Alex Yale spent years in the corporate world before launching a cleaning brand, Uncle Todd's. He listed his first product, septic pods, on Amazon, and then focused on getting into retail stores. He says he believes in building businesses around everyday products that solve problems. Alex Yale does more than $1 million in annual revenue selling septic pods and other cleaning products. A winding career path that began in consulting at Deloitte, featured years at Facebook, and included a stint at Amazon aggregator Thrasio, a unicorn-turned-cautionary tale, eventually landed him in the business of cleaning products. At Thrasio, Yale managed a pet odor eliminator brand called Angry Orange. Once it was clear that Thrasio's rocketship trajectory had stalled, Yale left in March 2023, confident that he had the skillset and network to launch a business of his own. "The first thing I did was sit down with these suppliers that I had built a really good relationship with over time, who were supplying the Angry Orange products," Yale told Business Insider. He was particularly interested in the products that used bacteria and enzymes to clean stains, and wondered what other applications there were. "I just did a bunch of research to understand what types of consumer products I could actually adapt or develop with these enzymes and bacteria in mind, and then looked on Amazon to see what companies were doing it already and could I do it better, cheaper, or in my opinion with better packaging?" The first product he launched under his brand, Uncle Todd's, was a package of 12 septic pods. He started on Amazon, which is "the place where I can launch a product the fastest and with the least amount of friction," he explained. But his intention all along was to get his product in retail stores. "My focus is really to build a much larger consumer product brand, and Amazon is just a small piece of that puzzle," he said. "A lot of consumable and cleaning products in my category are still purchased in Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc., and so I think it'd be shortsighted just to look at the opportunity size from a digital, Amazon-type of marketplace." Building a seven-figure business selling everyday products Yale's decision to sell septic pods and other cleaning products was influenced by many factors. One was his connections in the space. He also wanted to sell a consumable product. "Selling a one-time product that you can't get repeat purchases on is really difficult," he explained. "My hope is that if somebody buys it once, that in six months or 12 months they're going to come back and buy it again, and I don't have to keep acquiring that customer every single time." Another factor was the total addressable market. Yale used software tools like Helium 10 and JungleScout to confirm that there was strong demand for his type of product online. But a less obvious component of his product selection strategy is leaning into everyday, borderline boring items. "Sexy, fad-driven products — products that have any kind of risk of technological obsolescence, like in six months there will be a faster, cheaper, lighter, better version — they're sort of flash in the pan," he said. "If you hit it right, you can grow your brand and expand it really quickly and grow sales, but they burn hot, they burn bright, and they burn out." He's playing the long game by selling products that solve problems. "If you start a brand and you're chasing a fad, you might have a couple of great years, but over time, your sales are going to slide with the fad," he said. "So, if you're looking for a medium- or long-term exit from a brand, you might make some quick money, but there's not going to be a lot of equity that you're building into a brand if the sales start to decline after 12, 18, 24 months. I'm trying to build a brand that will be worth quite a bit and have some staying power, and I feel like you do that by solving everyday problems with everyday consumers." Yale did seven figures in Amazon sales alone between July 2024 and July 2025, according to a screenshot of Uncle Todd's sales dashboard viewed by BI. His products are in more than 3,000 retail stores, including Walmart, Home Depot, and Piggly Wiggly. He also runs a second Amazon brand, Flip-It! Cap, which he acquired in October 2023. It's more than just product selection that has contributed to his business success. "I think at the end of the day, the most important thing is selling a good product at a good price point," he said. "A lot of e-comm entrepreneurs think so much is in the marketing and the advertising and the brand aesthetic that they forget about the core product performance — they almost overlook the quality of the product." If your product doesn't work, it won't last, no matter how many viral videos you create, said Yale: "You might hit it big on TikTok and see a whole bunch of sales, but then when people realize the product doesn't actually work or it doesn't solve a problem or it doesn't have the efficacy they're looking for, you're going to be as dead as quickly as you came alive." The future of the College Football Playoff has been a key topic of discussion all offseason. ESPN secured a six-year, $7.8 billion contract that ensures the network will remain the sole media rights holder of the event through the 2031-32 season in March of 2024. But, whether