16-yr-old Hoshiarpur shuttler Tanvi shines at US Open, bags silver
She is the youngest shuttler to reach the finals of the US Open competition before losing in the women's singles final to top seed and local favourite Beiwen Zhang. India's world No. 66 lost 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in 46 minutes, ending a run that featured some fearless performances as she beat players ranked Nos. 23, 40, 50 and 58 en route to the final.
Her performance helped her enter the league of top 50 players and a contract with IOS Sports and Entertainment.
Tanvi has multiple international medals to her name, including a silver medal in the Badminton Asia Youth Championships 2023, a gold medal in the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024, and a silver medal at the Senior National Championships 2023.
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has also applauded her. On social platform 'X', the CM said it was a historic and proud moment for Punjab.
Tanvi is part of the Indian squad for the Badminton Asia Junior Championship scheduled to be held in Indonesia from July 18 to July 27. She is on her way to join the national preparatory camp that is being held at the National Centre of Excellence, Guwahati, from July 4 to 15.
Her mother and coach, Meena Sharma said that the recent win had filled Tanvi with enormous confidence and she is now prepared to take on upcoming challenges with more grit.
'It is her hard work and determination that has seen her this far but her coaches have also extracted the best out of her', said Sharma, a badminton coach.
'Tanvi trained at Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy, Hyderabad, for four years where she got the opportunity to play some of the best talents. After COVID, she did not go back and practiced under my guidance', she added.
She revealed that for the US Open tournament, she was trained by Park Tae-Sang, Olympian PV Sindhu's former coach. 'She has her eyes set on the Los Angeles Olympics to be held in 2028', said Sharma.

Considered one of the greatest opening batters of all time, Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs at an average of 48.76 with 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries. He is the only batter to have scored three double centuries in men's ODIs and his 264 remains the highest-ever score by any player in the format. Rohit had led a dominant India to the final of the 2023 World Cup. However, while they were hardly challenged by any team throughout the tournament, India were thoroughly outplayed by Australia in the final and lost by six wickets, a result that Rohit admitted in later months took a big toll on him mentally and emotionally.

'Can you share Virat Kohli's number?': R Ashwin foils scam attempt by fake ‘Devon Conway' after IPL 2025
Ravichandran Ashwin recounted a strange episode post-IPL 2025, when he became the target of an unusual scam in which someone posed as Devon Conway. The veteran recalled the incident after a similar incident occurred involving Rajat Patidar, whose old SIM card was reassigned in Chhattisgarh, inadvertently leading to calls from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers to an unsuspecting new user. Ravichandran Ashwin recalls an incident when a fraudster asked for Virat Kohli's number.(PTI) Ashwin shared that he got a WhatsApp message from someone posing as his CSK teammate Devon Conway. The chat began innocently, with casual greetings and talk about MLC matches to make the story sound genuine. Since he didn't have Conway's number saved, he initially thought it was really him. Ashwin grew suspicious when the supposed Conway suddenly asked for Virat Kohli's contact number. He didn't want to create any misunderstanding with the real Conway and decided to share a different number instead. "After the IPL got over, one guy messaged me claiming to be Devon Conway, 'Hi buddy, how are you?' and I also responded that we'll stay in touch. You're playing in MLC; I'll watch the games and all that talk. He then asked, 'I've missed Virat Kohli's number, can you share Virat's number?' I thought Why is he asking Virat's number. I thought I should ask him, but I didn't want Devon Conway to misunderstand. Then I picked Virat Kohli's card and gave him a different number," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Ashwin bluffs the fraudster The veteran all-rounder revealed how the events that unfolded confirmed his suspicions, as he managed to outwit the scammer by cleverly calling their bluff. "Once I shared it, he replied, 'I've lost a few more numbers.' I asked him whose numbers, he responded, 'Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni.' I got suspicious and then asked him a question, 'I gave you a bat this year, how's that bat?'. He said the bat is amazing, and I've not even gave him any bat, he lied and I blocked him instantly,' Ashwin added about the encounter. Realising the scam, Ashwin later confirmed it by checking Conway's number on the CSK official WhatsApp group and went on to block the scammer's number.
