Amy Poehler Gives ‘Parks and Rec' Fans the Greatest Gift: The ‘Philly Justice' Trailer with Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, and Kathryn Hahn

Yahoo20-05-2025

It's not quite 'Threat Level Midnight,' but it's close — and real. Amy Poehler has revealed the faux spoof TV show trailer for 'Philly Justice,' a fake series she and 'Parks and Recreation' co-stars Adam Scott, Rashida Jones, Paul Rudd, Nick Offerman, and Kathryn Hahn made for fun while filming the hit NBC sitcom.
The existence of the project has been teased throughout Poehler's podcast 'Good Hang' and now, finally, its trailer is out. The tagline reads: 'Philadelphia has never been more in need of justice.'

'Parks and Rec' creator Mike Schur, producer Morgan Sackett, and stars Scott and Jones joined Poehler for world premiere of the 'Philly Justice' trailer on 'Good Hang.'
'This one is for the fans. We heard you loud and clear,' Poehler said, adding that 'Philly Justice' was conceived after looking at a cast photo on the set of 'Parks and Rec' during Season 4. That inside joke spurred a parallel to a very real David E. Kelley procedural pilot that was shot in 2005 but never aired. Dylan McDermott was part of that series; Schur and the 'Parks and Rec' writers room then wrote a 20 page script for a fictional spin on 'Philly Justice' purely for the 'Parks and Rec' cast to have. However, McDermott was asked to reprise his role for the trailer, which was never going to be released, until now.
Check out the 'Philly Justice' trailer below and deduce the plot yourself. All we can say is that Poehler previously said during podcast 'Good Hang' that it was a 'shitty show' with Hahn playing a lawyer who may or may not be in a relationship with Jones' character.
'Parks and Rec' aired from 2009 to 2015 for seven seasons. The series also starred Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Rob Lowe, Jim O'Heir, and Retta. Schur said in 2019 that if there were to be any sequel series, the whole cast would have to be on board. 'I would say we would do it if literally every person says yes. If one person says no, we shouldn't do it,' he said.

Lorne Michaels Speaks From the Heart, Investigative Reporters Sound the Alarm on Trump Upheaval at Peabody Awards

Peabody Award winners sounded the alarm on the threats to democratic norms, criminal justice reform and forward progress in diversity and inclusion goals as the 85th annual kudos were handed out Sunday in Beverly Hills. Meanwhile, 'Saturday Night Live' chief Lorne Michaels spoke from the heart as he accepted the Peabody's Institutional Award for his enduring NBC sketch comedy series. It's the sixth Peabody in total collected by the storied late-night show that bowed in 1975. More from Variety Andrea Mitchell on Rebuilding Faith in the News Media: 'Trust Is the Coin of the Realm, and We Have to Be the Gold Standard' Jeffrey P. Jones on Why the Peabody Awards Are America's Archive of TV Excellence Lorne Michaels Banned Chris Farley From 'SNL' for 'Weeks at a Time' to Help Him Get Off 'the Drinking and the Drugs': He 'Clearly Had Addiction Issues' Referring to the 'SNL50' specials that aired in February, Michaels said, 'All those people coming back from the first season on, all being in one room performing and applauding was one of the most moving experiences of my life.' Michaels, 84, also made what seemed to be an oblique nod to the endless churn of speculation about the long-term plan for the show. 'I'm not planning a sixtieth,' he said after referencing 'SNL50.' 'Getting to do what I get to do is sort of everything that makes me happy. Also makes me angry,' he said. Michaels closed with a shout-out to the Peabody Awards, which are administered by the University of Georgia's George Foster Peabody School of Communications. 'When you come to the Peabodys, unlike other awards shows, you know you're in the right room. It's really an honor to be here, so thank you,' he said. There were also numerous calls for support of public media and opposition to Trump administration efforts to gut federal funding for PBS, NPR and other public media and arts program. The larger subject of the administration's effort to slash federal spending in general was also decried by numerous winners as a violation of cherished democratic norms. Dave Biscobing, chief investigative reporter for the ABC affiliate in Phoenix, was hailed for his years-long dedication to producing a 32-part series that uncovered systemic police brutality and racism in local policing. Just a few days ago, Trump's Justice Department has 'retracted' an earlier report that documented Biscobing's work. 'They can retract the report, they can erase their words but they'll never erase what we did,' Biscobing told the crowd. 'Not as long as all of us are here. Not as long as there are people like us to tell stories that matter.' Matthew Hashiguchi, the journalist behind the in-depth report 'The Only Doctor' for the Reel South public media station, referenced the growing crisis in rural health care as he took in the kudo for his deep-dive report on the woman is the only physician around in a wide swath of rural Georgia's Clay County. Dr. Karen Kinsell was on hand with Hashiguichi and received the first standing ovation of the night. Hashiguchi emphasized that she has no choice but to treat anyone in need regardless of their ability to pay. 'If Medicaid is cut, we're going to need more people like her,' he warned. The power of TV to affect change around the world was also highlighted with the kudo presented to 'Mr. Bates Vs. the Post Office.' The British narrative drama was an expose of the scandal that engulfed the nation's Post Office system in the early aughts, and law enforcement's ruthless pursuit of everyday people despite evidence of their innocence. Public reaction to 'Mr. Bates' was so strong that there was retroactive efforts to bring justice to those wrongly accused even 20 years later. Producers James Strong and Patrick Spence 'Such is the power of television. Such is the power of a nation brought to rage by such a naked abuse of power,' said producer Patrick Spence, who accepted with James Strong. 'May that be an inspiration to all of us.' 'Lilo & Stitch' passes 'Sinners' to become 2nd highest grossing film of 2025

