Oil falls ahead of Trump-Putin summit in Alaska
Brent crude futures fell 50 cents, or 0.8%, to $66.34 a barrel by 0923 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures declined 57 cents, or 0.9%, to $63.39.
At Friday's meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, a ceasefire in the Ukraine is at the top of the agenda. Trump has said he believes Russia is prepared to end the war in Ukraine. However, he is also threatening to impose secondary sanctions on countries that buy Moscow's oil if the peace talks don't advance.
"The market is watching out for whether there is a ceasefire or not. An expectation of a ceasefire translates into more Russian production," said Giovanni Staunovo, commodity analyst at UBS. "The question is will there be escalation or de-escalation?"
Even if there is a deal, it would likely take longer to ease sanctions on Russia because that would have to go through the U.S. Congress, Staunovo said.
For the week, WTI is set to drop 0.7% while Brent is set to rise 0.4%.
Also out on Friday was weaker economic data from China, which spurred worries about fuel demand.
Chinese government data showed factory output growth slumped to an eight-month low and retail sales growth expanded at its slowest pace since December, weighing on sentiment despite stronger oil throughput in the world's second-largest crude user.
Throughput at Chinese refineries rose 8.9% year-on-year in July, however, that was down from June levels, which were the highest since September 2023. Despite the increase, China's oil product exports last month were also up from a year ago, suggesting lower domestic fuel demand.
Forecasts of a growing oil market surplus also weighed on sentiment, as did the prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. interest rates.
Bank of America analysts said in a Thursday note they were widening their forecast for the oil market surplus, citing growing supplies from OPEC+, a group consisting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other allies.
The analysts now project an average surplus of 890,000 barrels per day from July 2025 through June 2026.
That forecast follows predictions earlier this week from the International Energy Agency saying the oil market looks "bloated" after the OPEC+ increases.

The Development Process: From Planning to Deployment Building an AI-powered application involves several critical stages, including planning, coding, testing, and deployment. For example, a CRM system might incorporate features such as contact management, task tracking, and AI-assisted interactions. However, the development process is rarely linear and often presents challenges. Common obstacles include debugging version mismatches in tools like the Versel AI SDK (V5) or addressing limitations caused by outdated AI training data. To overcome these issues, consider using tools such as Playwright MCP for front-end testing and debugging. This ensures that your application's user interface functions as intended. Additionally, platforms like Perplexity can provide up-to-date web research and documentation, helping you bridge knowledge gaps and stay informed about the latest advancements. What I Own: We sold our business and bought our £1,160,000 Essex six-bed
Welcome back to What I Own – Metro's property series where we speak to homeowners about getting on the ladder. When 43-year-old Leekim Stewart and her husband started looking for new houses in the depths of the Essex countryside, a converted barn was at the top of their list. Vaulted ceilings and tonnes of character were their main priorities, so when they landed on their £1,160,000 six-bedroom home in Maldon, they knew they were onto a winner. Channelling Leekim's natural maximalist style and her husband's more pared-back, minimalist preferences they've certainly added character to their dream home since moving in 2023. Here's what Leekim had to say about their property journey… You can access completely fee-free mortgage advice with London & Country (L&C) Mortgages, a partner of Metro. Customers benefit from: – Award winning service from the UK's leading mortgage broker – Expert advisors on hand 7 days a week – Access to 1000s of mortgage deals from across the market Unlike many mortgage brokers, L&C won't charge you a fee for their advice. Find out how much you could borrow online Mortgage service provided by London & Country Mortgages (L&C), which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (registered number: 143002). The FCA does not regulate most Buy to Let mortgages. Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. I'm Leekim Stewart, and I live in a converted barn in the Essex countryside with my husband and our two young children, who are two and four. I juggle my days between three things: running my own finance brokerage, creating content for my Instagram account, where I showcase all things DIY and home decor related and finally, running the house and family. The property is in Maldon in Essex. It's in the heart of the countryside and right amongst the bugs and wildlife. It's definitely slow living here, which is not completely what I'm used to, but it's a great place to bring up children. I love Mrs Salsbury on the high street; it's a little cafe that does lovely little breakfasts or afternoon teas. There's also a restaurant called Black Pig, and they do the best lobster I've ever tasted. There are a few hidden gems in Maldon, you just have to find them. We moved in March 2023 – when I was six months pregnant! £1,160,000. We sold our business, another finance brokerage, which gave us enough to buy our previous Chelmsford home outright, which we did for £540,000. When we came to sell it, we sold it for £600,000. We got a mortgage on top to cover the rest. Our mortgage is roughly £2,700 per month, at 2.32% over 27 years. Bills cost £1,200. It was quite smooth apart from one element; that was that the drive wasn't registered on the land registry as the previous owner's, it was showing as owned by the council! It technically did belong to the owner, but the paperwork was never sorted for this. Leekim's DIY efforts not only completely transformed her bedroom, but they got her nominated for a Best Showstopping Home Feature in the Home Awards. Celebrating talent across 20 categories, including interiors, gardens, furniture innovation and home accessories, the awards highlight the best in the home renovations game. We found it on Rightmove. We were on the hunt for a converted barn, specifically one that had vaulted ceilings and tonnes of character. I would say my Bobo boucle chair. It's my favourite piece as it's so pretty to look at. We needed to have enough bedrooms/space to not only house my husband and my kids, but also three extra rooms to transform into an office as we both work from home. We wanted a walk-in wardrobe/laundry dumping ground, and the final non-negotiable was a playroom, as my husband can't stand toys in the living room. We've tried to work around the history of the barn by adding modern touches. We go to Soho Farmhouse quite often, so that also inspires our design choices. We used to live in Shoreditch, and we spent a lot of time in Brick Lane, in trendy cafes, bars and hangout spots. The decor tended to have a sense of a worn and battered feel, but often this would be turned on its head with fabrics, wallpaper and art. It's this type of charm we have tried to recreate here, and where we feel the most at home. My favourite room is the bedroom, and this is because I refurbished the entire thing myself! I also built the window seat, and it's actually been shortlisted as a finalist for the Ufurnish Awards (Best Transformation Before & After). I made it using Ikea Besta units; I hacked it from a TV unit to a window seat. Our bedroom needed a complete makeover, and something was seriously lacking: character and storage. I colour-drenched it in a deep warm pink and added statement hardware to really customise it. Not at first, but we built some storage under the stairs, a window seat in the bedroom and a bookshelf unit in the living room. We wanted to extend the kitchen out so we could have an open plan living situation. It's hard to watch the kids as well as cook, so to have an open-plan kitchen/living room would be ideal. Yes, the entire house needed to be rewired as the way it was configured was an extreme fire hazard – we also have a thatched roof! View More » We have plans to move abroad one day.
