UK & WHO Provide £2 Million Support for Palestinian Patients in Egypt
The World Health Organization (WHO) has signed a new £1 million funding agreement with the Government of the United Kingdom to provide high-quality medical services to patients and injured individuals evacuated from Gaza for treatment in Egypt. The project aims to support approximately 4,000 patients, including those suffering from chronic illnesses and injuries.
This new funding complements a previous £1 million grant awarded several months ago, bringing the total UK contribution to £2 million.
Earlier this year, a high-level delegation from the WHO in Egypt and the British Embassy in Cairo visited Al-Arish General Hospital—one of the primary referral hospitals receiving patients from Gaza.
During the hospital visit, members of the delegation spoke with Palestinian patients receiving care, met with the hospital's medical staff, and consulted with representatives from Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population to assess the hospital's medical needs.
Dr. Naeema Al-Gasseer, WHO Representative in Egypt, stated, "Egypt has received the largest number of injured evacuees from Gaza for specialized medical care and continues to treat them equally to Egyptian citizens across 170 hospitals in 24 governorates.
British Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley said, "Egypt has played a pivotal role in assisting those in need from Gaza. The United Kingdom is proud to stand alongside our Egyptian partners and the WHO in this life-saving effort. Whether through funding medical care in Egypt or supporting patients who have arrived in the UK, our shared commitment is clear: to ensure the injured and most vulnerable receive the urgent care they require."

FM, Palestinian PM visit Arish Hospital to check on the wounded from Gaza

Egypt, India's BDR Group in talks to establish biologics, cancer drug facility
Egypt's Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, met Tuesday with Dharmesh Shah, Chairperson and Managing Director of India's BDR Group, to discuss plans for a joint pharmaceutical venture, including the establishment of a local facility for the production of biologics and cancer medications, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health. The meeting also included Gamal El-Leithy, CEO of Future Pharmaceuticals Industries (FPI) and head of Egypt's Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industry, as well as senior officials Hisham Stait, Head of the Unified Procurement Authority, and Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority. Minister Abdel Ghaffar emphasized Egypt's strategic goal of localizing pharmaceutical manufacturing and transferring advanced technology to enhance national drug security. He underscored the importance of partnering with global industry leaders to reduce reliance on imports and ensure access to affordable, high-quality medicines for Egyptian patients. Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar noted that the proposed facility aims to significantly lower the country's import bill for specialty drugs—particularly oncology treatments—which place considerable pressure on the national budget and foreign currency reserves. The project is expected to provide a stable, cost-effective supply of essential biologic therapies. Israa Farhan Croatian freediver Vitomir Maričić has set a new Guinness World Record after holding his breath underwater for an astonishing 29 minutes and 3 seconds. The record-breaking feat took place in a private swimming pool, where Maričić prepared by breathing pure oxygen for ten minutes before submerging. This pre-breathing technique helped saturate his blood with oxygen, dramatically boosting his endurance and allowing him to surpass the previous record by a full five minutes. His achievement has now been officially recognized by Guinness World Records, making him the holder of the world's longest static breath-hold. For comparison, harbor seals can replenish up to 90% of the air in their lungs with each breath, while humans manage only about 20%. Remarkably, Maričić's breath-hold performance even exceeded the diving capacity of bottlenose dolphins. Maričić explained that his preparation focused on raising his oxygen levels to many times above the natural baseline, which enabled him to push human limits. He added that even without pure oxygen, he can hold his breath for more than ten minutes. The record for unaided breath-holding, without oxygen pre-breathing, remains with Serbian diver Branko Petrović, who achieved 11 minutes and 35 seconds in 2014. By contrast, most people struggle to hold their breath for more than a minute under normal conditions.
