Leeds can't win every race...

BBC News04-06-2025
Leeds United may have won the Championship and secured a place in the Premier League but it turns out there's at least one race their players couldn't come out on top in.Three of the club's fastest players - Willy Gnonto, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt - took on the challenge of sprinting against a Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car, steered by F2 driver Arvid Lindblad. The flying footballers initially looked like they may have too much in the tank for the machine in a race which went from penalty box to penalty box and back on the Elland Road turf. The car easily won the day, taking control as all parties raced back to their starting penalty box.Ramazani said: "The only thing better would be getting in the car. I love F1. I went to the Monaco Grand Prix last week, which was a bucket list moment for me. I used to play F1 games on the console when I was younger, so it was surreal to be next to a real car and race against it."In May of 2024, Red Bull secured a minority ownership stake in Leeds United, and took over as their front-of-shirt sponsor.

UK economy bigger than previously estimated by end of 2023

The UK economy was bigger than previously estimated at the end of 2023, according to revised official figures. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said revised data showed that the economy was 2.2% larger at the end of 2023 than its previous peak shortly before the coronavirus pandemic began. It had previously reported that the economy had grown by 1.9% over the period. The ONS said the improved data came after a regular update over how it calculates UK gross domestic product (GDP). It said the change was linked to improved data regarding research and development, as well as an improved measure of how its records the activity of large multinational companies. Later data from corporation tax returns meant that growth in 2022 was stronger than previous predicted, with the data highlighting stronger profits than previously estimated. The ONS also highlighted that the research included improvements to the way education statistics were measures, indicating that the decline in the sector in 2020 was smaller than previously reported. However, it added that education then 'recovered less quickly in the years following the pandemic', meaning it has grown slightly less than originally believed. Craig McLaren, head of national accounts for the ONS, said: 'While the size of the economy now captured by GDP has increased, the long-term pattern of growth is broadly unchanged. 'These improvements announced today help ensure we can continue to provide high-quality estimates of the size and shape of our ever-changing and increasingly digital and globalised economy.'

Leeds in talks over AC Milan forward as Daniel Farke makes transfer priority clear

Leeds are advancing in talks with AC Milan for Noah Okafor as Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his forward line. The promoted club have made eight summer signings but want to add to their attack and are progressing in their attempts to sign the Switzerland winger. Okafor, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Napoli, could join the exodus from AC Milan after Tijjani Reijnders, Theo Hernandez and Malick Thiaw were sold. Leeds have spent more than £70m this summer but the only attackers they have recruited, Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, came on free transfers. Nmecha scored the winner in their Premier League opener against Everton on Monday and afterwards Farke underlined his priorities in the transfer market. 'Especially in the offence it would be good to have a few more options available,' he said. 'With Dominic we got the first one. "But to be ready for a long Premier League season, we definitely need a bit more quality up front. At this level, to bring players in who will improve our squad is pretty costly, but we've got ambitious owners and great people who work their socks off to give our club the best possible squad.'

Leeds 1-0 Everton - the fans' verdict

We asked for your thoughts after Monday's Premier League game between Leeds United and are some of your comments:Leeds fansAndy: A work in progress. A really good performance, perhaps deserving a slice of luck with the goal. Looked solid against a rather blunt Everton attack. Definitely needs a little more magic up front. But these are matches to take points from, Leeds must be on the right side of results in matches like this if they are to stay in the We were a little fortunate with the penalty but we will be "unfortunate" many more times as the season progresses. Better team won. Period. Onwards & upwards!Gary: As a Leeds fan I think it was harsh but I will take it. I'm sure over the course of the season we will have decisions go against A solid performance particularly in the first half. Lacked some quality in the final third which is what needs to be sorted in the next few It was a decent performance, particularly in the first half. Both teams struggled to create much and it wasn't always the best of quality but we proved that we can compete and this will build fansGlenn: Poor performance and a terrible penalty decision shouldn't hide that fact. Everton are notoriously slow starters and only one new face in the starting 11 shows the transfer window has been poor so far. Beto has been awful in pre-season and our new striker Thierno Barry should've started. A makeshift back four, no right-winger, no right-back, it's hard for Moyes to establish any kind of playing style. Lots to do before the window A poor performance, definitely second best. But battled hard and an awful penalty Poor display. Too many backwards passes. No intent to go forward. Obviously terrible penalty decision. Need more quality signed up ASAP!Dave: Awful display, but it's not time to panic. Moyes' teams always start slow and this one still has some incomings to sort out and major defensive injury issues. We'll grow into the season and have a strong second half to finish top half I think. Also, never a Never a penalty. We were lucky to be in the game after first half but unlucky not to get anything from the game after our second-half performance. We can do better and with signing of players for the right side of the pitch we can challenge for Europe.
