Mila Kunis Black Swan Diet Saw Very Little Eating
Mila notably played Natalie Portman's ballerina rival Lily, and in a new interview with Vogue to celebrate the film's release 15 years ago, she opened up about her grueling routine to achieve the skinny physique required to play her.
Mila said, "My prep was a lot of dancing and very little eating — which I know you're not supposed to say, but it's the truth. I drank a lot of broth and danced for 12 hours a day."
The actor, who stands 5'4," previously revealed that she got down to just 95 pounds so she would "look skinny" enough to convincingly play a ballerina. "Because I'm not a ballerina, I have to get on point within three months, and so to get on point, you almost have to fake it," she told Howard Stern in 2016. "So, the best way to fake it is to unfortunately look like it."
"I smoked a lot of cigarettes and I ate a limited amount of calories," Mila added, specifying that she survived on an average of 1,200 calories a day. She told Howard that she had since stopped smoking, and although she insisted she lost the weight "in the healthiest way possible," she said she wouldn't recommend her regimen to anyone. "I don't advocate this at all," she stated. "It was awful."
In the Vogue interview, Mila also opened up about other challenges while filming, including the physical toll that dancing eventually took on her body.
She said, "We would shoot those dancing scenes for hours, and I had bruises all over my ribs just from being lifted over and over again. I also dislocated my shoulder pretty early in the production and thought I was completely screwed, but [director] Darren [Aronofsky] sent me to an acupuncturist and I somehow came out totally fine."
According to her, Natalie also suffered an injury on set while shooting the scene of Lily being pushed into a mirror. Natalie told Vogue she "completely blacked that out" and did not have "a hint of a memory" of it, but Mila recalled, "You were scarred up all around your neck."

How Darren Aronofsky Tried To Turn Mila Kunis & Natalie Portman Against Each Other
If you can believe it, it's nearly been 15 years since Black Swan came out. Now, celebrating the milestone in an interview with Vogue, the stars behind the classic have spilled some behind-the-scenes details. For context, the 2010 movie stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a top ballerina who is preparing to play both the White Swan, Odette, and the Black Swan, Odile, in Swan Lake. As she struggles to tap into her darker side for Odile, Nina risks losing the part to another top ballet dancer named Lily, who is played by Mila Kunis. The film got five Academy Award nominations and earned Natalie an Oscar for Best Actress in 2011. If you've seen it, you'll know Nina and Lily have a complicated rivalry in the film, and speaking to Vogue, director Darren Aronofsky recalled his attempts to bring some of that tension into the real world. 'I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue,' he said, when asked about a claim that he 'tried to pit Natalie and Mila against each other.' 'Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. They're both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing.' On X, Darren's quotes have received a bit of backlash, with people suggesting that his 'manipulative' and 'weird' scheme sought to undermine Natalie and Mila's skills as actors. 'they should be equipped enough to create any necessary rivalry on screen,' one user wrote. 'there's no need for mind games behind the scenes when they are meant to ACT like there is drama or tension.' 'What a bizarrely cutesy sheen this language puts on 'I tried to gaslight the two women working for me into fighting cause I thought it would make my movie better and didn't care at all about their actual human psyches,'' someone else wrote, adding that 'two less experienced actresses might have fallen for it.' Despite this, Mila and Natalie's recollections of the situation indicate that there was no harm done, and that they both enjoyed working with Darren very much — despite his reputation as a 'scary' and 'intense' director. 'I remember being separated from Mila and that we weren't in the same space a lot when we weren't shooting,' Natalie remembered. 'Darren made some comment early on, like, 'Ya know, Nat, Mila's dancing so well.' And I was like, 'Of course she is! She's so fucking talented and I love her so much and I'm happy she's doing a great job!'' 'Black Swan was the first time I felt like I had a mind meld with a director, where each of us always knew exactly what to say,' she continued. 'Every time we talked it felt like he gave me a little key that unlocked a scene for me.' Similarly, Mila knew better than to fall for the mind games. 'Darren would tell me, 'Nat is working really, really hard. She's not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off.' Then I would text Nat and she'd be like, '...No, I'm not?'' she recalled. 'I think that's how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun.' 'I remember doing press for Black Swan and every journalist wanted to know how scary Darren was: 'How intense was his set? How intense was he?'' Mila went on. 'I would say, 'He's actually a really kind, lovely guy who took us to see Twilight one time because we had the day off.' And journalists were always so disappointed that he wasn't some tortured soul who treated us like garbage.' At numerous points in the interview, Mila and Natalie highlight their close friendship, which dates back years before they even starred together in Black Swan. In fact, it was Natalie who first suggested Mila should be cast alongside her. And Darren really thought he could get these two to hate each other? Think again. Do you love all things TV and movies? Justin Bieber Balances Baby Jack on His Shoulders in Candid New Photos
THE RUNDOWN Jack Blues Bieber turns one on Friday, and in the lead-up to his August 22 birthday, his dad, Justin Bieber, is giving a new glimpse at their relationship. This morning, Justin shared an Instagram carousel featuring photos of him with Jack on his shoulders. Jack wore a red sleeveless outfit with his shirtless father. On August 16, Hailey, Justin's wife and Jack's mom, posted her own photo with Jack. The two were captured playing together, with Jack dressed in a striking yellow look: Justin hasn't given any extended interviews yet on fatherhood; but for Hailey's Vogue cover earlier this year, he told the outlet in an email, 'I'm walking in the days I always dreamed of,' as a parent with her. The singer also included a track on Swag called 'DADZ LOVE' that touches on the joy he feels being a father and caring for his son. Hailey has been more open about her life as a mother, telling Vogue that Jack is 'my priority. He is the most important thing to me.' She added that becoming a parent has 'been my biggest teacher so far, the biggest teacher in my relationship. You see your partner so differently. I think you empathize with your parents a lot more. There's so much perspective that comes with it.' The model added that she would like to have at least one more child, and beyond that, she and Justin will take it 'a kid at a time.' While Justin and Hailey reportedly had some relationship issues earlier this year, the couple is now in a good place. A source told Entertainment Tonight in July, 'Justin and Hailey are doing much better these days, [but] things were up and down for a bit. Even though they have gone through rough patches in their marriage, divorce was not on the table. Hailey loves Justin and the family they've built.'

