Narendra Modi Strives To Realise Deendayal Upadhyaya's Vision
Last Updated: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fundamental governance philosophy reflects Deendayal Upadhyaya's thought and vision The 60th year of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya's historic lectures that shaped the philosophy of Integral Humanism is being commemorated at a time when a BJP's Prime Minister completes 11 years in office. Narendra Modi may not have met or heard Deendayal Upadhyaya, but he has certainly emerged as one of Upadhyaya's finest exponents, manifesting the latter's aspirations and hopes through his governance vision and action. In the course of a public life that spans more than four decades, Modi must have had the opportunity to mingle with many stalwarts of the movement who were moulded and shaped by Upadhyaya. Upadhyaya, the RSS pracharak, was deputed to the newly formed Jana Sangh, as Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee's understudy in 1951. He went on to shoulder the burden of laying the foundation of the new political party for the next 15 years, emerging as one of the tallest leaders of the Nehruvian and the immediate post-Nehruvian era. Modi, an RSS pracharak, was deputed to the newly formed BJP and for the next three odd decades, toiled for the new party, at various levels, till he scripted and charted out for it a historical course that is altering India's trajectory. Deendayal Upadhyaya established the Jana Sangh as an alternate pole in Indian politics, while Modi has been successful in positioning the BJP as the pre-eminent political party in India in three decades. These three decades were characterised and dominated by coalition politics and unstable governments which were pulled in various directions under the exigencies of political demands and short-term calculations. Absent, during these three decades, was a grand narrative of where India ought to be and of how to reach that position. Narendra Modi has comprehensively altered that. He has drawn a grand narrative sculpted and chiselled by the goal of 'Viksit Bharat" and of 'Amrit Kaal." Throughout Upadhyaya's tenure as general secretary, the Jana Sangh had advocated the necessity of India going nuclear. One of the first major decisions that propelled India to the status of a major nuclear power was Vajpayee's decision to go in for the nuclear tests in May 1998. The flagship 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan', launched by Vajpayee which saw a massive grassroots focus on education especially among the most marginalised, was another governance milestone that manifested Upadhyaya's philosophy and his hopes of empowering and equipping those left out and left behind. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya delivered his four lectures at Mumbai's Ramnarain Ruia College grounds on the philosophy of Ektaama Manava Darsana on April 22-25, 1965. These lectures eventually formed the bed-rock of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and later the BJP's political philosophy and action. It was for the first time that a political party, formed after Independence, discussed, debated and articulated a political philosophy which it sought to embody and express through a political programme. The philosophy spoke of unleashing India's civilisational powers, of making her self-reliant through her own strengths, of seeing her regain her rightful place as 'Viswamitra" (a friend of the world). A power that is benign but not powerless. Upadhyaya spoke of India seeking out her own all-around progress, based on her innate strengths and experiences. This national march towards prosperity, Upadhyaya's philosophical postulates insisted, had to be equitable, no one could be left behind. In Upadhyaya's lectures one discerns the hope of ushering in a Viksit Bharat and a Samriddha Bharat. In his concluding lecture, Deendayal Upadhyaya defined the goal when he said: 'Our goal is not merely to protect the culture but to revitalise it so as to make it dynamic and in tune with times. We must ensure that our nation stands firm on this foundation and our society is enabled to live a healthy, progressive and purposeful life…" Upadhyaya spoke of creating a Bharat, which 'will enable every citizen in its fold to develop his manifold latent potentialities…" Narendra Modi, as Prime Minister, in the last eleven years has been driven by these fundamental governance parameters. PM Modi has harped on collective national prosperity and strength. To realise a healthy and purposeful living has been the key-goals of his governance action. Narendra Modi's vision of 'Garib Kalyan", his governance philosophy of reaching out to the most marginalised, his unceasing emphasis on aatmanirbharta (self-reliance), his uncompromising championing of India's national interest and of her national security, his 'Panchamrit" foreign policy, which is a shift from a powerless and defensive 'Panchsheel"-driven foreign policy, his focus on securing and developing India's borders, his concept of 'Jan Bhagidari", his fulfilling the promise of 'One Nation, One Constitution", his vision of 'Ek Bharat, Sresht Bharat", his emphasis on 'Vikaas aur Viraasat", which means development along with the preservation and dissemination of the fundamentals of our national heritage and inheritance, fundamentally and intrinsically reflect Deendayal Upadhyaya's thought and vision. ‘Defence may be the wrong word': Shashi Tharoor points at ‘China factor' in Pakistan conflict
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday that 81 percent of Pakistan's defence equipment comes from China, making the country an 'impossible factor' to ignore in the conflict with Islamabad. Tharoor, who is leading a parliamentary delegation to the US to expose Islamabad's nexus with terror after India's Operation Sindoor, said that New Delhi-Beijing relations were making good progress till last month's conflict with Pakistan. 'I'm not going to mince my words, but we are aware that China has immense stakes in Pakistan," PTI quoted Tharoor as telling the representatives of think tanks at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. Tharoor pointed out that the largest single project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and that 81 percent of Pakistani defence equipment is from China. 'Defence may be the wrong word here. Offence in many ways……China is an absolutely impossible factor to ignore in what has been our confrontation with Pakistan,' Tharoor said. Shashi Tharoor told the gathering that India had seen good progress in its relationship with China after tensions since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. The Thiruvananthapuram MP added that during Operation Sindoor and the conflict with Pakistan, New Delhi saw a very different China in terms of its support for Islamabad, even on the UN Security Council. 'We have no illusions about what the challenges are in our neighbourhood, but I want to remind you all that India has consistently chosen a path of keeping open channels of communication, even with our adversaries. We have tried as much as possible to focus on development, on growth, on trade. Our trade with China is still at record levels. It's not that we are adopting a posture of hostility, but we would be naive not to be aware of these other currents around,' he said. The UN Security Council, on April 25, issued a press statement on the 'terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir' after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The statement had condemned the attack in "the strongest terms' but did not mention The Resistance Front as Pakistan, which is a non-permanent member of the council, got it removed with China's help. 'The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,' the press statement had said. Shashi Tharoor was asked about the Chinese military equipment that Pakistan used in the conflict during an earlier interaction at the Council on Foreign Relations. The delegation head said that when India saw what the Pakistanis were attempting to do using Chinese technology, for instance, the 'kill chain' that the Chinese specialise in, where the radar, GPS, planes and missiles are all linked together and they react instantly, 'we simply did things in a different way. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to hit' 11 Pakistani airfields, and "we wouldn't have been able to breach the Chinese-supplied air defences. 'So it's clear that assessments were taking place while the fighting was happening, and we were recalibrating our strategies in order to end as effectively as we were able to end,' Tharoor said.

