‘Phishing, smishing and brushing': USPS warns against scams following uptick in mail crimes
The USPS is working to educate consumers on avoiding scams and preventing fraud as part of their Delivering for America plan to improve mail services and ensure the sanctity of the mail stream, according to Sherry Patterson, Postal Service strategic communications specialist. They partner with the United States Postal Inspection Service, the nation's oldest federal law enforcement agency, to understand the latest threats to the postal service and consumers, including mail-related scams and violence against mail carriers.
"We're taking an aggressive step to make the delivery of mail and packages more secure and reliable," said Patterson. "The 10-year Delivering for America plan is a $40 billion investment aimed at modernizing and revitalizing a postal service to create a high-performing, financially stable organization capable of serving this nation for generations to come."
Mail-related scams often come in the form of phishing emails, texts or the delivery of packages that attempt to steal personal information. Smishing is a type of phishing that is attempted through SMS or text messages that typically include a link to check a package's tracking status or request additional information to deliver a package. These texts are almost always scams, as USPS does not send unsolicited texts and never sends links by text message.
Brushing occurs when someone receives an unsolicited package containing a low-cost item and is intended to inflate the appearance of sales and product reviews, according to U.S. Postal Inspector Brook Robinson. When an individual receives the package, it may mean their information has already been stolen and fake reviews of the product are being made in their name.
"If customers receive brushing packages, is important to report them to (the U.S. Postal Inspection Service) and make a plan to protect your personal data. If you receive an unsolicited item, you may keep it, throw it away, or return to sender," said Robinson.
Brushing packages can also include a printed QR code that attempts to steal personal data when scanned. Robinson urges citizens to never scan QR codes that seem untrustworthy or click on links that are sent by someone they do not know or trust. He asks that individuals who receive USPS-related phishing, smishing or brushing attempts forward them to spam@uspis.gov or text them to 7726.
"Treat your personal information as if it were cash; think before you send it away," said Robinson.
Outside of cyberspace, mail theft still remains an issue for a number of consumers. Robinson recommends consumers not leave packages unattended, retrieve their mail regularly — especially checks arriving in the mail — and ask the local post office to hold their mail when leaving town.
However, consumers are not the only target of mail theft. After seeing an increase in violence against mail carriers and mail theft in 2023, USPS and the United States Postal Inspection Service launched Project Safe Delivery to protect postal workers and the mail they deliver. Nearly two years later, over 2,400 arrests have been made and the postal inspection service reports a 27% reduction in robberies. These efforts extend to protecting citizens from mail theft as well, with law enforcement making over 1,200 arrests for the crime in 2024, according to Robinson.
Through Project Safe Delivery, USPS raised the reward for information leading to the arrest of individuals who have robbed a mail carrier from $50,000 to $150,000. They also increased the reward for information identifying mail thieves from $10,000 to $100,000.
Currently, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service relies on forensic technology to track criminal activity and data analytics to monitor trends in mail-related crimes. But Robinson says Project Safe Delivery still has ambitious plans to improve its efforts going forward.
"We will continue to work with our local state and federal law enforcement partners to relentlessly investigate crimes with the postal nexus, and attain justice for victims," he said. "By the end of this year, we aim to enhance further our technological capabilities to combat postal crimes, like mail theft, mail fraud and violence against postal employees."