or not the CFP stays at a 12-team model or expands has been one of the hot button issues of college football. After plenty of back-and-forth and a spring and summer full of discussion and disagreements, the Big Ten has suddenly introduced a radical new idea for the CFP's future. According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Big Ten has floated the idea of massive expansion to the College Football Playoff that could bring the postseason field to 24 or 28 teams. While Thamel reports that the idea is in its very early stages, the proposal eliminates conference title games and offers a large number of auto bids for all four power leagues, sources said. In the proposed 28-team CFP model, the Big Ten and SEC would each get seven auto bids while the ACC and Big 12 would each receive five. There would be two auto bids for the non-Power 4 conferences and two at-large teams. The 28-team format would put 20 playoff games on campus, which would accentuate the success of that from last year's CFP. The CFP Committee would seed the field and pick the at-large teams. Per Thamel, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti ran the idea by his conference Wednesday, sources said, and that it has begun being shared by others. In order to expand the playoff before the 2026 season, the expectation is that leaders need to reach a resolution before the end of this year. Momentum for a 16-team CFP format picked up steam throughout the spring, but leaders throughout college athletics haven't seen eye to eye on exactly how bids to a 16-team CFP would be awarded. The 5+11 model is supported by both the Big 12 and the ACC and it gained more support from the SEC after the league's spring meetings. The 5+11 model would include the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large bids. Another 16-team CFP model featured the Big Ten and SEC each receiving four automatic bids, the ACC and Big 12 receiving a pair of automatic qualifiers, one bid to the Group of 6 champion and then three at-large bids. The war on spam calls has finally begun As usual, the US government has moved with the speed of an iceberg to react to a problem. But they are finally taking action. Mobile providers are required to implement a new anti-spam software called Shaken. It isn't a perfect or final solution. Yet it will slow down the avalanche of calls everyone gets. Yes, those annoying spammers will continue to find ways to circumvent it — but the writing is on the wall: spam calls are ending. Consumer demand has finally gotten the attention of regulators. It'll be 99% gone within 20 years, maybe even 10. You are legally entitled to $500 every time a spam caller calls you after you've asked them to stop calling. Additionally, don't listen to that 'Press x to be added to the Do Not Call list'. Spammers use that to determine if you are a human who will answer — then sell that information to other spammers. I just thought of three and only one of them is still active — but just barely. Oddly enough, I sat in front of a famous YouTuber in a college class (I'm not naming him because I don't want to put him on blast). We even played Call of Duty together online once or twice a week. He had every opportunity to tell me he was YouTube famous but never did. I found out why when I stumbled across his already-dead channel. He had a famous channel with him and his girlfriend. It was one of those cutesy couple's vlog ('We Finally Moved in Together!!'). The channel was super feminine which is probably why he didn't tell me. As soon as they broke up, that gravy train crashed. His content mill broke and the followers all turned on him and blamed him for the breakup. Internet fame is fleeting. For all their controversy, Logan and Jake Paul made brilliant pivots into other venues. Both are making a fortune with 'professional' boxing. Logan now has a podcast that is wildly popular. And look — it isn't lost upon me that I'm in a similar predicament. I make my living by having visibility online and surviving the algorithm gauntlet. A platform is either dying or getting more competitive. To those like me, diversify and plan for your future. The tides of internet notoriety come and go without mercy. Ageism is even worse online than it is in the office. The vast majority of cryptocurrencies Crypto Bros are better at marketing their crypto than understanding its actual purpose. I know several people who have gone from crypto evangelists to complaining about losing money on those investments. These idiot collectives retweet each other's content to growth hack the algorithm. Then, millions of views later, a bunch of suckers to buy in. Crypto is a religion that spawns its insufferable zealots. The moment you say anything wrong about Poodlecoin, it summons a bunch of yappers to your comment section. Most of them aren't even in it because they believe in the product. It's all for a quick buck. Mark my words — 95% of these cryptos will be gone or flirting with zero in 20 years. There will be a trail of tears along the way. The moment regulators drop the hammer, it's going to smash half of these junk currencies. Invest in an index fund. I will continue to pound the war-drum: buy the S&P 500 Index fund. If you'd bought $8000 in 1980, it'd be worth $1,000,000 today. By the time randoms are telling you to buy something, it is already too late.
