Uphold good image of Sabah, IPDAS grads told

Kota Kinabalu: Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman said graduates of the Institute of Islamic Studies and Dakwah Sabah (IPDAS) serve as religious ambassadors, successors to the mission of dakwah and a source of hope for the community. Therefore, he reminded the graduates to always uphold the good name of Sabah wherever they are, as the ethics and knowledge gained from IPDAS serve as a light guiding the community.
Advertisement 'IPDAS has succeeded in providing a strong foundation and understanding, producing preachers who can foster harmony within the community with wisdom and discernment,' Musa said in his speech at the 19th IPDAS Convocation Ceremony at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Monday. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif. Musa said since its establishment, IPDAS has played a significant role in promoting the message of Islam in Sabah, having produced high-quality preachers and spreading charitable work throughout the State, which is renowned for its diversity of ethnicity, culture and language. At the same time, Musa reminded the graduates that their success was not solely the result of their own efforts, but also the sacrifices of their parents, lecturers and fellow students who worked hard to provide moral and material support. He also expressed his satisfaction at the rapid progress achieved by IPDAS, both in physical infrastructure and academic development, which has contributed to a more comfortable and conducive campus environment. He said the hard work and sacrifices of parents in supporting their children's success stem from the belief that, at the end of their efforts, lie priceless blessings and honour. SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Day Memorial will stand as a living bridge to forge understanding, friendship and trust between Sabah, Australia and Britain, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, yet for many families, especially those who have journeyed here from Australia, the United Kingdom and beyond, the memories of loved ones lost in Sandakan remain vividly alive. 'Our gathering this morning goes beyond mere remembrance. It's a tribute with purpose. Sandakan isn't just a site of tragedy. It's where the human spirit shone brightly amidst cruelty. 'It is a place where bonds were forged from adversity, where the noble actions of local Sabahans shone alongside the struggles of Allied soldiers. Here and now, we reaffirm our dedication to peace, unity and memory,' he said in his speech read out by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee during the Sandakan Day Memorial held at the Sandakan Memorial Park, Friday. Hajiji said the Sandakan Death Marches and the horrors of the prisoner-of-war camps have been etched into history, not only because of the atrocities but also due to moments of shared humanity, as the quiet acts of kindness and persistent hope of those who clung to the idea of freedom against all odds. 'To the families of the fallen, your presence here means everything. Your loved ones, whether soldiers or Sabahans who risked everything to save them, are not forgotten. We honour their strength, their sacrifice, and their profound humanity. 'In Sabah, you will always find a sanctuary to remember them. Sandakan is sacred ground for you, too. As Chief Minister of Sabah, I assure you that this legacy will be preserved, ensuring it is honoured and passed on to future generations,' he added. Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke, British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ajay Sharma and New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia Michael Wehi Mailetonga Walsh were in attendance, along with senior officials from the Australian High Commission and the United States Embassy. Sandakan Day is held each year on Aug 15. 15.08.2025 Earlier, on Thursday, a welcoming dinner of the event was held at Sabah Hotel and graced by Vivian, representing Hajiji. Also launched was the Sandakan Death Marches Trail Map. Garry Rose and Georgia Rose of Australia made a special performance with Sandakan song as well as Japanese students (Yakusoku Tabi Group) with their special performance. In his speech, Hajiji said it is important to strengthen historical education in schools so that every child knows the story of Sandakan's heroes. 'We need to preserve our historical sites and natural heritage as living memorials, promote unity across all communities, inspired by the shared legacy of sacrifice.' he added. Sandakan was once the capital of British North Borneo — a city of promise, prosperity and diversity. Known as Elopura, the 'Beautiful Town,' it was a hub of commerce and culture. But war changed everything. Yet from the ashes of destruction, Sandakan rose again. Promoting peace through art

Kota Kinabalu: Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 will be visiting schools in the coming months to promote peace through painting. This follows the launch of the club's recent Peace Poster Contest themed 'Together as One' by District Governor Dato' Winnie Lee Siew Ping at the Sabah International Convention Centre. Introduced in 1988, the contest is a global initiative encouraging young people aged 11 to 13 from around the world to express their visions and ideals of peace through art, she said. The event also aims to foster creativity, broaden their global perspectives, and spread the message of peace, she added. 'This contest is not merely a competition of creativity but a channel for nurturing human values and cultural understanding. 'Over the years, Lions Clubs worldwide have actively engaged schools, planting the seeds of peace in the hearts of children,' she said. For the contest, preliminary rounds will be held to select outstanding artworks for the district-level competition, with winners then nominated for the Multiple District and International levels. The contest aligns with District 308-A2's mission of Focusing on Youth, Sowing the Seeds of Peace—for every artwork is a light of peace painted by a child to brighten the world. ‘No pork, no lard' not proof of halal status: Jais

KUALA LUMPUR: The phrase 'No pork, no lard' displayed at some eateries does not necessarily mean the food is halal, and cannot be used arbitrarily, according to Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Sinar Harian reported.. Jais said terms such as 'Muslim friendly' or 'No pork, no lard' are strictly prohibited for any party without a Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM). Jais said such phrases may give the impression that food or services comply with halal standards, when in reality, without valid halal certification, there is no guarantee they meet requirements relating to ingredients, preparation, and cleanliness. The explanation was made in a recent Jais social media video titled 'Penggunaan 'Muslim Friendly' salah?', which highlighted the importance of clear and accurate labelling for consumers. Under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, it is illegal to use any term or label that may mislead the public, Jais added. Only SPHM holders are allowed to use these terms, as 'No pork, no lard' merely indicates the absence of pork but does not address other non-halal elements such as alcohol, cross-contamination, or non-halal gelatin.
