Certain slower-selling cars don't get the respect they deserve, whether due to styling, the type of vehicle, or brand image. Hyundai Ioniq 6
The Ioniq 6 is an electric sedan that does almost everything right. It's sporty and fun to drive, yet it's also comfortable and has a smooth ride over rough dips and potholes. Inside, you'll find a well-built interior that's easy to use. The Ioniq 6 touts a long EPA-estimated range of up to 342 miles. It's also one of the quickest-charging EVs on the market when using a powerful fast-charging machine.
The electric Hyundai's drawbacks are mostly minor, with one big exception. Its styling isn't for everyone and attracts attention for good and bad reasons. However, the upcoming 2026 model has updated styling that's easier on the eyes.

Honda Ridgeline
The Ridgeline could be an ideal truck for you depending on your priorities. If you plan on frequently towing heavy loads and tackling serious off-road trails, then other midsize trucks like the Ford Ranger would be a better fit. But if not, you should consider the Ridgeline. It's more comfortable, has more passenger room and handles better than its rivals.
The Ridgeline's towing capacity is certainly good enough for most uses, such as pulling a small camper trailer or toy hauler. It also has clever features like a lockable in-bed trunk and a tailgate that folds down or swings to the side. Its bed is large enough for 4-foot-wide plywood sheets without resting them on the wheelwells.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Mitsubishi doesn't sell as many vehicles as giant brands like Chevrolet or Toyota. But the Outlander PHEV is surprisingly capable and versatile. It's a plug-in hybrid SUV that offers three rows of seating and standard all-wheel drive. If you charge regularly, trips to the gas station will be rare thanks to the Outlander PHEV's lengthy 38-mile electric range. When the battery runs low, you'll get a respectable 26 mpg combined.
With the third row folded down, the Outlander PHEV offers lots of cargo space. When it's up, you'll have room for seven passengers, but the third row is only large enough for kids. Its starting price isn't low because it's a plug-in hybrid, but the Mitsubishi comes well equipped, and the top SEL trim level is quite luxurious.

Toyota Crown
The Crown is a relatively new Toyota that turns heads with its distinctive design. Its styling is similar to a sedan's, but the Crown has a raised ride height that's more like a crossover SUV's. Oh, and it's a hybrid too. The base engine is a fuel sipper that gets an EPA-estimated 41 mpg combined. The optional Hybrid Max engine produces an impressive 340 horsepower for quick acceleration, but fuel economy dips to 30 mpg combined.
Inside, the Crown has a pleasing interior with large display screens, spacious seating and a comfortable ride. But all this comes at a cost. The Crown is pricey for a non-luxury hybrid sedan, especially the top Platinum trim that has the Hybrid Max engine.

Genesis G90
The G90 has everything you want in a large, lavish sedan except for brand cachet. Genesis is still relatively new in the luxury world, but its vehicles, especially the flagship G90, shouldn't be overlooked. This South Korean sedan touts style, power, exceptional comfort, and an opulent cabin with superb fit and finish. Some rivals offer the same but require an arm and a leg for payment. And you're mistaken if you think the G90 skimps on features.
The top 3.5T E-Supercharger version doesn't offer any optional features because it comes equipped with many features, including many that usually cost thousands more than they would on a luxury rival. The most notable ones include front and rear massaging seats, a 26-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, a massive package of advanced driver aids, and an air suspension that scans the road ahead so it can adjust to road imperfections.

Dear Alex, I want to replace my 2013 Audi Q5 with a fully hybrid or battery electric vehicle, but I don't want anything Chinese or American. It needs to be narrow, with easy access (we are both in our mid-80s). I'd prefer not to have to use a touchscreen while driving, but parking sensors are a must; a 360-degree camera would be nice, as would a small turning circle. The car should also cost below the £40,000 'luxury tax' VED threshold. I drive mostly short journeys with the occasional 200-mile round-trip. What do you suggest? – DH Dear DH, Your Audi is 1,898mm wide, excluding the door mirrors. My first thought to replace it is the Hyundai Kona Electric. Granted, it won't quite have the premium feel you're used to, but it is one of the most common-sense electric cars at the moment, which is why it ticks so many boxes for you (and why it's one of my favourites). None of the major controls requires you to use the touchscreen; all are accessed via proper, physical buttons, which makes it easy to use on the move. A comfortable ride and a roomy interior mean it's easy to live with, too, while a real-world range of about 250 miles means the 65kWh model should cope with your longer round trips without the need for charging en route. And its maximum width is 1,825mm. You'll stay below the £40,000 tax threshold, too; every Kona Electric costs less than £40,000, although the N-Line S and Ultimate at £39,450 are pretty close to the threshold; even adding optional metallic paint will take you over £40,000. If you'd prefer a hybrid to a fully electric model, look at a Toyota C-HR. Again, most of its controls are physical, which makes it easy to use, while at 1,795mm without mirrors it's narrower than the Kona. What's more, the C-HR comes with Toyota's excellent reliability record and its whopping service-activated warranty, available for up to 10 years. Again, you'll need to avoid the options list if you consider one of the top-spec models, as they stray too close to £40,000 for comfort; you'll also need to avoid the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version for the same reason. Staying with hybrids, the Honda HR-V is similar in size and shape to the C-HR (a similar width, too), with a slightly more upmarket interior. It's comfortable and smooth to drive, the only real downside being a slightly vocal powertrain. Inside, there are proper rotary dials for the climate control and physical controls for almost everything else, although the touchscreen takes a bit of learning. On the plus side, it's cheaper to buy than the C-HR, so you stand less of a chance of exceeding the £40,000 threshold. However, bear in mind that the three-year warranty is nowhere near as good as Toyota's or even Hyundai's – however, given Honda's extremely good reliability record, that's probably not as much of an issue as you might think.

Auto-parts giant files for bankruptcy
By A car parts supplier pointed its finger at the Trump administration's tariffs while filing for bankruptcy. Marelli, a Japanese-based car parts manufacturer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, citing tariff-related pressures that added to its years-long financial troubles. The parts maker, which supplies components for Nissan and Stellantis , is considered a bellwether for the global auto industry. It employs 40,000 workers across plants in the US, Europe, and Asia . Marelli said it had already been navigating a challenging landscape of supply-chain bottlenecks and labor shortages following the Covid-19 pandemic. But in a court filing, CEO David Slump wrote that rising global tariffs became a tipping point this spring. 'Marelli was severely affected by tariffs due to its import/export-focused business and the imposition of tariffs specifically against automotive manufacturers and suppliers,' Slump wrote in the court filing. In the Wednesday filing, the company said it secured $1.1 billion in financing from lenders, a deal that will allow it to keep factories running and maintain customer orders. Around 80 percent of Marelli's creditors have agreed to support the plan, which includes eliminating all of its secured debt. 'This process will allow us to strengthen our business,' Fernando Vivanco, the company's chief communications officer, told 'This filing has no impact on our business or how we serve our customers. Marelli will continue to fulfill orders as usual and this process will not result in any changes to our relationship with customers, including contacts, billing or other support processes.' Still, the bankruptcy highlights how quickly trade policy shifts can destabilize even massive suppliers — and it places new scrutiny on Marelli's biggest clients. Nissan, America's fifth most popular car brand in the US in 2024, once owned more than 40 percent of Marelli's shares and remains heavily reliant on the supplier. But the automaker is under enormous financial stress of its own. In November 2024, executives started raising alarm, saying the brand only had '12 to 14 months' of cash to survive , according to the Financial Times. The company said it was struggling to keep up with increasingly popular Chinese manufacturers. Nissan's cars — which rely on older, less reliable parts — have continued to lose global market share. Moody's, a credit agency that evaluates a company's loan-worthiness, sunk Nissan into 'junk' status , before the company was forced to oust its CEO. Stellantis, which also briefly owned Marelli, is also facing pressure. The automaking conglomerate — which owns legendary Detroit-based brands Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram — reported a 70 percent drop in profits last year . It also sacked its top boss. Marelli's bankruptcy could complicate matters for both automakers as they face pressure to modernize their vehicle lineups and defend global market share. The filing is the latest giant move from car companies that rely on American sales. GM just announced that it is spending $4 billion to rejig factories in the US. The company previously said it was facing $4 to $5 billion annual costs in tariffs.
