Red Bull confirm another major F1 leadership change after Christian Horner exit
Red Bull have confirmed that new team principal Laurent Mekies will have "significantly reduced" responsibilities compared to predecessor Christian Horner. The Frenchman is the new man in charge at the Formula 1 team after the main Red Bull company announced Horner's exit last week.
Neither the team nor its parent company have offered any reasons for the sudden management change publicly. But long-serving adviser Helmut Marko has now confirmed that "various factors" were behind the decision, most notably the team's decline in performance.
"The decision was made by [chief executive of Red Bull corporate projects] Oliver Mintzlaff", the Austrian said of Horner's demise. "We informed Christian Horner of this on Tuesday in London after the Silverstone race.
"At the same time, we officially thanked him for these 20 years and for these eight World Championship titles. This was the result of various factors, but above all, the performance wasn't quite as good as it could have been."
Horner's position had long been under scrutiny, having lost the trust of Red Bull chiefs in Austria some time ago. He was protected by majority shareholder Chalerm Yoovidhya who gave the Brit his backing, until recently, which was the major change behind the scenes that facilitated the change of leadership.
Horner had served not only as team principal but also chief executive. Austrian Red Bull officials were understood to have been uncomfortable with the amount of power wielded by Horner after 20 years in charge.
Marko went on to confirm that, although Mekies also holds both TP and CEO titles, he will not be as omnipotent as Horner once was. "Fortunately, we were able to bring Laurent Mekies into the family. His responsibilities will be significantly reduced, with the main focus being on racing," he added.
Mekies has admitted that his main priority in his new role is to ensure that the team keeps hold of its star asset. Max Verstappen has been strongly linked with a move to rivals Mercedes – speculation which has only intensified since Horner's exit.
And the new chief is focused on making Red Bull as competitive and attractive as possible to give them the best chance of convincing the Dutchman to stay. Mekies said: "I'm sure Max wants a fast car and if we get him a fast car, I'm sure it's cancelling out all the other considerations.
"So really the focus is very much to try to get to know the team as quickly as possible in order to see how we can support, how we can build the next step of competitiveness in order to get a fast car and hence to make it an easy call for Max."

George Russell is closing in on a £30million-a-year, multi-season deal to stay at Mercedes, Mail Sport can reveal. Negotiations have accelerated over the last few weeks and a source close to the talks confirmed: 'All the main points have been agreed.' Finer details, such as the number of sponsor appearances Russell will undertake, are still to be ironed out. Mercedes have pushed for a conclusion ahead of the summer break that follows this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. But there may be too many obstacles for that to be accomplished by then, with Russell's management, supported by legal advisers, poring over the new contract. Mercedes have accepted that defending world champion Max Verstappen is staying at Red Bull for 2026. He would have been mad to move before seeing how new regulations coming in next season play out. And now that the Dutchman is 28 points clear of Russell following Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix, it is impossible for him to activate a release clause that relied on him being outside the top three in the championship by the time of the summer break. Verstappen, third in the standings to Russell's fourth, could still buy himself out of his Red Bull deal, which runs until 2028, but he is not even considering that. Nor are Mercedes. So Mercedes will stick with Russell and Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli. Mercedes are belatedly content that Russell is a suitable No1, having produced his most consistently impressive form this year. He notched a win, in Canada, and has outscored Antonelli 157 points to 63. Russell may have hoped for a salary closer to those of Verstappen and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton - each on about £60m a year. But their achievements, with 11 world championships between them, dwarf Russell's four race victories - for all his potential indicated by near-flawless displays in an often-tricky car. Nor does he have the mass global fan base of Hamilton, his predecessor as Mercedes' star driver (whom Russell beat in two of their three seasons together), and the relative limit of his commercial attractiveness to the brand and business is reflected in the terms he is being offered. Mercedes have told Russell, for example, that if he reduces his sponsor commitments it is fine but will be reflected in his pay. However, a salary of around £30m still puts him on a par with leading non-championship winning contemporaries such as Charles Leclerc at Ferrari and Lando Norris at McLaren. A multi-year deal is a vote of confidence in Russell from boss Toto Wolff, though it remains to be seen what freedom of he might have if he wanted to move from the Silver Arrow in the next couple of years.

Alexander Isak to Liverpool swap transfer plan takes a blow as £65m deal nearly done
Alexander Isak is still linked to Liverpool, but a potential move looks to have taken a huge hit with another big deal in the transfer market on the verge of completion Luis Diaz's imminent move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich looks to have thwarted any potential swap deal for Alexander Isak. Diaz, 28, looks set to move to Bavaria, after Vincent Kompany's side agreed a £65.5million deal for the Colombian. The reigning Premier League champions have been active buyers in the transfer market this summer, but Diaz's exit would be a substantial sale. Liverpool's spending approached the £300m mark after they wrapped up a £79m move for Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. That figure could rise still further after Isak told Newcastle he wanted to explore a move away from St James' Park, with Arne Slot's side at the front of the queue. However, Diaz's exit may put an end to recent suggestions that Newcastle could request Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez as part of a potential swap transfer for Isak. Recent reports from German outlet Bild claimed the Magpies were considering a move for Nunez after the Reds beat them to the signature of Ekitike. The Dutchman has also been impressed with how the 26-year-old has performed this summer. Slot said: "In Darwin's situation, he has trained really well and played a few good games for us already this pre-season. He was injured so we didn't want to take the risk. "It was also the same with Wata (Endo) — trained with us all week but we didn't want to take a risk with him either. It is part of pre-season, the boys need to get towards match fitness and that is a thin balance, a thin line sometimes. "In this situation we thought it was smarter for Darwin and Wata to sit it out today but I assume they will be with us when we are in Japan for the next game.' Nunez had been linked with a move to Napoli, but the Italian champions' recent signing of Udinese forward Lorenzo Lucca seemingly put an end to those rumours. Nevertheless, Liverpool are still understood to be interested in Isak, who is believed to have a price-tag of around £150m on his head. The Reds broke the Premier League transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m, but if they want Isak, they will have to surpass that figure significantly. If they met Newcastle's huge valuation, their spending would reach as high as £450m.
