Young Liberals urge Coalition to distance itself from Sky News and blame Maga ‘mirage' for Dutton loss

The Guardian5 days ago
The Young Liberals want the Coalition to distance itself from Sky News and appeal to voters through a wider variety of media outlets, blaming Donald Trump-style culture wars for Peter Dutton's historic election rout.
In a submission to the party's election postmortem, obtained by Guardian Australia, the New South Wales Young Liberals division said the 'fringe right' of the Liberal membership had too much influence over policy and campaign media, causing 'a mirage of the Maga movement' which turned off women and multicultural voters.
The 31-page assessment, handed to the review being led by Liberal elders Pru Goward and Nick Minchin, is scathing of the campaign run by Dutton and his frontbench team, describing them as badly outplayed by Labor and out of touch with traditional Liberal constituencies.
The document has not been released publicly and was provided to Guardian on the condition of anonymity.
'The 2025 election proved that being one of the loudest media voices in the room does not mean voters are listening to you,' it said.
'Viewership data shows that most Australians do not engage with overtly political commentary on traditional media, such as evening commentators on Sky News. Yet much of our party's policy agenda and media appearances during the campaign were stuck in a conservative echo-chamber.'

Labor won 94 seats, its biggest victory in decades, while the Coalition was reduced to 43 seats in the lower house.
Pointing to Dutton directly, the submission said the parliamentary leader must 'front up' to a range of media outlets, including those not considered 'traditionally friendly' to the Liberal and Nationals parties.
Ahead of his 3 May defeat, Dutton did the opposite. He was criticised for not regularly fronting the Canberra press gallery in the lead-up to the campaign and dubbed the ABC and Guardian 'hate media' in the final days before the poll.
The Young Liberals called out senior figures for demonising Chinese-Australians and exacerbating division related to war in the Middle East.
Frontbencher Jacinta Nampijinpa Price was criticised for declaring a Dutton government would 'make Australia great again,' echoing Trump's slogan just as the Coalition was trying to distance itself from the unpopular US president's policies and rhetoric.
'The Coalition must refrain from pursuing culture war issues and respect the intelligence of the Australian people by formulating nuanced, meaningful policy,' it said.
On promises to voters, the submission was equally downcast. It said major policies should be announced with more lead time and accompanied by sufficient costings detail. It criticised Dutton's signature plan for development of nuclear power in Australia, and the decision to oppose Labor's tax cuts.
'Coalition policies such as the promise to cut 40,000 public service jobs, Peter Dutton's refusal to stand before the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander flags, and a crackdown on 'woke' culture in schools all reinforced the perception of a party more interested in symbolic battles than addressing serious domestic and international issues,' it said.
The opposition leader, Sussan Ley, has commissioned Minchin and Goward to assess the loss, and ordered a second review into the Liberal party's structure.
One question being considered is how to boost female representation in Coalition ranks. The Young Liberals have called for a 2015 party review to be implemented, including an aspirational national target for 50-50 gender parity in parliament, but suggested Labor-style quotas could be required.
'Ultimately, the Liberal Party doesn't look like modern Australia. Australians notice, and it matters,' the submission said.
Submissions to the review were due by Friday, with a report expected by the end of the year.

Shock update on Palestinian mum granted Australian visa after she cheered on Hamas terrorist attack on Israel

The Albanese government has made a stunning backflip and cancelled the visa of a Palestinian woman who praised Hamas ' October 7 massacre, following claims of an 'immigration failure'. Mona Zahed, a chef and married mother-of-four who lives in Gaza, was initially granted a visa to come to Australia, despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcoming a report calling for applicants with extremist views to be barred from entering. Ms Zahed celebrated the terrorist attacks that claimed 1,200 lives on October 7, 2023. 'We woke up and got God's kingdom,' she wrote the day after the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, which also saw 251 people taken hostage by Hamas terrorists. In a now-deleted post, Ms Zahed shared a photo of terrified Nova music festivalgoers fleeing for their lives alongside an image of refugees fleeing the 'Nakba' or catastrophe in 1948, which established the state of Israel and saw the mass displacement of Palestinians. 'Praise be to Allah who has kept us alive to see this day,' Ms Zahed captioned the post, first reported by the Herald Sun. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed to Daily Mail on Friday night that Ms Zahed's visa had been cancelled, following widespread condemnation 'The Department has advised the office that the visa was cancelled today – the reasons have been communicated directly to the applicant,' he said. It comes after Mr Burke's office earlier said that the government 'is serious' about keeping hatred out of Australia. 'This is a serious issue; the government is taking it seriously. Questions were put to the department as soon as the minister's office became aware,' a spokesperson said. 'The government is serious in its view about not importing hatred and we set a higher bar when the purpose of someone's visit is a speaking tour.' The decision to cancel Ms Zahed's visa has been welcomed by Jewish organisations, which also called on the government to shut down gaps in the visa approval process. 'We trust that the relevant processes will now be tightened to prevent this sort of error being repeated and ensure the government remains consistent in its approach to these matters,' Executive Council of Australian Jewry president Daniel Aghion said. Zionist Federation of Australia chief executive Alon Cassuto added: 'While it's welcome news the visa has been cancelled, the fact an individual who openly glorified terrorism online was granted a visa to enter Australia in the first place is a glaring sign that our visa approval system is failing. 'The government must act with urgency to close these visa approval gaps and ensure our nation is not a safe harbour for hatred.' Ms Zahed, who wrote a cookbook while living in a displacement tent in southern Gaza called Tabkha: Recipes from Under the Rubble, had been supported by Melbourne-based artist Matt Chun. Last month, Mr Chun revealed that his partner Tess Cullity, who published the cookbook, had been 'working alongside human rights lawyers to secure safe passage for Mona and her family from Gaza to Wurundjeri Land' (Melbourne). 'Finally, against all odds, Tess has visas approved.' The couple helped raise almost $29,000 for Ms Zahed and her family. The artist also celebrated the Hamas terrorist attacks, sharing a picture of the Palestinian flag with the title 'land back.' The caption read: 'Power to the freedom fighters. Death to the occupation. Resistance by any means necessary. Liberation from the River to the Sea.' It comes just weeks after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed a report from Jillian Segal, the government's special envoy to combat antisemitism, which recommended screening visa applicants for anti-Semitic views. Opposition Home Affairs spokesman Andrew Hastie lashed the Albanese government over the initial 'immigration failure' of approving Ms Zahed's visa. 'If you support Hamas, if you support the slaughter of innocent men and women, you're not welcome in this country,' he told Sky News. 'It's binary. We have standards in this country, and we don't want people who support terrorism on our shores.' The ensuing conflict triggered by the events of October 7 has so far claimed the lives of over 55,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

