BDA frees up nearly 5 acres of govt land in week-long eviction drive
During the drive, officials cleared 2.6 acres of land by demolishing 300ft of boundary wall, nine tin sheds, two bathrooms and 100ft of bamboo fence.
"The eviction at Pandra was completed today. We faced some amount of opposition from the locals, but it was largely a peaceful drive," BDA's liaison officer Subharnshu Mohanty said.
The move was part of BDA's week-long anti-encroachment drive carried out in several parts of the city to free up valuable govt land of encroachment.
In the past week, BDA's central eviction monitoring committee, with the help of local police, carried out back-to-back eviction drives at Lingipur and Sisupalgarh areas and freed up nearly three acres of govt land.
At Pandra, the general administration department had identified around 2.6 acres of land occupied by encroachers. "The department made a requisition and we carried out the drive accordingly. Now govt signboards have been installed at the site to ensure that it is not encroached upon," Mohanty added.

Similarly, at Lingipur, the rural development department identified around 2.3 acres of land which were encroached upon. Accordingly, BDA officials demolished various structures, including houses, shops, staircases, hoardings, steel railings and boundary walls. Officials said that the eviction drive at Lingipur was carried out to facilitate the construction of a road from Lingipur filling station to Nuagaon filling station.
Now that the drive is completed, the rural development department will take up the road work, sources said.
At Sishupalgarh, the eviction drive was conducted for constructing a road and a drain for a major housing colony in the area. During the drive, six cement platforms, a building, six shops and houses and 18 tin houses were demolished and cleared.
"Bhubaneswar does have a lot of valuable govt land which is encroached upon. It is imperative that the govt should identify these places and clear the encroachment so that it could be used for public purposes," Pitambar Behera, a retired govt employee, said.

PCMC's green claims fall flat as ESR reveals air, river pollution still high
1 2 3 4 Pune: The latest Environment Status Report (ESR) of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) reveals alarming levels of air and river pollution across the twin cities, despite the civic body's claims of launching green initiatives. The revelation has drawn sharp criticism from environmentalists and residents alike. The ESR data for 2024-25 reveals that the city's average particulate matter (PM) 2.5 and PM10 levels — key indicators of air pollution — significantly exceeded India's National Ambient Air Quality Standards. You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune Similarly, critical water quality parameters like dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) in the Pavana, Indrayani, and Mula rivers — all of which flow through Pimpri Chinchwad — were found to be far beyond limits considered safe, pointing to severe contamination. Prashant Raul, an activist from the Green Army group, slammed PCMC's initiatives and said, "The ground reality is far worse than even what the ESR suggests. If our rivers remain polluted despite crores of rupees spent on green projects, something is seriously wrong with PCMC's approach. Their awards for environmental initiatives now seem hollow in light of this report." In June 2025, PCMC raised Rs200 crore via green municipal bonds to fund sustainable projects like Harit Setu. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cliff Richard's Partner Finally Revealed – You Won't Believe Who Outlier Model Undo Last year, it also clinched top spot in the state's 'Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 4.0' for environmental conservation. Raul told TOI that the ESR's detailed findings show dangerously low DO levels in parts of the Pavana river. "Low DO levels threaten aquatic life and pose serious health risks to residents relying on these rivers," he said. Last year, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classified the Pavana river under the 'Priority 1' category, marking it among India's most polluted rivers. Despite its role as a primary drinking water source for the city, PCMC's efforts to address river pollution appear inadequate. Reports of floating dead fish and toxic foam in the river are frequent. Activists blame the civic body for releasing untreated effluents into rivers due to an inadequate network of sewage treatment plants (STP). Shailaja Deshpande of NGO Jeevitnadi, who has been working in the river conservation sector for several years, highlighted, "The STPs within PCMC limits are not operating in accordance with CPCB norms, resulting in a significant amount of untreated effluent being released directly into the rivers." When it comes to air pollution, local resident Pushkar Kulkarni attributed the surge to unplanned development. "New high-rise projects are mushrooming, but there is no proper planning for resources. Construction dust is a major contributor to PM2.5 and PM10 levels, and norms are not strictly followed," he said. Despite being a major industrial hub, Pimpri Chinchwad lacks a dedicated facility for hazardous waste disposal as well. "Without proper disposal systems, illegal burning of hazardous waste is rampant, further worsening air quality," pointed out Raul. Sanjay Kulkarni, PCMC's city engineer and head of the environment department, acknowledged the rising pollution levels but attributed them to ongoing construction and development activities. "We have introduced measures like mechanical road sweeping, fog cannons, and air bins under the National Clean Air Programme. A dedicated squad also monitors compliance at construction sites," he told TOI. On river pollution, Kulkarni said, "We have prepared a master drainage plan to prevent untreated discharges into rivers, but we are awaiting funds from state or Central govts. In the past six months, PCMC added three new STPs, with one more set to be operational soon. At present, 20 STPs are functional across the city, and we are committed to cleaning our rivers." 500m long, 27m wide: New bridge on Sukhna Choe to beat the blues
1 2 Chandigarh: The city's third high-level bridge on the Sukhna Choe near Shastri Nagar, connecting Manimajra to Sector 26, will be 500 metre long and 27 metre wide. It will be four-laned, with 5m wide pedestrian pathways and dedicated cycle tracks as part of the bridge. The bridge will start on one side from near the T-junction, Sector 26, and on the other side near Shastri Nagar. The level of the bridge will be integrated with the adjacent roads to achieve the intent for which the bridge was constructed. Part of the project is the plan to upgrade the T-junction, which currently has a traffic light point. "The T-junction will be raised by 2 metres for smooth movement of traffic. A slip road will also be constructed towards the Transport Chowk side. A free lane will be provided for traffic coming from the Sector 26 side towards the Manimajra side," said a UT official. The existing bridge over the Sukhna Choe is at a lower level, a causeway, and often gets inundated during monsoons, making the road unsafe and inaccessible. This gravely impacts traffic movement. The bridge carries a very heavy traffic load. It is the main route to the Punjab and Haryana high court, Haryana Secretariat, Sukhna Lake, and other parts of the northern sectors for traffic coming from Panchkula, Manimajra, IT Park, and other locations, including inter-state traffic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here are the signs of Magnesium deficiency Undo It is also one of the major links to the city for traffic coming from Panchkula. Originally, there was only a single road, but with the traffic pressure increasing on the stretch over the years, it is now a six-lane road with cycle tracks on both sides. The proposal for a high-level bridge on Sukhna Choe at this site was first proposed in the Chandigarh Master Plan (CMP-2031). The urgency to implement the CMP proposal came after major traffic disruptions caused by flooding in recent years and the increasing incidence of traffic snarls. During the monsoon of 2023, after waters from the Sukhna Lake were released into the Sukhna Choe, the culvert was flooded, and the fast-moving water caused major damage to it. This resulted in traffic being closed on the route for several days. The administration started planning the upgradation of the existing connectivity over the Sukhna Choe near Bapu Dham Colony. The UT engineering department was directed to undertake a feasibility study of the location. Under the study, the volume of traffic and its pattern were examined, and a consultant was hired to plan the bridge. The project was recently "conceptually" approved by the subcommittee of the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
