Acting Gauteng police commissioner's driver survives 'attempted hijacking'
Kekana said on Monday the driver noticed a suspicious BMW following him and came under attack as he was about to park the vehicle.
'The passenger in that BMW smashed the window with an iron rod, not knowing that the windows are protected. The driver had to defend himself, and the thugs dropped the firearm and ran away.
'That's what happened. It's under investigation,' he said.
Gauteng police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi earlier said police are investigating a case of attempted hijacking and malicious damage to property after a constable was attacked by unknown suspects on Monday morning.
She said it is reported the constable was driving a state vehicle around Westonaria when a blue BMW vehicle stopped next to him and smashed the driver's window with an unknown object.
'The constable swiftly reacted and fired shots, prompting the suspects to speed off, leaving a firearm behind, which was later discovered to be a toy gun. No injuries were reported and the police are on the lookout for the suspects,' she said.

The 41-year-old Richmond resident disappeared on July 13, after he was last seen leaving his home in his blue BMW. Stacey Lee Hector and her boyfriend, Wade van Reneen, both 39, have been charged with Pather's murder. In addition to murder, they face charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. It is alleged that the vehicle his body was found was allegedly stolen in the Goodwood area between July 12, 2025, and July 13, 2025. The suspects will be applying for bail in the Atlantis Magistrate's Court. Image: File Police spokesperson, Frederick van Wyk, confirmed Pather's body was found burnt beyond recognition in Melkbosstrand. 'The body of a male found was burnt beyond recognition. All leads were followed up on evidence found on the crime scene, and a possible person of interest was identified,' he said at the time. Pather was reported missing by his brother-in-law, and pictures of him and his vehicle were circulating across all social media platforms. Four suspects from Eastern Cape killed in shoot-out with Gauteng cops
'Neither worked for them: not their muti nor the prayers.' This is according to Gauteng police deputy commissioner Maj-Gen Fred Kekana, who said officers intercepted a group of alleged robbers while they were en route to rob a businessman about to bank a substantial amount of cash. Police were acting on information received from Crime Intelligence in the Eastern Cape. The Anti-Gang Unit was tasked with tracking them down. When police confronted the suspects' vehicle in Randfontein, on the West Rand, they came under fire. Officers returned fire, killing four men. A rifle and two pistols were seized on the scene. The vehicle had false number plates. Muti was found inside the vehicle, including on the seat, while the car's petrol cap bore this sticker: 'Prayer is the key.' Police kill four suspects in Gauteng armed robbery ambush
Gauteng police shot and killed four suspected robbers in Randfontein on Tuesday after a gunfight with officers from the Tactical Response Team. The police intercepted the suspects after the Eastern Cape police's Crime Intelligence Unit shared information that the group was planning to rob a businessman in Randfontein. The businessman was reportedly en route to deposit a large sum of money at the bank. Officers from the Tactical Response Team spotted the suspects' vehicle travelling on Ventersdorp Road. Gauteng police deputy commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana said officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which carried four suspects. 'The suspects opened fire on our members, and the team returned fire. All four suspects were fatally wounded,' said Kekana. Police seized rifles and pistols at the scene. They also found traditional muti inside the suspects' car, including on the seats. Police noted that the vehicle had false number plates. A sticker on the petrol cap read: 'Prayer is the key.' Commenting on the failed robbery, Kekana said, 'Neither worked for them, not their muti nor the prayers. They were doing something they shouldn't have, and even the prayers ended up helping the police.'
