Cubs select contract of RHP Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Iowa
ST. LOUIS — The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of right-hander Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-hander Nate Pearson to Iowa on Monday ahead of a four-game series against the Cardinals. Fulmer, 32, returns to the Cubs after going 3-5 with two saves and a 4.42 ERA in 58 appearances for Chicago in 2023. Fulmer missed the 2024 season after undergoing UCL revision surgery on his right elbow on Oct. 18, 2023. Fulmer, who was the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year with Detroit, had Tommy John surgery on March 27, 2019, and returned to the major leagues on July 27, 2020 , just after the start of the pandemic-shortened season. 'It took me a few months to get stuff and velo back,' Fulmer said about his first Tommy John surgery. 'Once I got all the game reps I needed, my stuff came back. So, I think we're getting on that timeline now where I'm feeling good, body's feeling great, no complaints, stuff's starting to come back a little bit and I'm really just excited.' Fulmer signed a minor league deal with Boston on Feb. 2, 2024, but did not play for the rest of the season. He allowed three runs on four hits in his lone appearance with Boston in April at Tampa Bay before the Red Sox designated him for assignment four days later. Fulmer inked a minor league contract with the Cubs on April 22 and went 1-0 with a 2.96 ERA in 24 1/3 innings over 15 games with Iowa. 'You know he's went through a lot, you know he's sticking with it,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'It's a sign of what you're made of, I think. It really is. I know moments like getting back to the big leagues are important, and they validate a lot of the hard work and a lot of the rehabs and a lot of the things like that. You're happy for guys like Michael who get a shot again.' Pearson was recalled from Iowa on Saturday, and allowed five runs on five hits and two walks in two innings on Sunday versus Seattle. Chicago (46-31) entered play Monday with a 3 1/2 game lead over Milwaukee and a 4 1/2 game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central Division. ___ AP MLB:

Missouri football lands No. 5-ranked in-state player, doubling number of commits in 2026 class
Missouri football is back on track on the recruiting trail. Four-star safety/linebacker Keenan Harris announced Friday that he has committed to Mizzou, instantly doubling the number of players pledged to the Tigers' 2026 recruiting class. Harris is heading into his senior year at St. Louis University High, making him the first in-state player to commit to Missouri in this cycle. He announced his decision to commit to Mizzou via his Instagram account. Recently, most recruiting news has been unfavorable for MU. Two players — safety D'Montae Tims and defensive lineman Anthony Kennedy — announced recently that they have backed out of their commitments to Mizzou. Advertisement That caused Mizzou's Class of 2026 to drop to just one committed player: Four-star, Pennsylvania-based quarterback Gavin Sidwar. Now, the Tigers are back to plural commitments ahead of a seemingly important couple months on the recruiting calendar. Harris, a St. Louis native, is the No. 5-ranked player in the state of Missouri in the Class of 2026, according to the recruiting service 247Sports' composite rankings. He is rated as the No. 33 safety in this cycle and the No. 365 player nationally. The early national signing period is still seven months away, so the Tigers still have some time to keep him on board. Harris, according to 247Sports, will officially visit Mizzou on June 20, which comes after visits to Oklahoma and Iowa on back-to-back weekends. Advertisement Because he appears to be able to play both safety and linebacker, he likely will be a good fit for Mizzou's 'Star' safety position — a hybrid role between the secondary and the defensive front that program standout Daylan Carnell has played for the past few seasons. Harris is listed at 6 foot 1, 210 pounds. He recorded 128 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions on defense for SLUH last season. He's a two-way player at the wide receiver position for the Billikens, and had 328 receiving yards and three touchdowns last season, too. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-Imagn Images With the commitment, Mizzou moved up 10 spots to No. 76 nationally in 247Sports' team recruiting rankings for this cycle. That ranks ahead of just Kentucky in the SEC, as the Wildcats are now the only team in the league without multiple commitments in this class. Advertisement Missouri and Florida each now have two pledges. No other SEC team has fewer than five. More: With 100 days to new season, how is Missouri football viewed, ranked around the country? More: Here's where Missouri basketball is going for its 2025-26 season opener But, the Tigers are expected to host nearly 30 players on official visits over the course of the next couple months. The commitments that come from that group will likely form the bulk of Mizzou's next signing class. That's not outside the recent MU recruiting trend. Last year, 11 of Mizzou's 17 high school recruits committed after June 10, 2024, with six pledging across June and July alone.