Jens Ludwig: Men like Jeffrey Epstein are everywhere and they almost always get away
As the Jeffrey Epstein case is back in the news, people are shocked by the depraved details and light punishment handed out. The real shock is that anyone is shocked. This behavior is everywhere. By one Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate, over 33 million American women have been raped at some point in their lives. To put that number into perspective, it's more than the entire population of Texas. Another 59 million women were subject to what the CDC calls 'unwanted sexual contact.' One in every three women in America have experienced 'noncontact unwanted sexual experiences,' a euphemism for events such as Epstein luring someone's teenage daughter into giving him a massage and then, once she was alone with him and felt trapped, forcing her to watch him masturbate in front of her. Young women are at highest risk of these predators. Nearly half of rape victims were first victimized by age 18; 1 in 7 was victimized by age 10. The consequences are devastating. Miami Herald reporter Julie Brown explained in a New York Times interview why she wound up doing so much of the reporting on the Epstein case: 'I became really interested in the fact that these girls' lives were essentially ruined, even if they had only gone to his house one time.' These sorts of men are everywhere. Because other high-profile types of violence such as gun crime are concentrated in high-poverty areas, it's tempting for families in affluent urban or suburban areas to think they're safe from all sorts of violence. They are not. Epstein-like predators can be found even in well-off communities like here in Hyde Park, home to the University of Chicago. And these men almost always get away with it. Around half of rapes are reported to the police. (One reason the figure is not higher is how retraumatizing it is for survivors to report and go through the criminal justice process). Only about 1 in 4 rapes that are reported to the police result in an arrest. Only about 15% of people arrested for rape get sentenced to prison. Doing the math implies that only 2 of every 100 rapists get sent to prison. Put differently, one of the most unusual things about the Epstein case is not that he got off lightly after his first arrest, but that he got sentenced to any time at all. The Epstein case itself is now history (setting aside the possibility of an Epstein-related cover-up). What lessons can we take away about how to protect young women in the future? New Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke should be commended for making the addressing of violence against women and girls a top priority for her office. A recent Tribune op-ed describes some of the many ways in which our current system fails victims: Most civil orders of protection go unserved, survivor services are inadequate and court data systems are so antiquated the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. It's long past time to fix this. But under our criminal justice system, there are, unfortunately, intrinsic limits to holding sexual predators accountable. Most of these crimes happen in the shadows, in private places without witnesses. In a justice system that requires evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, any case that comes down to 'he said versus she said' is stacked heavily in favor of the offender. This has a chilling implication for parents everywhere: The ability of the criminal justice system to protect your daughter largely ends once any man ever gets her anyplace alone. That means we must take prevention much more seriously than we have to date. We have no alternative but to do much of that prevention work in schools, since that's one of the few places where we can reach everyone. What does that look like? It involves, among other things, addressing distorted thinking that, in the wrong setting, can lead to sex offenses. For example, everyone struggles with 'mindreading' others. But this is particularly dangerous when men misinterpret nonresponsiveness or distress by others as assent. While everyone is prone to 'motivated reasoning' (interpreting events favorably to one's own interests), this is particularly dangerous when it leads men to minimize the consequences of their actions on others. School-based programs can help men recognize these thought patterns and prevent sex crimes. We might also revisit the rampant pollution of our culture with misogynistic content. By one estimate, fully 1 in 5 American men have watched 'rape porn,' a pernicious normalizing of sexual violence, often premised on the fiction that women who protest are actually 'into it.' The larger lesson we should be taking from the Epstein case, in other words, is: What parent of daughters can possibly feel good about raising them in this society? How one real estate startup is taking on record heat this summer
As brutally high temperatures bake the nation this summer, cooling is becoming increasingly critical across commercial real estate property portfolios. Landlords are balancing soaring demand with rising costs, putting energy efficiency front and center. The trouble is that most large building systems essentially run blind. Temperatures are set centrally, so they don't know if certain parts of the building are running too hot or too cold. That's why so many office workers sit at their desks wearing sweaters in the summer and then feel overheated in the winter. Now, new technology is taking on the challenge. Runwise, a New York-based technology company, invented its own hardware/software platform to eliminate overheating in large buildings. It recently expanded that to cooling. "We're trying to hit these climate goals, yet right in our literal building we're throwing money away every time you run a boiler when it doesn't need to run, you're wasting money and you're producing carbon emissions unnecessarily that really make nobody comfortable," said Jeff Carleton, co-founder and CEO of Runwise. The company combines future weather algorithms with a wireless temperature sensor network that speaks to a Runwise central control system. That control analyzes the data and then operates the system more efficiently. For example, a 100,000-square-foot building may have just one boiler, but it needs multiple temperature inputs. Runwise would put in 20 to 25 sensors, which take an average based on the user setting and future weather, and then figure out how often to run the boiler. The tech is now installed in more than 10,000 buildings across 10 states, with roughly 1,000 customers, including major real estate owner-operators such as Related, Equity Residential, FirstService Residential, MTA, Port Authority, National Grid, Rudin, LeFrak, UDR, Douglas Elliman and Akam. Runwise claims to have collectively saved more than $100 million in energy costs to date. The startup recently announced a $55 million Series B funding round led by Menlo Ventures, bringing its total funding to $79 million. Carleton said Runwise will use the additional funding to grow the business nationwide and, of course, to incorporate artificial intelligence into its systems. "It's only going to become more and more ingrained in what we build, as we collect data from more and more buildings and build more advanced models on how to run them more efficiently," he said. "We plan to use AI to continuously make our algorithms more efficient."

