Rupert Everett and Hayley Atwell to star in Rivals series two
Based on Jilly Cooper's novel of the same name, the series centres on a group of wealthy media types in the 1980s who are based in the Cotswolds.
Atwell will be playing Helen Gordon, ex-wife of Alex Hassell's Rupert Campbell-Black, and mother of his two children - Marcus and Tabitha, while Everett will play her husband, Malise Gordon.
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins, chief creative officer at Happy Prince, told the Edinburgh TV Festival: "We have some new guests.
"So, some new cast, some of them are newly created characters, with Jilly's blessing, some famous characters.
"And most importantly, we're looking into Rupert more. So, we have Rupert's children… but also with them… anyone who knows Jilly Cooper knows that Rupert's ex-wife, Helen, loathes him, and she is married to his old show jumping boss, who's a bit older than her.
"So, we are bringing Helen and Malise Gordon into this series, played by Rupert Everett and Haley Atwell, so they will be joining the cast.
"And for fans of the books, it's great to dig deeper into Rupert."
Everett, 66, is known for starring in a range of TV series and films including My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) and St Trinian's (2007), where he was seen playing headmistress Camilla Fritton.
Atwell, 43, has starred in the Mission: Impossible films and is also known for playing Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The announcement comes after the BBC reported actress Kate Robbins would be joining the cast.
Robbins is the mother of Emily Atack, who plays Sarah Stratton, the character who was seen playing naked tennis with Rupert in series one - a moment that was Bafta-nominated.
Atack told the Edinburgh TV Festival that she "wasn't afraid to identify with" Stratton, who has an affair with Rupert, and added: "I completely am her. I'm a very flawed woman. I've made terrible decisions in my love life."
She added: "The term, sort of typecast, is always sort of seen as this negative thing.
"I've been typecast my whole life, and I've loved every single minute of it, and I will carry on playing these sexy women for as long as they will have me."
Further ensemble cast have been announced as Sanditon 's Maxim Ays, Mr Loverman star Holly Cattle, Slow Horses star Eliot Salt, and One Day 's Jonny Weldon.

Ozzy Osbourne documentary pulled from BBC at family's request
'We are respecting the family's wishes to wait a bit longer before airing this very special film,' said the BBC. The documentary Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home, set to air on BBC One on Monday, was pulled from the schedule. Initially, there was no reason given; however, a BBC spokesperson later said that Osbourne's family has made the request. 'Our sympathies are with the Osbourne family at this difficult time. We are respecting the family's wishes to wait a bit longer before airing this very special film,' said the spokesperson. A new broadcast date is set to be confirmed shortly. 'This intimate film follows the final three years of Ozzy Osbourne's life as he and Sharon plan a return home after 25 years in L.A. and prepare for the ultimate farewell gig,' according to the documentary's synopsis. It details his move back to the U.K. and features interviews with Osbourne, his wife Sharon and children Jack and Kelly. Osbourne died on July 22 at the age of 76. His official cause of death was a heart attack. The news came shortly after the Black Sabbath frontman's final gig at Villa Park, in his hometown of Birmingham. Additionally, Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019 and suffered from spinal injuries. 'I've sat down to write this a hundred times and still don't know if the words will ever feel like enough,' said Kelly on Instagram after Osbourne's funeral. 'But from the bottom of my heart, thank you. The love, support, and beautiful messages I've received from so many of you have truly helped carry me through the hardest moment of my life. Shonda Rhimes says it is 'cute' that Bridgerton has been called 'woke'
US TV producer Shonda Rhimes has responded to her Netflix show Bridgerton being called "woke" and said she does not read opinions online. Rhimes, 55, executive-produced the Regency-style show, created the long running series Grey's Anatomy, and is chief executive of global media company Shondaland. Critics of Bridgerton, including Telegraph columnist Andrew Roberts, have called the series "woke" for its use of actors from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where she received the event's inaugural fellowship, Rhimes said: "I didn't know anyone described it (the show) as woke. That's so cute. "I learned a really long time ago that I don't read things that are written about the shows. "The reason is… because if you decide to believe the good things that are written about you, you also are obligated to believe the bad things that are written about you. "So I've decided that none of that matters. It's really important to stay out of that, how people react and take in the show is none of my business." Bridgerton is set during Regency-era England and the series includes actors from different ethnic backgrounds. Asked whether she was trying to "shake up" the British period drama with her casting, she said that was not the case, but added: "I'm never going to write a show that doesn't include me. "I just, I find it less interesting when I don't see my own face." Rhimes said when she first read the books, from Julia Quinn, she saw Bridgerton as a "workplace drama" and added that its success has seen it become a "lifestyle brand". She added: "I had a lot of disdain for romance novels… but I read this book, and it was so good that I got out of bed sick, went to the bookstore, bought the rest of the books and came back and read them. "I remember saying to my producing partner, Betsy Beers, 'I've found this thing that's a show', and she thought I had lost my mind. "But I didn't see it as a romance novel. To me, Bridgerton is a workplace drama. The women have no power in any other areas of their lives. "The only place they have power is in who they marry and how they marry, and that marriage is a workplace, and those are colleagues coming together to make sure that their faiths and futures are sealed in a way that is positive for them. "Now I know that's not how you think of it, but that's how I thought of it. "I thought, there's something really amazing in showing this world of women, where, you look at history, and there's all these other stories told. Nobody's talking about this period of time for women." Bridgerton series four will follow the love story between Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha. It will be released on Netflix in 2026.