'Buzdil Woh Hote Hain...': Did Shiv Sena MP Mimic Bilawal Bhutto's 'Rosesh Sarabhai' Speech?
Last Updated: Priyanka Chaturvedi said 'buzdil' means those who stage coups against elected governments, jail political leaders, and murder an elected PM to install an army general in power The internet wasn't done with memes linking Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to 'Rosesh Sarabhai' when politician Priyanka Chaturvedi mimicked Pakistan's former foreign minister in Belgium, unleashing another round of laughter. Mimicking Zardari's tone, the Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP repeated, 'Koun raat ke andhere mein hamle karte hai? Buzdil raat ke andhere mein hamla karte hai" (Who attacks in the dark? Cowards do). Chaturvedi added that in context to Zardari's speech after India's Operation Sindoor, she'd like to explain what 'buzdil" means. '…buzdil (coward) means — those who stage coups against elected governments, jail political leaders, and murder an elected prime minister to install an army general in power," she said. The parliamentarian further stated that the same army general who assumed power initiated radicalization in Pakistan, undermining the constitution and destroying Jinnah's vision. She also ridiculed the Pakistani delegation, noting that Pakistan has been trailing India even after more than 70 years since their separation. 'A delegation is coming after us, and you all know which one that is. They have been chasing us and refuse to let go. We left them in 1947, but they haven't stopped following us," she said. 'They'll be arriving in a few days. The person leading this delegation… I say all this only to put in context what India stands for, what we need to expose, and why we are here," Chaturvedi added. Interestingly, Pakistan delegation's arrival in the United States did not go down well with some of the politicians. Pakistan Delegation Gets Earful In US US Congressman Brad Sherman advised a Pakistani delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday to make every effort to eliminate the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad from the region and protect religious minorities in their country. In a social media post on X, Sherman highlighted the importance of combating terrorism, specifically mentioning Jaish-e-Mohammad, responsible for the 2002 murder of Daniel Pearl. Sherman emphasized to the delegation the critical need to address terrorism, pointing out that Pearl's family still resides in his district. He urged Pakistan to do everything possible to eliminate this dangerous group and fight terrorism in the area. In January 2002, Daniel was abducted by jihadi terrorists while on his way to meet Pakistani religious cleric Mubarak Ali Gilani in Karachi for what he believed would be an interview. Why Is Bilawal Bhutto Being Trolled In India & The 'Sarabhai' Connection Last month, Zardari addressed the Pakistani Assembly regarding India's Operation Sindoor, which involved a targeted overnight military strike on terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). These strikes were a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 people, primarily tourists. Zardari intended to question India over Operation Sindoor with his 'Kon raat ke andhere me hamle karte hai…" speech. The address may have found resonance in Pakistan considering the tension with India, but for fans of Indian sitcoms of early 2000s, the speech was a fodder for memes. The speech itself may not be considered a powerful one. It was Zardari's tone, voice modulation, and exaggerated delivery style that fans thought was similar to 'Rosesh Sarabhai' from the popular show 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai'. This then ignited a trail of memes, videos and 'ROFL' comments. Actor Rajesh Kumar, known for his iconic role as Rosesh Sarabhai, too jumped into the trend 'on public demand". Roshesh Sarabhai urf Rajesh Kumar actually did the Bilawal Bhutto bit! 🤣 — Vedvrat Shikarpur (@I_am_Vedvrat) May 25, 2025 Famous for his nasal voice, quirky poetry, and as the doted-upon son of Maya Sarabhai, Roshesh Sarabhai — played by Rajesh Kumar — added distinctive charm to the iconic show 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai'. Created by Aatish Kapadia and JD Majethia, the series quickly became popular due to its clever writing, memorable characters, and sharp satire on Indian upper-middle-class families.