India tech giant TCS layoffs herald AI shakeup of $283 billion outsourcing sector
By Sai Ishwarbharath B and Haripriya Suresh BENGALURU (Reuters) -Indian outsourcing giant Tata Consultancy Services' decision to cut over 12,000 jobs signals the start of a broader AI-fueled trend that could end up eliminating around half a million jobs over the next two to three years from the $283 billion sector, experts said. While TCS pegged the move to shed 2% of its workforce to skill mismatches rather than AI-related productivity gains, experts viewed the largest-ever layoffs by India's top private employer as the beginning of things to come in the labour-intensive sector. Roughly 12,200 TCS middle and senior management jobs will be lost. The industry, which has played a crucial role in creating a middle class in India, is increasingly seeing AI being used for everything from basic coding to manual testing and customer support. The sector employed 5.67 million people as of March 2025 and accounted for over 7% of India's GDP. It has a huge multiplier effect due to the direct and indirect jobs it creates and the cars-to-homes consumption it drives in the world's fifth-largest economy. It has historically absorbed a majority of India's engineers but that will change as rising AI use ekes out more efficiencies and demands newer skills that many current employees lack, according to half a dozen industry veterans, analysts, and staffing firms. "We are in the midst of a massive transition that will transform white-collar work as we know it," said Silicon Valley-based Constellation Research founder and chairman Ray Wang, echoing other experts who warned that more layoffs are likely on the cards. The most vulnerable employees include pure people managers with minimal tech knowledge, those in charge of testing or identifying bugs and ensuring user-friendliness before delivering software to clients, and infrastructure management staff who provide basic tech support and ensure networks and servers are working well, experts said. "About 400,000 to 500,000 professionals are at risk of being laid off over the next two to three years as their skills don't match client demands," tech market intelligence firm UnearthInsight's founder Gaurav Vasu said, adding that about 70% of those layoffs would impact workers with 4-12 years' experience. "This (fear stemming from TCS layoffs) may hurt consumer demand for tourism, luxury shopping and even delay long-term investments such as real estate," Vasu said. TCS and its peers Infosys, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, LTIMindtree, and Cognizant collectively employ over 430,000 workers with 13 to 25 years of experience, according to staffing firm Xpheno. "At the moment, they may appear like the big fat middle layer," Xpheno's co-founder Kamal Karanth said. None of the IT firms responded to Reuters queries seeking comment. "With cost optimization being the key driver for new deal wins, clients are asking for productivity benefits - a trend which is also growing due to the rise in AI adoption. This requires IT firms to do more work with the same number of employees or the same work with fewer employees," Jefferies analyst Akshat Agarwal said in a research note. ADAPT OR PERISH TCS, which had more than 613,000 workers before the layoffs, said in its late July announcement it was gearing up to be "future-ready" by investing in new technologies, entering new markets, deploying AI at scale for its clients and itself, and realigning its workforce model. It did not answer Reuters queries on how many layoffs were tied to AI adoption and why it could not redeploy the affected employees. "This is very devastating news," said a 45-year-old, Kolkata-based TCS employee affected by the latest layoffs. "It is very difficult for people my age to get new jobs." Some others who are still at TCS fretted over its mediocre performance bonuses for senior employees in recent quarters, a new "bench policy" that limits the time somebody could be without a project regardless of personal circumstances or past performance, on-boarding delays, and the emotional turmoil caused by the layoffs. "All these developments have tanked the morale of mid-career folks like me," a Pune-based TCS employee said. The Indian outsourcing sector has been a key employment engine since the 1990s, offering upward mobility to millions of engineers. But revenue growth has weakened recently as its clients, stung by inflation and U.S. tariff uncertainty, defer discretionary spending and demand better cost management. "The tech industry is at an inflection point, as AI and automation move to the very core of how businesses operate," industry body Nasscom said. During past tech revolutions, disruption was felt at the organisational level. "With AI, for the first time, the onus is on the individual to reinvent or re-skill themselves," former Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani said.
