Miley Cyrus, on the verge of a new era, reveals 'traumatic' health scare: 'excruciating'
LOS ANGELES — For Miley Cyrus, an 'extremely excruciating' pain preceded 'Something Beautiful.'
The pop star and Disney channel alumna this week spoke candidly about her mental, emotional and physical health, unveiling that she powered through a 'medical emergency' during her live 'New Year's Eve Party' TV special three years ago. The Grammy-winning 'Flowers' musician said she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture.
'We didn't know exactly what was going on, but it was pretty traumatic, 'cause it was extremely excruciating,' she told DJ and Apple Music interviewer Zane Lowe in a far-ranging conversation published Wednesday. 'I did the show anyways.'
The 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Party in the U.S.A' singer, 32, rang in 2023 for NBC, co-hosting her 'Miley's New Year's Eve Party' with godmother and music icon Dolly Parton. During the special, produced by 'Saturday Night Live' boss Lorne Michaels, Cyrus performed live, taking the stage alongside Parton, Paris Hilton, Sia and Fletcher. Latto, Rae Sremmurd and Liily were also among the musical acts who joined the New Year's celebration.
Cyrus, who said she couldn't pass up an opportunity to work with both Michaels and Parton, told Lowe the holiday gig 'was really hard on me' and did not go into further detail about the health scare. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs found in an ovary or on its surface. Cysts are common and can often be harmless and cause little to no discomfort, but larger cysts can bring about symptoms including pelvic pain, abdominal pressure and bloating, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cysts can 'become twisted or burst open,' causing 'pain and bleeding inside the pelvis.'
The 'Hannah Montana' star also opened up about a polyp on her vocal cords, which makes live performances feel like 'running a marathon with the weights on,' and her sobriety journey. Cyrus has been in the public eye since childhood and in recent years has spoken about her struggles with addiction. In December 2020, she told Rolling Stone about her drug and alcohol use and how the young, drug-related deaths of artists including Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix prompted her to 'pull my[self] together before I'm 27.'
For Cyrus, sobriety hasn't always been a straightforward path, but this week she said 'sobriety is … like my God.'
'I need it. I live for [it]. It's changed my entire life,' she said before acknowledging there was a moment she 'fell apart' in recent years. 'I was so close to who's sitting here right now but … [life] had more lessons for me.'
Cyrus, who won her first career Grammy for 'Flowers' in 2024, is on the verge of a new, theatrical and fashionable era. Her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful' is due May 30 and will be accompanied by a film in June.
'This era marks another bold artistic evolution for Miley, blending music and film into an immersive experience,' according to an announcement shared to her Instagram page.
'Something Beautiful,' Cyrus said in the Apple Music chat, ' couldn't [be] any more personal to me.'
She added: 'Every single string, sound… sequin, strand of hair, eye lash has been considered and created not only something that I love but something that I'm excited to share with [fans.]'

The Disneyland Resort Is Trading ‘Monsters Inc.' for ‘Avatar'
The Disneyland Resort is officially trading one Sully for another. At the D23 Expo last year, Disney announced James Cameron's world of Avatar would be coming to its California Adventure theme park in Anaheim, as well as a new ride based on Pixar's Coco. What the company didn't announce at the time was where the heck those things would fit into the already crowded area. Well, Thursday night, Disney announced those locations and revealed that the addition of Na'vi leader Jake Sully meant everyone's favorite blue monster, Sulley, would be saying goodbye Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!, a family-friendly ride which opened at Disney California Adventure in 2005, is officially closing in early 2026 to make way for this new Avatar 'experience.' Avatar will also take over the majority of that area of the park, the Hollywood Backlot, meaning a signature California area will be leaving California Adventure. As for Coco, that ride will be going on the other side of the park near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier. Which is fitting, as that's where many other Pixar-themed rides reside. Nothing will be leaving for that, though, as it'll largely take over 'backstage' areas. Construction on Coco will begin this fall. Avatar is 'still in the early stages of development,' so we still don't know what, specifically, it's even going to be or when it's going to start construction. Just that to do so, Monsters Inc. will permanently close in 2026. Of course, with Monsters Inc. leaving the West Coast, we should mention it's being reborn on the East Coast. Don't forget that back at the D23 Expo, it was also announced a full Monsters Inc. land was coming to Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, highlighted by a wild-looking roller coaster. So, the hit Pixar franchise isn't being totally shafted, just shifted. Finally, in a piece of news that is basically just for people who live on the West Coast, with Disneyland doing all of this construction, it will also be adding a new transportation hub and parking lot. Which, we know, doesn't sound all that exciting. But if you've ever driven to Disneyland and been stuck in traffic at one of its two giant parking lots, anything to alleviate that pressure is a big deal. It'll be on the east side of the park, behind Tomorrowland, and will offer all manner of improved transportation solutions. ‘Cheers' star George Wendt's cause of death confirmed
A cause of death has been confirmed for 'Cheers' star George Wendt, who died on May 20 at the age of 76. The beloved actor died from cardiac arrest, according to a death certificate released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and obtained by TMZ. The certificate cites congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and hypertension as underlying causes of Wendt's death, with significant contributing conditions of kidney failure and high cholesterol. Wendt reportedly died peacefully in his sleep at his home, and cremated eight days later. 'George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,' his family said in a statement. 'He will be missed forever.' Best known for his role as Norm Peterson on 'Cheers,' Wendt appeared in all 275 episodes of the NBC sitcom, which ran from 1982 to 1993. The six-time Emmy Award nominee later went on to headline 'The George Wendt Show,' appear in countless movies and craft a stage career that took him to Broadway in 'Art,' 'Hairspray' and 'Elf.' ___ © 2025 New York Daily News.