'Lilo & Stich' and 'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning' dominated the box office charts again after fueling a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend. Theaters in the U.S. and Canada had several new films to offer this weekend as well, including Sony's family friendly 'Karate Kid: Legends' and the A24 horror movie 'Bring Her Back. ' According to studio estimates Sunday, it added up to a robust $149 million post-holiday weekend that's up over 120% from the same timeframe last year. Disney's live-action hybrid 'Lilo & Stitch' took first place again with $63 million from 4,410 locations in North America. It was enough to pass 'Sinners' to become the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales. Globally, its running total is $610.8 million. 'Sinners,' meanwhile, is still going strong in its seventh weekend with another $5.2 million, bumping it to $267.1 million domestically and $350.1 million globally. The eighth 'Mission: Impossible' movie also repeated in second place, with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations. As with 'Lilo & Stitch,' that's down 57% from its opening. With $122.6 million in domestic tickets sold, it's performing in line with the two previous installments. But with a reported production budget of $400 million, profitability is a ways off. Internationally, it added $76.1 million (including $25.2 million from China where it just opened), bringing its global total to $353.8 million. 'This is the year of longterm playability,' said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's senior media analyst. 'The currency of word of mouth and the strong hold is more important than opening weekend dollars.' Leading the newcomers was Sony's 'Karate Kid: Legends,' with an estimated $21 million from 3,809 locations. The movie brings Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio together to train a new kid, the kung fu prodigy Li Fong ( Ben Wang ). Chan starred in a 2010 reboot of the 1984 original, while Macchio has found a new generation of fans in the series 'Cobra Kai,' which just concluded a six-season run. Reviews might have been mixed, but opening weekend audiences gave the PG-13 rated film a strong A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrak. It also only cost a reported $45 million to produce and has several weeks until a new family-friendly film arrives. 'Karate Kid: Legends' opened earlier internationally and has a worldwide total of $47 million. Fourth place went 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' which earned $10.8 million in its third weekend. The movie is the highest-grossing in the franchise, not accounting for inflation, with $229.3 million globally. The weekend's other big newcomer, 'Bring Her Back' rounded out the top five with $7.1 million from 2,449 screens. Starring Sally Hawkins as a foster mother with some disturbing plans, the film is the sophomore feature of twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who made the 2023 horror breakout 'Talk to Me.' It earned a rare-for-horror B+ CinemaScore and is essentially the only new film in the genre until '28 Years Later' opens on June 20. A new Wes Anderson movie, 'The Phoenician Scheme,' also debuted in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, where it made $270,000. It expands nationwide next weekend. The summer box office forecast remains promising, though there's a long way to go to get to the $4 billion target (a pre-pandemic norm that only the 'Barbenheimer' summer has surpassed). The month of May is expected to close out with $973 million – up 75% from May 2024, according to data from Comscore. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'Lilo & Stitch,' $63 million. 2. 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' $27.3 million. 3. 'Karate Kid: Legends,' 21 million. 4. 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' $10.8 million. 5. 'Bring Her Back,' $7.1 million. 6. 'Sinners,' $5.2 million. 7. 'Thunderbolts,' $4.8 million. 8. 'Friendship,' $2.6 million. 9. 'The Last Rodeo,' $2.1 million. 10. 'j-hope Tour 'HOPE ON THE STAGE' in JAPAN: LIVE VIEWING,' $939,173.
