Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance arrested chief engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi on the last day of his service on Saturday for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He was arrested a day after Rs 2.56 crore in cash was recovered and several immovable assets were detected during search operations on his premises. Sarangi was scheduled to retire on May 31 after 34 years of service in the State government as an engineer in Rural Works department. The Vigilance team had raided seven places linked to Sarangi on Friday. When the Vigilance sleuths reached his residence in Bhubaneswar, he had attempted to dispose of bundles of Rs 500 notes by throwing them out of the window of his flat. Apart from Rs 2.56 crore cash, the engineer was found in possession of two multi-storeyed buildings, two flats, seven high-value plots, bank deposits worth Rs 1.5 crore.

Bhubaneswar, May 31 (UNI) Odisha Vigilance Department officials on Saturday arrested Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, chief engineer, Plan Roads, RW Department, in a disproportionate assets (DA) case. Vigilance sources said he will be forwarded to the court of special judge, Vigilance Anugul. Sarangi was found in possession of assets, including over Rs 2.56 crore in cash, two multi-storeyed buildings, two flats, 7 high-value plots in Bhubaneswar, Anugul and Pipili, bank deposits of Rs 1.5 crore, investments in shares, mutual funds, and insurance Rs 2.7 crore, gold over 1.141 kg,15 imported costly watches during house searches by the sleuths of Vigilance Department on Friday. Vigilance sources said the total movable and immovable property of Sarangi unearthed is likely to exceed Rs 13 crore. He was arrested as he could not satisfactorily account for the assets. The highest cash seizure of Rs 3.41 crore was made from the house of a former assistant engineer of the minor irrigation division in Ganjam district in 2022. Over Rs 3.12 crore was recovered from the house of a former additional sub-collector, Nabarangpur, in 2023, sources in the vigilance said.

Simultaneous searches took place at Sarangi's office, his two-storey house in Karadagadia (Angul), and flats in Bhubaneswar and Siula in Puri district. Vigilance officials also searched his ancestral home and properties belonging to his relatives in Angul. In a separate case of financial misconduct in Odisha, Chintan Raghuvanshi, a deputy director of the ED, was caught red-handed accepting ₹20 lakh from Ratikanta Rout, a Bhubaneswar-based stone-mining businessman. Officials said the amount was part of a larger ₹2 crore bribe allegedly demanded in exchange for relief in an ongoing case against Rout. Some reports indicate the total bribe demand may have gone as high as ₹5 crore, with initial instalments pegged between ₹20 lakh and ₹50 lakh.
