Suspect sought in machete attack outside Winnipeg convenience store: police
The Winnipeg Police Service is searching for a suspect after an 18-year-old man was attacked outside a Winnipeg convenience store earlier in July.
Around 4:30 a.m. on July 13, police were called to the 800 block of Selkirk Avenue where they found the victim lying outside a convenience store. Police noted he was bleeding profusely and suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition and has since been upgraded to stable condition.
Officers contained the area and spoke with people at the scene. Investigators determined the victim, who was with a teenage girl at the time of the attack, approached a man riding a bicycle to ask for money for the store.
Police allege that without warning, the suspect attacked the victim with a machete and then rode off on his bike.
A person in a car stopped to help and called 911. Another person also stopped and provided medical care until the arrival of paramedics.
Police describe the suspect as a man on a BMX-style bicycle. He had a black backpack and was wearing a ballcap that may have had a white NY Yankees logo on the front. He was last seen heading down Selkirk Avenue toward Main Street.
The major crimes unit is investigating. Anyone with information, including video surveillance, is asked to call police at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Rewards of up to $3,000 could be offered by Info-Crime for information leading to the arrest of a suspect(s).

Police warn about social media app being used by potential predators to exploit children
Police are issuing a warning to parents about a social media app based out of Singapore, called Likee, that predators could use to exploit children. The warning comes after South Simcoe police say a local parent reported earlier this month their child had been involved in recording and sharing explicit material of herself after an unknown individual contacted her online through the app. According to police, the young girl had communicated with the suspect through Likee and was coerced to record herself engaging in sexual activity. Police say the situation then escalated. "Once the unknown individual received several videos, a demand was made for more videos to be sent. The unknown individual threatened the young person and told them that if they did not comply with the request for additional videos to be sent, the videos of the young person engaging in sexual activity would be sent to family, friends, and the school that they attend," the police service stated. Police say Likee has about 100 million users globally and doesn't allow private accounts or require a certain age to utilize. Additionally, the authorities say the organization or parent company of the app will not comply with Canadian court orders 'which drastically reduces the likelihood of investigations being successful.' Tips for Safety Police advise using a family share plan for cell services, which allows parents to set up a notification system that alerts them to any application downloads and gives parents the ability to accept or deny the request. Parents are encouraged to monitor all activity and content on their child's devices to ensure online safety, and to disable home-based WiFi during hours, like overnight, to ensure children are not online at a time when adult supervision isn't available. "Have frank and open discussions with children about online safety and the importance of not communicating with unknown individuals," police add. Finally, police urge parents and guardians to report any concerns or issues to the authorities immediately to avoid potential evidence being lost.

Vehicle mounts curb, driver blows 3x over legal limit: Barrie police
Police in Barrie arrested a woman accused of driving nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit and mounting a curb on Anne Street North Thursday night. According to police, the woman was found by officers walking away from her vehicle 'and appeared unsteady on her feet.' The officers spoke with the woman, who they claim was obviously impaired. Police say she was arrested and taken to the station where a series of tests were conducted, allegedly determining the 47-year-old woman from Alliston had a blood alcohol concentration well above the legal limit. The accused was later released from custody and will have to appear in court to answer to the impaired driving charge at a later date. As a result of the offence, her vehicle will be impounded for seven days and her licence was suspended for 90 days.