Australian lawmaker convicted of rape quits moments before vote to expel him from Parliament

An Australian state lawmaker and convicted rapist, who is in jail awaiting his sentence, quit his seat Friday moments before a vote scheduled by his former colleagues to eject him. Gareth Ward, an independent member of parliament in New South Wales state, earlier refused to resign despite his July convictions by a jury for sex crimes against two young men. He failed in a legal bid Thursday to stop his peers taking rare action to expel him. Ward, 44, sexually assaulted a political staffer after a parliamentary event in 2015 and abused an 18-year-old at the politician's home in 2013. His sentencing on one count of sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of indecent assault is scheduled for September. Jailed lawmaker tries to stop ouster vote In a bizarre and unusual episode for Australian politics, Ward refused to resign even after his bail was revoked last week following the convictions. He has said he plans to appeal and to keep his seat from jail in the meantime, prompting derision from his peers. 'If you're convicted of some of the most serious charges, sexual assault in New South Wales, you can't sit as a serving member of parliament drawing a parliamentary salary,' state Premier Chris Minns told reporters Friday. 'How can you represent your community from behind bars in Cessnock?' Ward on Monday launched a legal challenge to an expulsion vote planned for Tuesday. The bid was dismissed by an appeals court Thursday, allowing a new parliamentary vote against him to be scheduled. Resignation comes as lawmakers readied to vote As lawmakers assembled to oust him from Parliament Friday morning — a measure expected to draw cross-party support — Ward wrote to the speaker of the house tendering his resignation. He would have been the first lawmaker to be expelled from the lower house of the state parliament in more than a century. Leader of the House Ron Hoenig told reporters it was 'shameful' that Ward had taken so long to quit. 'I would have thought being a convicted rapist is enough infamy without going down in history as both a convicted rapist as well as the first person in a century to be expelled,' Hoenig said. Expulsions from Australian legislatures are rare and only lawmakers in New South Wales and Victoria have ever exercised their powers to oust their peers by vote. The last lawmaker expelled from New South Wales' lower house for 'unworthy conduct' was in 1917. Constituents reelected Ward despite the charges Ward had held the seat of Kiama since 2011, first with the center-right Liberal Party and then as an independent after he quit the group when the charges against him emerged. A date has not been set for a byelection in his seat. His constituents reelected him in 2023, despite his 2022 suspension from Parliament awaiting trial. Ward's lawyer argued in the state's appeals court Thursday that the fact of his convictions alone did not automatically mean his conduct was unworthy. In a scathing decision rejecting his legal bid, the court ordered Ward to pay costs. The former lawmaker faces a prison term of up to 14 years. He did not comment publicly Friday. Ward was the state's minister for families, communities and disability services between 2019 and 2021. He served an eight-year term as a local council member before entering Parliament.

Australia urges Israel not to take military control of Gaza

SYDNEY, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Australia has urged Israel "not to go down this path", after Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel intended to take military control of Gaza. "Australia calls on Israel to not go down this path, which will only worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza,' Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement on Friday. Wong said permanent forced displacement was a violation of international law and repeated calls for a ceasefire, aid to flow unimpeded and for militant group Hamas to return the hostages taken in October 2023. 'A two-state solution is the only pathway to secure an enduring peace – a Palestinian state and the State of Israel, living side-by-side in peace and security within internationally-recognised borders,' she added. Australia has not yet joined Western allies such as the U.K., Canada and France in announcing it would recognise Palestinian statehood, opens new tab but has said it would make a decision "at an appropriate time", while escalating its criticism of Israel's actions. Wong's comments come in response to Netanyahu saying Israel intended to take military control of all of Gaza during an interview with Fox News. He said Israel wanted to hand over the territory to Arab forces that would govern it, without elaborating on the governance arrangements or which Arab countries could be involved. After a security cabinet meeting on Friday, Netanyahu's office confirmed a plan to take over Gaza City had been approved. A statement said the Israeli Defence Forces would prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones.
