Royals in 1-0 loss after goal ruled out
They came up against Universities of Canterbury away and gave away possession in the middle in the 11th minute.
The home side's cross found Pero Forman unmarked in the penalty box to finish — and record a 1-0 victory against the Royals.
The Royals thought they had forced an equaliser in the 85th minute only for this to be ruled out and despite eight minutes of time added on the Royals would not be able to find a way through.
The loss left the Royals on 10 points and fourth equal.
Wānaka made the long trip up to Nelson and thanks to keeper Josh Shackleton's heroics it looked like the Central Otago side would come away with a share of the points.
He denied Nelson twice early, but was helpless to stop Lennon Whewell's 29th-minute opener.
Shackleton again pulled off a couple of stunning saves early in the second half and Wānaka equalised on the hour mark when Ed Belingher ghosted in unmarked at the far post to score from close range.
Heading into injury time, it looked like Wanaka would secure a draw but Whewell beat a couple of defenders and shot across goal to secure a 2-1 win.
Frontrunners Christchurch United had a 2-1 win against Cashmere, Ferrymead Bays beat Coastal 3-1 and Nomads United had a 2-1 win against Selwyn United. Men's Southern Premiership
In the men's Southern Premiership, University looked to claim their fifth consecutive victory when they went 2-0 up over Roslyn at Ellis Park after only 23 minutes.
The students had the better share of possession and led through goals to Blake Allison and former Roslyn player Simba Muwunganirwa.
University stretched Roslyn and should have added to their tally but paid for their missed chances.
Roslyn were more structured in the second half with some slick touch passing resulting in Hamish Mair being on the end of a cross at 58 minutes.
Roslyn's Jack McFarlane found himself in space on the left, dribbled into the box and calmly passed it into the net for the equaliser.
McFarlane then turned creator, curling a right-sided free kick into the path of substitute Ben Williams-Davies who scored an 88th-minute goal for a 3-2 win.
Northern steamrolled Old Boys 8-1 in Invercargill.
Nicholas Brett scored a first-half hat-trick.
William Fleming's 29th-minute strike gave Old Boys some hope, but Rory Hibbert also scored a hat-trick and Toby Orchiston a brace to leave Northern top of the table on 15 points.
Queens Park and Royals had an entertaining 2-2 draw.
The Royals had a halftime lead, following a passage that involved 13 passes.
It was crossed into the box and found Charlie Fawcett, who bent his right-footed shot perfectly past the outstretched hand of the keeper into the top corner.
Queens Park equalised on the hour mark when Tom Kent's long-range free kick found Rodrigo Schmidt De Camargo in the penalty box.
Queens Park took the lead when Anton Fitzgerald planted a far-post header into the back of the net.
The Royals claimed a share of the points when skipper George Barker equalised with the 77th-minute penalty.
In the battle at Sunnyvale, Mosgiel beat Green Island 2-1.
Green Island took a 46th-minute lead through Finley Kruger.
The Plainsmen responded when Luke Clissold showed great technique to volley home the equaliser and Mosgiel claimed three points when Patrick Koppert headed home an in-swinging corner on 65 minutes.
In the women's South Island league, the Royals thumped Nelson Suburbs 8-0 at Logan Park.
Amy Hislop claimed a hat-trick — leading the golden-boot race with a total of eight goals — and Raegan Potter bagged a brace.
Hannah Mackay-Wright's goal made it 4-0 at halftime.
Toni Power made it 7-0 on 65 minutes and substitute Georgia Kennedy rounded out.
Roslyn Wakari moved up the table with a 2-1 victory in Kaiapoi over NW United.
Zara Pratley's opener on 15 minutes was cancelled out when NW equalised 10 minutes before the break.
However, Catriona Galvin scored the winner on 56 minutes to move Roslyn to fourth.
Otago University held on for a 3-2 win against Universities of Canterbury at Logan Park yesterday.

Royals score five in convincing win
The Dunedin City Royals put five goals past Universities of Canterbury to notch an impressive win on Saturday. Building from last week's draw with high-flyers Christchurch United, the Royals beat UC 5-0 in the men's Southern League at Logan Park on Saturday. The Royals took a seventh-minute lead when they smartly passed the ball around the UC defence allowing Will Turner to score. Midway through the first half Brady Jacobs jinked into the penalty box and struck his shot against the post. The Royals were enjoying a host of possession and keeper Alex Boomer had little to do. As halftime approached Max Davidson was denied a goal when his powerful header was spectacularly saved by Matthew Aitchison. It was 2-0 soon after the restart when Charlie Fawcett scored in the 47th minute. Turner made it 3-0 just before the hour mark. Coach Blair Scoullar was happy to have a strong bench. He introduced Cato Williams and Lewis Wall — both of whom got on the scoresheet in the 70th and 77th minutes to round out a well-deserved victory. The top of the table clash between Cashmere Tech and Christchurch United finished 2-2, meaning if Coastal Spirit can win Sunday's clash over Ferrymead Bays, Spirit will go top of the table. Selwyn remain rooted to the bottom of the table after losing 6-2 to Nomads. Wānaka did not play as their game over Nelson Suburbs was postponed, as Suburbs were in the Chatham Cup cup semifinal where they lost 3-0 to Auckland United. In the women's South Island league Roslyn Wakari was the only southern team in action. They took a lead through Morgan McCormick in the 22nd minute against Coastal Spirit at Logan Park. However, Margi Dias and Samantha Whyte both bagged doubles to give Coastal a 4-1 win. In the ODT Men's Southern Premiership, Northern continued on its quest for a 100% season with an emphatic 7-0 victory on the road against Northern Hearts. Sam Cosgrove opened the scoring after five minutes, before Rory Hibbert scored a 16-minute hat-trick to lead 4-0 after 40 minutes. While doing so, he took his personal tally to 21 goals for the season. Toby Orchiston made it 5-0 midway through the second half and Cosgrove bagged two late goals to get his first hat-trick of the season. Mosgiel retained second spot beating the Dunedin City Royals 4-0, Queens Park claimed local bragging rights in the Invercargill derby beating Old Boys 4-0, while Roslyn Wakari overcame Green Island 2-1 at Sunnyvale thanks to a double from Ben Williams-Davies. In the Women's Southern Premiership, Green Island moved clear at the top of the table beating Northern 2-0 with Hannah Post and Jonna Barth's goals. University and the Dunedin City Royals played out a 0-0 draw to leave them both three points behind Green Island — however both teams have games in hand. Queens Park came from behind to beat Roslyn with Tyler Andrews scoring her second goal in the 87th minute, before Megan Waters injury time goal secured a 3-1 win for the Invercargill team. — Neville Watson

