Auto companies flag China's magnet supply risks
NEW DELHI: Raising an alarm over challenges in procuring rare earth magnets from China, the auto industry has told govt that the matter will lead to stoppage of production of certain models from this week, while heading to a complete shutdown by the middle of next month.
China has put the export curbs on rare earth magnets to ensure they are not used for making defence and weapon systems.
This threatens launch of many new models, apart from disturbing the entire value chain across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles. Companies at risk of production disruptions include, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia, Hero Moto, TVS, and Bajaj Auto.
Over the past month, auto companies discussed the matter with various govt departments to get clarity regarding the process to be adopted for obtaining the EUC (end-use case).
On suggestions of the ministry of external affairs (MEA), they also had a discussion with the embassy of China in India. However, there has been no solution so far.
The rare earth magnets are used for components like speedometers, electric motors, e-axles, electric water pumps, automatic transmission kits, speakers, sensors, and ignition coils in engines. Companies say an elaborate approval process has to be followed before the magnets can be procured, and a final approval from China's ministry of commerce is also required.

Heavy industries minister H D Kumaraswamy on Monday said govt is preparing to send a delegation of industry executives to China in two-three weeks to discuss the issue. Govt is working overtime to work out a solution to the issue, which began after the Chinese govt on April 4, imposed certain requirements in the export permit system for medium and heavy rare earth metals, its alloys, magnets and related products.
On duration of inventory Maruti has before any impact on production, the automaker said it submitted an import application and it would be difficult to give "very specific details" until it receives a response.
"It is not a restriction. It is an endorsement of end-use. In case there is an issue, we will inform all our stakeholders, including the stock exchange," Rahul Bharti, senior executive director, corporate affairs, said.
Bajaj Auto said the issue could have a "serious impact" on their EV production by July. The industry's warning comes even as delegations of industry body Siam and component makers ACMA plan to visit China "at the earliest" to expedite permissions to procure the magnets used across automotive applications, both in petrol, diesel engines and EVs.

Chinese AI surge shapes global landscape in Q1 2025: Report
New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): The rise of Chinese AI emerges as one of the key factors that drove the Artificial Intelligence landscape in the first quarter of 2025, according to a report by Artificial Analysis, an independent AI benchmarking and insights provider. The US leads across reasoning models, the top 4 places on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index are all taken by reasoning models from US labs. However, China currently leads non-reasoning models; DeepSeek V3 0324 is the leading non-reasoning model. Models from labs outside of USA and China have continually improved, but currently don't compete for frontier intelligence. The rise of Chinese AI Labs marked a notable shift in global competition. Chinese entities released models that rivalled US counterparts, particularly in open-weight models, with DeepSeek V3 0324 leading in non-reasoning categories. The report also highlights that AI continues to progress, with the help of leading labs like OpenAI, Google, and many others, consistently advancing intelligence, efficiency, and speed. While OpenAI's o4-mini (high) maintained a lead, models like Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro and xAI's Grok 3 rapidly narrowed the gap, intensifying competition. In the field of AI, reasoning models emerged as a significant frontier. These models, which 'think' through problems by generating intermediate steps before providing an answer, became widespread across major labs. This approach has delivered substantial intelligence gains, influencing how AI processes complex tasks. Artificial Analysis also discusses the efficiency and Mixture of Experts (MoEs) in revolutionising AI inference. Costs plummeted by over 32 times since September 2024, and more than 1000x since GPT-4's 2023 launch. This was primarily due to smaller models (including MoE architectures), optimised inference, and new hardware, making advanced AI more accessible Lastly, Multimodal AI saw significant advancements. Models became more capable of handling image and audio data natively. Image generation, exemplified by OpenAI's GPT-4o, achieved new quality benchmarks, while text-to-speech models improved significantly, offering more human-like dialogue. These trends collectively define a quarter of rapid evolution, increased accessibility, and a globally competitive environment in AI. (ANI)

Amazon racing to roll out AI chatbot Cursor amid employee pressure: Report
Tech major Amazon is in advanced talks to roll out an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Cursor, across its workforce, amid pressure from its employees seeking access to the popular AI chatbot, according to internal company communications reviewed by Business Insider. The report added, an Amazon HR manager who oversees the company's AI adoption told employees via messaging platform Slack that the company is working "asap" to integrate Cursor. Though they added that the deployment might take some time, as 'a few high priority security issues' to Amazon's tight security requirements. This move indicates a significant shift for the US tech major, which typically doesn't encourage its employees to use any external AI tools since the company provides its own AI coding assistant called Q and an internal AI chatbot named 'Cedric'. The report further added that in a Slack group dedicated to Cursor discussion, approximately 1,500 Amazon employees participated to show interest in the tool. Internal polling results within the group showed more than 60 Amazon employees preferred Cursor over other competing tools, such as Windsurf, which only 10 people chose. Last year, Cursor's desktop application gained popularity, particularly for its ability to assist with coding using Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet model. Its features got a further boost when Microsoft added the model to GitHub Copilot. The platform's rise continued after AI researcher Andrej Karpathy helped popularise the idea of ' vibe coding ', where developers let AI take the lead on writing code. By March, the tool had over one million daily users, highlighting its rapid growth and appeal. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories Company chief Andy Jassy acknowledged Cursor's popularity during last month's earnings call, citing the company as a key driver behind the "explosion of coding agents."