The 2025 Dogue Competition Winners Are Here!
The inaugural Dogue Competition took America (and the Vogue office) by storm. When we first launched the contest, we thought we would maybe get a couple thousand submissions. Perhaps this was naive, but absolutely nothing could have prepared us for what was about to take place. Within 24 hours, we had tens of thousands of entries, a viral TikTok, and national press reporting on the contest. To be frank, we were equal parts overjoyed and panicked. The contest still had nine more days to go. At 6 p.m. EST (on the dot) on Friday, August 8, we finally closed the competition. We felt a small sigh of relief before realizing that we now had to figure out how to go through and judge 56,749 photos of dogs. So we did what the Vogue staff does best: divide, conquer, and debate the results. The entire editorial staff, and a few special external judges (shoutout to WeRateDogs and Westminster Kennel Club), were brought in to help narrow down the pups until we ended up with 27 wonderful finalists. At this point, we were feeling good! We had five judges, 27 printed photos displayed like model headshots on the Vogue conference table, and a 30-minute time slot to pick one winner. Simple enough? Unfortunately, we were terribly wrong. Let's just say, we haven't seen the Vogue staff this passionate about anything since the Prada sample sale. We had crossed words, snarky slacks, raised voices, and even (almost) some tears. The team was not holding back. 'I'm devastated by this choice,' one editor announced after we almost came to a decision. 'I really think this one feels more on brand,' claimed another. In an effort to ease the tension, one editor even offered to switch sides: 'I was really on the fence, so I can change my vote if that helps!!' Truth be told, Dogue almost broke the Vogue office. With more than 50,000 submissions, choosing one winner was a nearly impossible feat. But through hours of dedication, passionate debate, and some tense moments among colleagues, our judging panel finally came to a decision. Introducing Tango: Vogue's 2025 Dogue Winner. And, of course, our two paw-fect runners-up: Lola and Rupurt, who's person exclusively shared with the Dogue team that, 'Vogue has been his [Rupurt's] dream since day one. He's been manifesting it & truly barking it into existence.' Photo: @rupurtpoopurt Photo: @beccaholt Ultimately, it came down to our official judging criteria: Photo composition (50%), dog's personality conveyed through the photo (25%), and good 'dogueness' (25%). And Tango had it all: a striking pose (okay, leg!), a chic chair perfectly framing the photo, and a facial expression that reads, 'I know I am a cover girl.' To quote Parker Hubbard, Vogue's global design director, '[Tango] is understated but serving.' This hound has the Vogue It factor we were all looking for. After all…before it's in fashion, it's in Dogue. So without further ado, introducing Tango and his human, Jennifer. What is Tango's best quality? Tango is very active, always on the move, looking for critters (squirrels, lizards, moles, fish, etc.). Who would voice Tango in a movie? Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played Simba in The Lion King. Describe the voice you use to talk to Tango? High-pitched with a New York accent and a touch of baby talk. Where is one place you wish you could take Tango? Ecuador, because we visit family there often, and I hate having to leave him behind. Where is the strangest place you've taken Tango? Surfing! What is the most human thing Tango does? He makes intense eye contact and facial expressions. What is the most dog thing your dog does? Tango gets the zoomies after a bath. What is Tango's full name? Tango George Ordonez. Astrological sign? Libra. Worst habit? Begging for more treats by standing at the pantry door indefinitely. Strangest habit? Hunting lizards. Buy a DOGUE hat below:
