The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon Twins Could Wind Up with a Hyundai Triplet

Yahoo21-03-2025
Well, here's one we didn't have on the bingo card: Hyundai and General Motors are reportedly exploring a partnership that could potentially see some of GM's pickups sold as Hyundai products. And not just overseas; the H-branded trucks could even be sold in the United States.
Reuters reports that Hyundai is pursuing GM's midsize trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, in hopes of selling Hyundai-branded versions of them. In return, the General would allegedly get two of Hyundai's commercial electric vans to sell as GM products. The deal is also reported to involve joint purchasing, the development of computer chips, next-generation batteries and battery materials.
The report also claims Hyundai is pursuing GM's full-size pickups like the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, but it says GM hasn't put those mega-sellers on the table yet. (Color us unsurprised.) What does seem to be sure, though, is that these talks of partnership are real: GM said in a statement to Reuters that 'Both companies continue to explore potential areas of collaboration,' while Hyundai said that it's exploring deals 'across key strategic areas.'
Documents that Reuters said it reviewed claim that Hyundai would initially produce vans in South Korea to be sold by General Motors in North America, but would localize production of said vans by 2028. The details of the pickup partnership are murkier, and Reuters's source claimed it would take longer to finalize any deal concerning Hyundai getting a piece of GM's truck business.
Why is GM putting its trucks up on the trading block? Well, its van situation is far from healthy right now, with the mega-old Chevy Express and GMC Savannah being the best it can muster aside from the awkward-looking, giant BrightDrop. Meanwhile, Hyundai has brand-new electric vans ready to go in multiple segments that GM could use to better compete in the commercial business.
There's one other angle GM is purportedly pursuing here, too, which is the Hyundai Creta sold in other markets. The report claims GM is interested in a rebadged version of this compact SUV, and hopes to sell it in markets like Brazil.
What's most intriguing for the U.S. market, however, remains the possibility of Hyundai versions of the Colorado and Canyon. The Santa Cruz is the only pickup Hyundai has in its U.S. lineup today, and that competes in the even-smaller compact segment against the Ford Maverick. It's a unibody design focused on lifestyle customers, whereas the GM midsizers would give Hyundai a proper body-on-frame entry. Where things could get extra spicy is if the deal includes special models like the Colorado ZR2 ‚ but consider that idea firmly in speculation territory for the time being, as we await further details from this budding tie-up.

Asia markets set for muted start as investors assess S&P 500's four-day losing streak

Asia-Pacific markets were poised for a muted start to the day as investors assessed the four-day losing streak for the S&P 500, led by declines in tech stocks. Investors in the region are awaiting India's HSBC Composite flash purchasing managers' index reading for August, which provides an early snapshot of the performance of the private sector economy, expected later in the day. Economists polled by Reuters expect it to come in at 60.5, compared to 61.1 in the month before. Japan's Nikkei 225 was set to open flat, with the futures contract in Chicago at 42,880 while its counterpart in Osaka last traded at 42,820, against the index's Wednesday close of 42,888.55. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was set to start the day lower, with futures tied to the benchmark at 8,902, compared with the index's last close of 8,918. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index is slated to open flat with futures tied to the index at 25,168, compared with the HSI's last close of 25,165.94. U.S. equity futures were little changed in early Asia hours. Overnight stateside, two of the three key benchmarks ended the session in declines as tech stocks dragged the market lower. The broad market S&P 500 index slipped 0.24% to close at 6,395.78, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost 0.67% and settled at 21,172.86. Wednesday marked a fourth day of losses for the S&P 500 and a second negative session for the Nasdaq. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was the outlier, adding 16.04 points, or 0.04%, and settling at 44,938.31.

Tesla (TSLA) Expands Model Y Lineup in China Amid Intensifying EV Competition

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is one of the . On August 19, Reuters reported that Tesla has started accepting orders for its new Model Y L in China. As shown on the website, the starting price of the new model is 339,000 yuan ($47,184). The Model Y was initially launched in 2020, which moved on to become the world's best-selling car three years later. The model has since lost momentum, partly due to competition from rivals and partly because of weakened market demand for electric vehicles. These conditions led Tesla to introduce a new version of the Model Y in Asia Pacific markets in January. The company then registered plans with Chinese authorities for the new Model Y L in July. India curbs solar power output to keep grid stable amid low demand, ministry says

By Sudarshan Varadhan and Sethuraman N R SINGAPORE/NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India is curbing solar output during periods of low demand to keep its power grid stable and to ease congestion in power lines as green energy supply rises, its Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) told Reuters. Congestion in power lines due to some new plants coming into operation ahead of schedule and delayed transmission projects have also forced power output curbs, also known as curtailment, the MNRE said in an emailed response to questions late on Monday. The curtailments are the latest setback to India's renewable power developers, who are increasingly languishing without supply contracts as demand for power slows. The National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) said in a July 24 letter to the ministry that solar power producers in Rajasthan, the top green power producing state, were facing prolonged and frequent curtailments, which had risen to 48% of output during peak generation hours. The producers have lost more than $26 million in revenue since April due to the curbs, NSEFI said in the letter reviewed by Reuters. NSEFI, whose members include the green energy arms of Indian conglomerates Adani and Tata, Amazon Web Services, Dutch investment firm SHV and Malaysia's Gentari, said curtailments undermined project viability and future investments. "Projects in the state had been deferred by 18-20 months to accommodate for the delays in the transmission system, but are still unable to be commissioned due to even further delays," NSEFI said. NSEFI has asked the government to accelerate transmission and battery storage projects, some of which face up to two years of delay. The federal power ministry has said it is fast-tracking interstate transmission lines to support renewable energy. BEYOND RAJASTHAN While Rajasthan is the worst affected by curtailments, other major green energy producers such as the southern Tamil Nadu state, and Gujarat and Maharashtra in the west are also curbing output, according to four industry officials and analysts. Data compiled by Tamil Nadu's Renewable Energy Producers Association showed solar output was 10% lower than forecast in the quarter ended June. J Radhakrishnan, a spokesman for the Tamil Nadu energy department said solar was being curbed as a "last resort" measure, and that coal power was also being curtailed amid low demand. India's renewable energy generation, mainly solar, rose at a record pace in the six months ended June as previously awarded projects came online, while overall power generation growth was largely flat compared with an increase of nearly 6% in 2024. However, solar projects awarded in the three months ended June fell 75% annually and tenders for new projects declined 65%, according to clean energy consultancy Mercom. The decline reflects a "temporary recalibration rather than a slowdown," MNRE said, adding that bids were being issued in line with national targets and demand. Government data shows the usage rate of solar capacity fell to 21.4% in May and 19.5% in June. The MNRE said some of it was due to lower irradiance, adding it expected capacity utilisation of 21%–25% range from February to June in the future.
