the Kanwar Yatra. 'During the Kanwar Yatra, some youths of the village had entered into an altercation with him a few days ago. They have been identified,' the SHO added. Krishan is survived by his wife and a child. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
