Chief engineer rains cash from flat window during Vigilance raid, Rs 2.56 crore seized in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Starting with a salary of just Rs 2,000 as a stipendiary engineer in 1991, Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, now a chief engineer in Rural Works department, was found to have made a bounty of 10s of crores in his 34-year-long service as a Vigilance raid on Friday detected a cash stash of more than Rs 2.56 crore and at least Rs 15 lakh worth of property and assets in his possession.
Such was the volume of the alleged unaccounted cash in his possession that he began to throw bundles of notes of Rs 500 denomination out of the window as soon as the anti-corruption agency's officers knocked at the door of his flat in Dumduma here.
The officials then had to recover the cash bundles from the dumping spot. Out of the total cash, Rs 1.21 crore was found from his flat here and Rs 1.30 crore from his house in Angul. Vigilance officials had a tough time counting the cash at both the places.
During the searches, he was also found in possession of a two-storey building spread over 3,200 sq ft at Karadagadia and a double-storey building over 1,000 sqft at Matia Sahi, both in Angul. The chief engineer also owns seven high-value plots in Bhubaneswar and Angul as well as one flat each in the capital city and Pipili.
Vigilance also traced Sarangi's bank and insurance deposits to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore, investments in shares and mutual funds amounting to Rs 2.7 crore, gold ornaments weighing over 1.1 kg, household articles worth more than Rs 15.44 lakh and 15 expensive imported wrist watches.
He has reportedly also spent a huge amount of money towards his daughter and son's dental and B.Tech courses respectively in two private colleges here.
On receiving allegations against Sarangi of amassing disproportionate assets, Vigilance officials carried out searches at seven locations linked to him in Bhubaneswar, Pipili and Angul.

Two Andekar gang members held for extorting Rs48L from fish trader

1 2 Pune: The Faraskhana police on Friday night arrested two members of the Bandu Andekar gang on the charge of extorting Rs 48 lakh from a businessman to allow him to continue his illegal fish business at Ganesh Peth since 2016. "The businessman initially did not register a complaint against the Andekar gang members because of fear. He approached the police after the arrested suspects evicted him from his stall and handed it over to another person after a dispute between them over not paying extortion money for four months," said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Nikhil Pingale on Saturday. Police registered an FIR against Shivam Andekar (30) from Nana Peth and Akash Pardeshi (30) of Lohiyanagar and four to five others for extortion. Pingale said there are numerous fish stalls, legal as well as illegal, operating on a nullah covered with slabs in Ganesh Peth. The Andekar gang extorted Rs 50,000 per month from the victim because his business was illegal. The officer said there was a dispute between the businessman and the gang members after the former refused to meet the extortion demands. Interstate gang behind 35 metro cable thefts busted in Kalol in Gujarat, four arrested

Ahmedabad: As cricket fans cheered the IPL thriller in the city, a gang of thieves quietly dismantled 700 metres of cable from a metro corridor near Koba Circle. Police later discovered this was not their first hit. A surveillance-led crackdown revealed the group's involvement in over 35 such thefts, with operations stretching across cities. The arrest of four men uncovered a vast network of interlinked crimes. Their latest heist, carried out on the night of June 2, saw the gang strike near the Old Koba Metro Station, causing damage worth Rs 17.85 lakh. This was the third metro cable theft in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar corridor in just two weeks. Using CCTV footage from the Netram Project and technical surveillance, investigators from the Gandhinagar local crime branch identified two suspicious vehicles involved in the crime. Subsequent questioning of the vehicle owners and suspects, combined with information obtained from technical surveillance, led the cops to Kalol, where the suspects had rented a property to hide and process stolen goods. The police conducted a raid, only to catch the gang members in the act of stripping the stolen cables for copper wires. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo They seized a significant amount of stolen property, including 368.8kg of copper wires valued at Rs 2.95 lakh and 130.2kg of plastic. Police also seized a car and mobile phones, bringing the total value of recovered property to Rs 8.32 lakh. Further interrogation and technical analysis revealed the involvement of 13 individuals in the metro cable theft scheme. . The gang members admitted to multiple thefts at different locations, including near the Shahpur Metro Station in Ahmedabad and the Gyaspur Metro Station in Vejalpur, Ahmedabad. Those arrested include Musharraf Mulejat, 32, Rashid Dhobi,21, Rashid Ansari, 45, and Irshad Malik, 33, all residents of Bagpat in Uttar Pradesh. The absconding gang members are Shehzad Amruddin Malik, Aamir Akbar Malik, Arif Babu Malik, Ikhlakh Iqbal Malik, Imran Malik, Arif Rafiq, Sonu Babu Kasar, Arshad Asgar Malik, Bilal Qureshi, Raja Qureshi, and Masoom Yasin Malik. This relentless gang employed sophisticated tactics in each operation, including reconnaissance of metro routes, climbing metro pillars to cut cables, and transporting stolen goods for sale in different cities. Modus Operandi The gang executed their operations by targeting cities with functioning metro networks. Upon arrival, they would check into hotels located near railway stations and rent large self-drive four-wheel vehicles, often using platforms like Just Dial. After obtaining a vehicle, they contacted local brokers to arrange rental accommodations that served as storage and processing spaces for the stolen materials. Prior to committing the thefts, the gang conducted thorough reconnaissance of metro routes using their rented cars. To access the overhead cables, they employed techniques such as using ropes and the support of large trees situated near metro bridge pillars, or by climbing adjacent walls close to the pillars. Equipped with large cutters, they would then sever the metro cables. After the theft, the stolen cables were transported to the rented property. There, the gang meticulously stripped off the plastic and rubber coverings to isolate the copper wiring. The extracted copper wires were then bundled, packed, and transported by train from Kalupur Railway Station in Ahmedabad to Delhi, where they were sold.

ICICI manager ploughed Rs 4.6 crore customer funds into stocks, held

KOTA: An ICICI Bank relationship manager in Rajasthan's Kota, Sakshi Gupta, has been arrested for allegedly siphoning off Rs 4.6 crore from 110 accounts of 41 customers from 2020 to 2023 for unauthorised stock market investments that turned into duds, reports Rajiv Saxena. Police said Sakshi concealed the unlawful cash pullouts by replacing registered mobile numbers in several accounts with those belonging to her relatives, ensuring that transaction alerts and OTPs were diverted from actual customers. In one instance, Sakshi used an elderly woman's account - without her knowledge - as a "pool account", shuffling over Rs 3 crore through it by Feb 15, 2023. Much of the unauthorised proceeds were transferred to demat accounts as part of an attempted cover-up for wagering on stock deals. ICICI Bank has suspended Sakshi, who was attached to its DCM branch in Kota, after her arrest last week. But Kota police are probing if others were involved and requested documents from the bank. Investigations revealed that Gupta also allegedly misused debit cards, PINs, and OTPs for her unauthorised transactions, and even activated overdraft facilities in 40 accounts without the customers' consent. She closed fixed deposits of 31 customers and redirected Rs 1.34 crore into unauthorised accounts, police said. , adding a fraudulent personal loan of Rs 3.4 lakh was also disbursed. The bank has reassured customers, saying it has reported the fraud to authorities.