Royals stay perfect to clinch South Island crown
The Dunedin City Royals celebrate winning the Women's South Island League in Nelson on Saturday. PHOTO: SUPPLIED The Dunedin City Royals have been crowned the queens of the South Island. They wrapped up the Women's South Island League title with two rounds to spare after beating Nelson Suburbs 3-1 in wet conditions on Saturday. Youngster Hannah Scott — the 15-year-old getting her first start — scored the opener two minutes in before Nelson equalised through Samantha Crawford. Defender Hannah Mackay-Wright scored a brilliant penalty in the 68th minute and Amy Hislop sealed it for the Royals with a screamer in the 82nd minute. It was good reward for a team who were up at 4.30am to catch a flight to Nelson and had a "sluggish" warm-up. Head coach Kris Ridley could not be prouder of his players, who knuckled down over the past few weeks to win the title. "It's what we set out for at the start," Ridley said. "We wanted to win the Kate Sheppard Cup and the league. "Cup, we were a bit short, but the league, we've done everything right so far. Three points every week and that's sort of what we aim for. "Just really proud of the group. "It's been a massive effort, especially probably the last three or four games." There was further reason to celebrate with stalwart Kelsey Kennard bringing up her 250th game. "We wanted to make it as special as we could," Ridley said. "The girls were probably doing whatever they could to win for Kelsey as well as winning the league, so it was a good double." Roslyn-Wakari drew 1-1 with NW United. Amelie East-Giles opening the scoring in the 13th minute but Roslyn conceded the equaliser in the first half stoppage time. Otago University beat Universities of Canterbury 2-0 in Christchurch yesterday. — There is still all to play for ODT Women's Southern Premiership with only one point separating Green Island, University and the Royals. Green Island beat Queens Park 3-0 with Hannah Post scoring a brace, University beat Roslyn-Wakari 3-1, and the Royals, who had beaten Northern 7-0 in a midweek catch-up game, were held to a 0-0 draw by Northern. The Royals have a game in hand.

Northern seal title with eight-goal rout
Northern clinched their first title in 49 years with a comprehensive victory against Old Boys Invercargill on Saturday. They beat Old Boys 8-1 at Logan Park turf to lift the ODT Men's Southern Premiership trophy — their first league championship since 1976 — with three games to spare. Northern have been completely dominant all year, winning all 13 games and scoring more than 50 goals in an impressive tally. Nick Treadwell's sixth-minute opener settled any nerves for Northern, and Sam Cosgrove's brace in the 36th and 42nd minute added breathing room. Old Boys conceded an own goal as well for Northern to hold a 4-0 lead at halftime and effectively ensure the title was heading back to the Gardens. Rory Hibbert, the competition's leading scorer, bagged a brace, scoring after 47 and 62 minutes to extend his season tally to 18 goals so far. Toby Orchiston scored in the 64th minute and Old Boys' Oliver Milne-Wahren scored the Invercargill side's goal in the 80th. Janci Gorman rounded out the scoring for Northern in the 83rd minute. University moved into second spot by beating Roslyn-Wakari 2-0, after Mosgiel lost 2-0 at home to Green Island. Tate Barron and Ryan Walker scored in each half for Green Island. The Dunedin City Royals jumped ahead of Queens Park and moved to fourth after beating the Invercargill team 1-0. George Barker scored from a penalty for the Royals in the 53rd minute, and Rodrigo Schmidt De Camargo placed his own penalty attempt for Queen's Park wide 20 minutes later. — In the Southern League, the Royals secured a point 1-1 draw with a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser against second-placed Christchurch United in atrocious conditions in Christchurch. Christchurch held the lead at halftime after Joel Stevens guided his effort home despite Jed Collings sliding in on a very waterlogged pitch in a valiant attempt to keep it out. The home side were reduced to 10 when Ben Stroud was given a red in the 80th minute for pulling back Brady Jacobs. They paid the price when Lewis Wall ghosted in behind the defence to get on the end of a long ball that Christchurch let bounce and Wall squeezed his shot past keeper Steven Van Dijk from the edge of the box. Wānaka also came up against atrocious conditions against Nomads United, losing 4-1 in Christchurch. They lost goalkeeper Josh Shackleton to injury after only 37 minutes, leaving substitute outfielder Elijah Gaeth taking over the gloves. Nomads broke the deadlock in the second half and were 2-0 up when Ryan Hamilton scored a bizarre own goal after 65 minutes. Ed Belingher pulled one back for Wanaka on 72 minutes, but Nomads scored another two goals in the last few minutes. Cashmere Tech beat Ferrymead Bays 3-0 to go top of the table, Universities of Canterbury had a 3-3 draw with Selwyn United, and Nelson Suburbs completed the round with a 2-0 win over Coastal Spirit. — Neville Watson
