Irish League sustainability the key for former star as investment continues to flood in

Yahoo11 hours ago
As clubs in the Irish Premiership continue to be an attractive proposition for outside investors, one former Irish League star has urged a note of caution.
Gareth McAuley won the Irish Cup with Coleraine back in 2003 before going to have a stellar career in England.
When he left the Bannsiders for Lincoln City they were in the midst of some severe financial problems which threatened the club's very existence.

The Showgrounds outfit survived and are now riding the crest of a wave after major investment from majority shareholder Henry Ross.
Other clubs have also received financial backing in recent years with the prospect of more to come, but the former Northern Ireland international McAuley says clubs need to be sustainable as well.
"I think the League is in a bit of a transition stage at the minute when I look at it, there's nearly different levels," he said.
"It's two-tier really, a league within a league, but the part-time clubs are still competitive in different things.
"Everybody's obviously chasing the European spots and the pot of gold at the end of that.
"There are investors coming in now and talking to a few people. They come in and they do all this analytic stuff. And they're going, well, 'if we spend X amount, we could get this amount in return'.
"It's like a business to them. So where that goes and what happens with that there, I don't know. But I'd like to see them certainly being sustainable. I think that's important."
In his role as Northern Ireland Under-19 boss McAuley is keen for young players to get the opportunity to shine here.
He officially opened the 2025 Budget Energy SuperCupNI on Sunday evening and it brought back memories of his own participation in the tournament back in 1994.
"A lot of things came flooding back when I started to think about it again," said McAuley.
"Obviously 1994 was a few years ago now, but I still remember the boys that I played with in the team and I'm still in contact with quite a few of them.
The biggest thing for me as a young player was, you're away from home, you're out of your comfort zone, you're playing in front of a crowd, probably for the first time, and you're playing in front of your peers and different teams.
"It's also the first time probably playing under a bit of pressure and stuff. So all those things sort of came flowing back when I started to dig into it," he said.
"In that development part of their life, not even in football, in their lives being away from their parents and being given that bit of freedom and stuff, and to stand on their own two feet and be with their peers.
"Just being out of your comfort zone, it's great. We mollycoddle our kids now and really shelter them from things.
"It's an experience for all the boys and girls to come and play in an environment with a growing reputation throughout the world now."

Lee urges 'ruthless' Donovan in Crocker rematch

Andy Lee has urged Paddy Donovan to be "ruthless" when he takes on Lewis Crocker for the vacant IBF welterweight world title on 13 September in Belfast. Donovan was in a commanding position when he first faced Crocker on 1 March but was disqualified at the end of the eighth round for punching after the bell, following two earlier points deductions for use of the head and elbow. Following his disqualification, Donovan's team successfully lobbied for a rematch which was granted by the IBF, but the result of the first fight stood. That first fight was a final eliminator for the title, but with Jaron 'Boots' Ennis since vacating to move up to the light-middleweight division, the title is now on the line for the rematch to be staged at Windsor Park. The opportunity to make up for his disappointment last time is a motivating factor but Lee, Donovan's head coach, does not believe his man needs to drastically change much as side from ending the argument as soon as the chance presents itself. "The tweaks are more on his (Crocker's) side," Lee told BBC Sport NI. "Does he become more aggressive or try to be more adventurous with his punch output? If he does, he's going to leave himself more open. "My advice to Paddy is to be ruthless and when you get your chance, take him out. He might have had the chance last time but was enjoying it too much, so now he has to go out there and grab his title." 'Fitting for Donovan to win world title in Belfast' It would be something of a full circle moment should Donovan emerge victorious as although a native of Limerick, Belfast has been something of a home venue. Five of his previous 15 professional contests have taken place in the city, including his debut back in 2019 - for which Lee was in his corner. Returning to Belfast for this huge night does not hold any fears for fighter and coach with Lee suggesting it would be fitting that Donovan is crowned world champion in the city. "I started out with Paddy as an amateur," he said of their journey together. "This is his sixth time fighting in Belfast and he's always had a great reception, so we feel at home here. I have a great affinity with Belfast, trained here many times and fought a couple of times myself, so it's a great boxing city. "It's beautiful that he (Donovan) started his career here and he'll win his world title here." What Alexander Isak's agent said about transfer as Anfield rumors swirl

Alexander Isak's agent recently suggested that the Newcastle United forward is close to taking "the next step" in his career, and it was rumored that one of his representatives was at Anfield on Monday. Liverpool played a double-header against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, and the Reds won 4-1 and 3-2 with two different squads. The Anfield Wrap claimed that one of Isak's agents was at Anfield, sending social media into overdrive. Isak has expressed a desire to leave Newcastle this summer, but the club rejected Liverpool's $145 million offer. Newcastle has since sent an official bid worth $105 million to RB Leipzig for striker Benjamin Sesko, which has sparked mass speculation that Isak may join Liverpool. "We are already studying and analyzing all options, and we may be close to finalizing the next step for the player," Gaitin said, via Saudi Arabian outlet Arriyadiyah. Isak helped Newcastle end a 70-year wait for silverware last season and scored in a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the League Cup Final. Despite achieving hero status, Isak expressed his desire to leave Newcastle in July. Newcastle was in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike earlier this summer, with ambitious plans to partner him with Isak. However, Liverpool hijacked the move and signed Ekitike for an initial fee worth $92 million. Despite signing Ekitike, Liverpool then switched its attention to Isak. The striker missed Newcastle's preseason tour due to a reported thigh injury, but it's believed he's pushing to join Liverpool. After making a formal offer, Liverpool has yet to submit an improved bid for Isak. However, should Leipzig accept Newcastle's offer for Sesko, then a record bid could force the club to part ways with Isak. Due to uncertainty surrounding his future, Isak has been training alone since Liverpool's opening bid. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe hasn't spoken to Isak since the offer was made, but sent him a clear message. After Newcastle's preseason tour in Asia ended, Howe condemned Isak's behavior and warned him that isolated training may continue once the squad returns to England. "You have to earn the right to train with us," Howe told the Daily Mail. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. "We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal." Howe also distanced himself from the transfer saga because he focused on Newcastle's preseason tour. "Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home," he said.
