International flights can land at airport in Haiti's southwest for the 1st time

Independent05-03-2025
An airport in southwestern Haiti is ready to receive international flights for the first time, officials said Wednesday, adding a safer option for commercial airlines that have halted all flights to the main airport in Port-au-Prince, where gang violence persists.
The Antoine Simon Airport in the coastal city of Les Cayes, named after a Haitian president who led a rebellion in the early 1900s, operated for almost two decades before renovations began in 2013 to extend its runway.
It is now Haiti's third international airport, a development that is expected to boost the local economy and provide a new way for some nonprofits to distribute sorely needed aid.
'It's really exciting,' said Wynn Walent, executive director of the Colorado-based nonprofit Locally Haiti, which operates in Haiti's southwest. 'For understandable reasons, folks are focused on the challenges in Port-au-Prince, but there is so much that can be done in the south. This could be a big step in that direction.'
Hugh Aprile, Mercy Corps' regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, celebrated the new runway, saying it's possible more organizations will base their teams in Les Cayes instead of Port-au-Prince.
'Much of the needs are in the southern peninsula,' he said. 'For us, this will be helpful.'
Leslie Voltaire, president of Haiti's transitional presidential council, traveled to Les Cayes to unveil the renovated airport Wednesday, saying it would help develop sectors including tourism.
'Infrastructure is the basis of a country's economic development,' he said.
Most people traveling to Haiti land at the international airport in the north coastal city of Cap-Haitien, then travel by land or helicopter to the capital.
The Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince remains open but commercial flights have been halted since gangs opened fire on three planes in November, slightly injuring a flight attendant.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration extended a ban on U.S. flights to Haiti's capital until March 12.
It wasn't immediately clear if U.S. commercial flights will use the redeveloped airport, nor if any international flights have landed yet on the extended runway at Les Cayes.
Local media reported that technicians from the U.S. airline JetBlue arrived in Les Cayes to inspect the runway. The company did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
Martine Villeneuve, country director for Action Against Hunger, celebrated the renovated airport but noted it came too late for her organization.
Action Against Hunger was targeted by the recent USAID cuts and was forced to eliminate a nutrition and feeding program that served 13,000 people in Haiti's rural northeast and south. Now, the organization is focused on helping people in Port-au-Prince and the central Artibonite region.
'We are trapped in Port-au-Prince,' she said. 'It's very difficult to get in and out.'
Gangs control 85% of the capital as well as all the main roads leading to the country's north and south.

Alexander Dennis site up for sale amid consultation to close Scottish operations

Alexander Dennis' Falkirk site has been put up for sale as the bus manufacturer consults on proposals to shut Scottish operations. Due to financial concerns, the company is considering moving away from the Larbert location to a single site in Yorkshire, potentially putting 400 jobs at risk. The manufacturers made a 'significant investment' to expand the Falkirk location during 2023 and 2024. The company states although the Larbert location is listed for sale, a 'final decision' is still to be made A spokesperson for Alexander Dennis said: 'This does not represent a foregone conclusion and a final decision has not yet been made. 'We have been honest with stakeholders about the need to address the condition of the Falkirk site for some time, which is why significant investment was made to expand our Larbert site for vehicle manufacturing during 2023 and 2024. 'Alexander Dennis continues to engage with governments in good faith and the company remains committed to exploring all possible outcomes at this time.' STV News Due to financial concerns, the company is considering moving away from the Larbert location to a single site in Yorkshire Fife-based bus manufacturer Greenfold Systems Ltd in Dunfermline has already entered administration and made 81 employees redundant as a knock-on effect of Alexander Dennis' plans to pull out of Scotland. The company employed a total of 90 staff, with nine staying on a short-term basis to complete a customer contract. Finance secretary Shona Robison previously said the Government is committed to looking at 'all viable options' and ministers are working with private bus companies to drum up interest for much-needed orders. She also suggested Alexander Dennis could be forced to pay back money it has been given by the Government's commercial arm Scottish Enterprise for skills and technological development, though it would be for the agency to decide how to proceed. The finance secretary also stressed the issues the Government faces due to UK-wide state aid regulations, which govern the level to which ministers can intervene in private businesses. STV News Alexander Dennis states although the Larbert location is listed for sale, a 'final decision' is still to be made Robison said the Subsidy Control Act does not allow for subsidies which enforce the use of domestically-made goods and services, which would hamper the Scottish Government's efforts to force bus firms to use Alexander Dennis. A UK Government spokesperson said: 'The UK is a global leader in bus manufacturing, and around 60% of buses funded through our zero-emission regional bus programme are being built by UK-based companies, supporting jobs and a greener transport network. 'Alexander Dennis has a strong future in the UK's growing zero-emission bus market. Through the spending review, we have committed £15.6bn to local leaders to boost services and green fleets across the UK. 'We're also giving regional leaders and leading manufacturers a voice on zero-emission plans, through the UK bus manufacturing expert panel, which seeks to put local people at the heart of bus building.' Dozens of new jobs could be created through electric bus charging hub after Renfrewshire Council green light

Ember Core has been granted planning permission to develop the facility on land to the southwest of St James Interchange. Dozens of new jobs could be created through the introduction of an electric bus charging hub in Paisley after plans were given the green light by Renfrewshire Council. ‌ Ember Core has been granted planning permission, subject to conditions, to develop the facility on brownfield land to the southwest of St James Interchange. ‌ The Edinburgh-based company, an electric coach operator, will use the site as a base for charging its vehicles and expects it to support approximately 60 new jobs, including driving roles, hub support and operational staff. ‌ An operational statement submitted with the application explained: "Ember, the UK's first 100 per cent electric coach operator, based in Edinburgh, plans to establish a new hub at West March Road, Paisley, to be used as a base for charging its vehicles. "This hub will allow Ember to establish new long-distance bus services from Glasgow Airport and Glasgow, for example, to Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh." It continued: "Once fully operational, Ember anticipates that this site will support approximately 60 new jobs. This includes driving roles as well as hub support and operational staff. All roles will pay well above the real living wage. ‌ "The proposed site is a brownfield site close to Junction 29 of the M8. The location has been chosen due to its proximity to Glasgow Airport and Paisley, both attractive passenger destinations." Ember will primarily use the site for parking and charging buses and there will be a total of 18 parking bays, including space for up to 11 buses to charge simultaneously. During the day, an average of two to four buses are likely to be charging at any one time, with all bays only occupied overnight. ‌ The company also intends to add staff parking, a welfare unit for driver breaks and a gantry bus wash to make sure its fleet can be cleaned frequently. The nearest residential properties, which are found at St James Avenue, are located in excess of 200 metres to the southeast of the site. A report of handling by the council's chief planning officer said: "Given the nature and scale of the proposed development, it is considered that it would be compatible with the surrounding area without detriment to amenity."
